During the early 1950s the search was on to find a suitable replacement for the venerable Douglas DC-3 to serve as a short haul passenger and cargo delivery system – a job that so far was pretty much the domain of the ‘Dak’. With the introduction of the Rolls-Royce Dart series of turboprop engines, Dutch aircraft manufacturer Fokker saw an opportunity to address the issue with an all-new high-wing design that would provide excellent comfort for passengers and a capacious load area for cargo. The aircraft would be fast and also economical to run. Thus it was that on 24 November 1955 the first prototype F27 took to the air. The second prototype soon followed, with an increase in overall length to remedy the slightly tail- heavy landing characteristic of the original design. The Friendship, as the design was later dubbed, offered an unobstructed view for its 32 passengers through large oval ports. The low-slung fuselage provided easy access both for passenger boarding and cargo loading with low door thresholds.

Several versions of the aircraft were produced, including specialised military troop-ship configurations which were given the ‘M’ suffix. Some major short haul operators such as BEA chose the similar British-designed Handley Page Herald, which shared the same engines and overall characteristics as the F27. The first production Friendship, the F27-100, was delivered to Aer Lingus in 1958 and the type was operated all over the world in various formats. By the time production ended in 1987 a total of 793 airframes (including those built under licence by Fairchild) had been built. Less than 25 remain in service today.

Accessing the aircraft

To access the aircraft in FSX: 1. Click on ‘Free Flight’ 2. Select ‘Just Flight’ from the ‘Publisher’ drop-down menu 3. Select ‘Fokker’ from the Manufacturer drop-down and choose one of the variants Tick the ‘Show all variations’ box to see all the available liveries.

To access the aircraft in Prepar3D: 1. Select Aircraft > Select Aircraft from the menu bar 2. Select the ‘Publisher’ filter mode and then select ‘Just Flight’ from the list of publishers 3. Choose one of the variants and click on ‘OK’

To uninstall this software from your system: • Go to the Windows Start menu and select ‘Control Panel` (if you are in Windows Classic view, Control Panel will be found under ‘Settings’). • Double-click on the item ‘Add or Remove Programs’ (Windows XP) or ‘Programs and Features’ (Windows Vista or 7). In Windows 8 move your mouse to the bottom left corner, right-click with your mouse, then left-click on the ‘Programs and Features’ menu that appears. In Windows 10 move your mouse to the bottom left corner and left-click on the ‘Start’ button. Left-click on the ‘Settings’ icon and on the window that appears, left-click on ‘System’ and then select ‘Apps & features’. Select the product in the list and then click on ‘Uninstall’ twice and follow the on-screen instructions. • Select the program you want to uninstall from the list provided and click the ‘Uninstall’ option. • Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the program.

Uninstalling or deleting this software in any other way may cause problems when using this program in the future or with your Windows set-up.

The most noticeable feature of the F27 is its low-slung, high-wing stance. The door thresholds are very close to the ground, enabling easy access for passenger boarding and the loading of baggage and freight.

The main differences between variants are with the forward cargo doors. The -100 and -200 series share a smaller square forward cargo door which opens vertically inside the fuselage.

Fokker F27 Friendship 12 100/200/300 The -300 series has a combination door made up of a large cargo door, which opens by swinging out and up; this incorporates a separate crew door which opens conventionally, swinging to the left.

To open the doors, use: [Shift]+[E]+[2] for the cargo door [Shift]+[E]+[3] for the passenger door (rear) [Shift]+[E]+[4] for the starboard side baggage locker door Note: On the -300 series aircraft, [Shift]+[E] will open the secondary crew door set into the large forward cargo door.

GPU (Ground Power Unit) For the GPU to appear, you need to switch the power supply switch on the overhead panel to the EXT PWR position. To connect the ground power to the aircraft you have to move the external power switch to the ON position (blue light illuminated). Please see the flight tutorial section of the manual (page 36) for information on the correct operation of the GPU.

Ground services and boarding steps To toggle the boarding steps and support vehicles, use the crew call button on the overhead panel.

Fokker F27 Friendship 14 100/200/300 To toggle the pre-flight flags and chocks, and to remove the pilots, use the switch on the glareshield marked ISOLATING SWITCH.

