I Preface The long and adventurous journey of learning, sampling and writing this thesis could not have happened without my enthusiastic, positive and helpful supervisors: Katrine Eldegard and Stein R. Moe. Thank you so much for the opportunity to write about my favourite insects, the beetles! I have sent you “hundreds” of drafts throughout the writing period, and I am so thankful for the comments I received. I want to thank Katrine especially, for the statistical support. Further on I want to thank both of you for letting me work during and after my thesis with field and lab work, with even more beetles! Secondly I feel that it is important to thank Jenny Benum Lorange for being my best friend and for always being so happy and positive. Without you, my field work would have been hard to follow through. I want to thank you for driving, walking, measuring, carrying, tenting, singing along with The Wombats, memories and for the lovely car you owned and that we used. Even though the car broke down on our last visit to the last site. You also helped me a lot with insect sorting at the lab and without your help I would not be finished in time. I want to thank Markus Sydenham for deploying the fly interception traps one month before sampling and Statnett for founding the project. I also want to thank Fredrik Stenersrød, my boyfriend, who carried traps with me, from the field to the storage, on our last sampling trip. Without you, I might never even have started on a bachelor in biology, and would certainly not complete this master degree in General Ecology at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). -

W niewielkim obiekcie o pow. ok. 2 ha odnotowano występowanie rzadkich owadów saproksylicznych, jak Anitys ru- bens, Elater ferrugineus, Osmoderma barnabita i Gnorimus nobilis. Przedyskutowano znaczenie obiektu dla zachowania fauny saproksylicznej. In the small park (area of ca. 2 ha) several endangered species were found, including Anitys rubens, Elater ferrugineus, Osmoderma barna- bita and Gnorimus nobilis. Significance of the area for preservation of saproxylic fauna is discussed. Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits. -

Large grazing herbivores drive the ecology of the site and can have a profound impact on invertebrates, both positive and negative. This survey was commissioned in order to assess the site’s invertebrate assemblage in a standardised and repeatable way both internally between fields and sections and temporally between years. Eight fields were selected across the estate with two in the north, two in the central block
