With the introduction of the Rolls-Royce Dart series of turboprop engines, Dutch aircraft manufacturer Fokker saw an opportunity to address the issue with an all-new high-wing design that would provide excellent comfort for passengers and a capacious load area for cargo. The aircraft would be fast and also economical to run. Thus it was that on 24 November 1955 the first prototype F27 took to the air. The second prototype soon followed, with an increase in overall length to remedy the slightly tail- heavy landing characteristic of the original design. The Friendship, as the design was later dubbed, offered an unobstructed view for its 32 passengers through large oval ports. The low-slung fuselage provided easy access both for passenger boarding and cargo loading with low door thresholds. Several versions of the aircraft were produced, including specialised military troop-ship configurations which were given the ‘M’ suffix. Some major short haul operators such as BEA chose the similar British-designed Handley Page Herald, which shared the same engines and overall characteristics as the F27. The first production Friendship, the F27-100, was delivered to Aer Lingus in 1958 and the type was operated all over the world in various formats. By the time production ended in 1987 a total of 793 airframes (including those built under licence by Fairchild) had been built. Less than 25 remain in service today. INSPIRING OLD AND NEW DUTCH ARCHITECTURE • •145 km ca 4 hours INTRODUCTION Whether it is about fashion, interior design or architecture, Dutch Architecture is striking at home and abroad. This was the case as early as the Golden Age, when the Dutch constructed the ring of canals bordered by enormous town houses. And Dutch buildings are still cited as examples at universities worldwide. How come? It’s all down to our Dutch inclination for experimentation and the trendsetting designs that stem from this, say some. Others point to our limited space and struggle against water as sources of inspiration for creative and practical designs. From the fi nest mediaeval castle in the Netherlands to houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, the Amsterdam School of architecture and modern designs from architects such as Rem Koolhaas and René van Zuuk. ‘Het nieuwe land’ (the new land), which contains cities less than 35 years old, will certainly appeal to fans of modern architecture. It is also called ‘the playground of Dutch architecture’, where designers sought the limits, then used new construction techniques and predominantly had a sizeable number of prominent designs implemented. • Space for Ambitions the Dutch Space Program in Changing European and Transatlantic Contexts D.M
Space for ambitions the Dutch space program in changing European and transatlantic contexts D.M. Baneke Abstract: Why would a small country like the Netherlands become active in space? The field was monopolized by large countries with large military establishments, especially in the early years of spaceflight. Nevertheless, the Netherlands established a space program in the late 1960s. In this paper I will analyze the backgrounds of Dutch space policy in international post- war politics, national industrial policy, and science. After the Second World War, European space activities were shaped by the interplay between transatlantic and European cooperation and competition, limited by American Cold War diplomacy. At the national level the Dutch space program was shaped firstly by two powerful companies, Philips electronics and Fokker Aircraft. As I will demonstrate, these two firms sought to gain crucial management skills as well as technological ones. Meanwhile, the nation's astronomers were able to capitalize on an advantageous confluence of political, economic and scientific ambitions to forward their own agenda. They succeeded in obtaining two of the most expensive scientific instruments ever built in the Netherlands: the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS, launched 1974) and the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS, 1983). Both were joint Dutch-American missions, but the nature of the cooperation on each was very different, reflecting the changing relationship between America and Western Europe from the 1950s until the 1980s. In 1965, the Dutch astronomical community received a letter from the Ministry of Education and Sciences. The government had decided to fund the construction of a satellite; would the astronomers have any use for it? The result, launched in 1974, was the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS).