The large Rolls-Royce Dart engines are housed in self-contained nacelles which also house the main retractable landing gear. Once the gear is retracted, the passengers are afforded a magnificent field of view through the large oval window ports. The propellers can be fully feathered and the engines take quite a while to spool up. They are characteristically noisy, with a high-pitched scream. Large de-icing boots cover the wing leading edges into which landing lights are set. Conventional Fowler-type flaps operate in the trailing edge of the wings. There are no spoilers. Air conditioning air-scoops adorn each side of the fuselage aft section which is dominated by an enormous vertical fin and rudder.

Fuel pump sound utility

You can open this utility by using the shortcut found in Start > All Programs > Just Flight > F27 Fuel pump sound switch. Selecting ‘Standard FSX Fuel Pump sound’ leaves the default sound in operation. Selecting ‘Quiet fuel pump sound’ enables a modified fuel pump sound which is supplied with this aircraft. Enabling the quiet fuel pump sound will replace the default FSX fuel pump sound with a version that has greatly reduced volume, improving the realism when flying the aircraft from the cockpit. Please note that this modification will also affect other aircraft that use the default FSX fuel pump sound, so you may wish to disable this option before flying other aircraft. Press ‘Close’ to save your selection.

The flight deck of a Fokker Friendship is surprisingly tight on space. The bulkhead wall is directly behind the pilots’ seats and ‘cosy’ would be an accurate description of this cockpit!

The F27 is a simple aeroplane and not at all sophisticated in its equipment specification and layout. This actually makes for a pleasant flight experience and the type is generally easy and most enjoyable to fly. The cockpit depicted in this simulation is a hybrid of several different versions, including the most common shared features and those that are most convenient and useful to the simulator pilot. The cockpit can be divided into four main areas: • Overhead panel • Main panel • Centre pedestal • Cockpit sidewalls The information on the following pages will guide you through these four areas.

Eyepoint Tool

The Eyepoint Tool has been included to allow you to easily move the default viewpoint to a position that best suits you.

Simply click on ‘Reset’ to return to the default view. When you have finished with it, right-click on the tool and then click on ‘Close Window’ to close it.

Viewing the centre console

For easier viewing of the centre console controls, simply click on the pilot’s seat cushion to hide or show the pilot’s seat armrest.

The autopilot fitted to the F27 is a very simple and effective device. It is not difficult to operate but you should ensure that you are familiar with its operation and features before you go flying. To operate the autopilot, first switch ON the POWER switch (3). Let’s assume we are at 15,000 feet, travelling at 220 knots on a heading of 40 degrees, and you wish to use the autopilot to maintain your cruise. Engage the autopilot by pressing the ENGAGE button (2) or the autopilot master switch next to the Captain’s seat on the centre console to energise the autopilot. The green READY light (11) will illuminate. If the autopilot is engaged without any other autopilot modes engaged, it will maintain your current pitch and roll the wings level.

Fokker F27 Friendship 29 100/200/300 The AIRSPEED/ALTITUDE ‘height’ hold knob allows you to engage one of two modes – airspeed hold or altitude hold. When the airspeed hold mode is engaged the autopilot will adjust the pitch of the aircraft in order to maintain the airspeed at which the aircraft was flying when the mode was first engaged. When altitude hold mode is engaged the autopilot will adjust the pitch of the aircraft in order to maintain the altitude at which the aircraft was flying when the mode was first engaged. If you want to hold your altitude, turn the AIRSPEED/ALTITUDE ‘height’ hold knob (1) anti-clockwise by left-clicking on the knob. The knob tool-tip will indicate that altitude hold mode is engaged – ‘Altitude Hold: on | Speed Hold: off’. The autopilot will adjust the aircraft’s pitch to maintain 15,000 feet until you disengage altitude hold mode by left- clicking on the knob. If you wish to hold your current airspeed, turn the knob clockwise by right-clicking on the knob. The knob tool-tip will indicate that the airspeed hold mode is engaged –‘Altitude Hold: off | Speed Hold: on’. The autopilot will continually adjust the aircraft’s pitch to maintain your airspeed (220 knots in this case) until you disable the airspeed hold by right-clicking on the knob. NOTE: Airspeed hold mode does not function like an autothrottle. With airspeed hold mode engaged you can still adjust the throttles manually. This in turn will cause the autopilot to adjust the aircraft’s pitch further in order to maintain the selected airspeed. The autopilot is controlling the airspeed by adjusting pitch only, and not power. To engage heading hold mode, select the HDG mode using the A/P BEAM MODE SELECT switch (9) and then switch ON heading hold by clicking on the BEAM switch (5). The BEAM switch tool-tip will indicate that heading hold is engaged – ‘Beam hold mode: Heading (on)’. You can now alter your heading using the HDG knob on the HSI. You can also use the heading adjust knob to alter your heading. Disengage heading hold by clicking on the beam switch again and then click on the ALTER HEADING power control button (7) which unlocks the heading adjust knob (8). You can now left-click the heading adjust knob to bank the aircraft to the left, or right-click to bank the aircraft to the right. In both cases the knob will return to its detent position when you let go. Once you have reached your desired heading, release the heading adjust knob and then switch the BEAM switch back on to regain heading hold and the autopilot will maintain the new heading. Switching the A/P BEAM MODE SELECT switch (9) to NAV will cancel heading hold. When you next push the beam switch you will set the autopilot to NAV hold mode and it will follow the track to a selected VOR or ILS navigation approach. IMPORTANT! Please remember that switching the beam mode select switch (9) between modes will CANCEL the respective mode and you need to push the beam switch ON to re-establish hold. With all other vertical autopilot modes (AIRSPEED, ALTITUDE and GLIDE) disengaged, you can use the pitch adjuster knob (6) on the autopilot panel to control the aircraft’s pitch. Left-click on the pitch adjuster to pitch the nose down and right-click on it to pitch the nose up. The pitch adjuster tool-tip shows the pitch that the autopilot is currently selected to hold (a negative value represents a nose-down pitch). The autopilot GLIDE switch (4) allows for autopilot-assisted ILS approaches if you have tuned a valid ILS frequency into the NAV 1 receiver. It will adjust pitch and bank in order to maintain on both the glideslope and the localiser. Ensure that you turn altitude hold OFF before you engage the GLIDE function, and remember to adjust the throttles to maintain your desired airspeed! The three centre switches marked R, E and A are non-functional in this simulation.

Cockpit

This F27 cockpit is designed to give a good impression of what a real-world F27 flight deck looked and felt like. It is not intended to replicate any one particular version or any actual aircraft in service. This is because, as is the case with most hard-working aircraft, many changes were made in the field by various operators and different specifications were ordered by different airlines.

Fuel datum trim ‘fuel trimmers’

This system is designed to deliver more or less fuel to each engine, depending on the aircraft’s elevation and the ambient air temperature, thereby maintaining performance and economy and keeping the engines within their gas temperature limitations. There is a manual computer in the right eyebrow overhead panel to be operated and its relevant readings are taken to determine the fuel datum setting. Adjusting the roof computer has no effect on the trimmers! You use it to calculate the settings for them. You can set the correct fuel datum figure using the fuel trim switches located on the top near the rear of the centre console.

The water/methanol system (not operational in this simulation) allows for maximum engine power to be used in hot and high conditions without exceeding the turbine gas temperature (TGT) limits, and is therefore not used in normal operating conditions.

HPC levers

The HPC (High Pressure Cock) levers are mounted on the throttle pedestal and are multi- function devices. They have four main positional settings: • FEATHER • HPC SHUT (fuel cut) • OPEN (fuel open) • LOCK OUT

The middle two positions control the main pressure fuel cocks and are used when starting and stopping the engines. The bottom most FEATHER position cuts the engine completely and allows for propeller feathering with the feather switches on the glareshield panel. Pushing the HPC lever forward to the stop enters the LOCK OUT phase for the propeller gearboxes. The LOCK OUT position is used for departure (take-off) but both HPC levers should be moved aft to just FORWARD of the position marked OPEN during the initial climb-out from your departure airport and must not be moved forward to LOCK OUT until you are on final approach to your destination.

Propeller feathering has been simulated as closely as possible to the real thing. To feather and secure the engine: The HP lever must be placed into the FEATHER position. Press the FEATHER button on the instrument eyebrow area to feather the propeller. Turn OFF the appropriate engine ignitor. Note: If you have a propeller feathered and push the HP Cock lever forward the propeller will automatically un-feather.

De-icing controls

We have made all the de-icing controls, timers, buttons and lights functional in this cockpit. It will give you something to play with on long trips!

Fokker F27 Friendship 33 100/200/300 Emergency flap switch

In emergency situations, such as a go-around or a missed approach, you can retract the flaps without using the flap lever by using the red emergency flap switch. This will retract the flaps from any position in one movement.

Fire system test

Use the fire bell test switches (on the glareshield panel) to test the fire alert system. Pushing them up will trigger the warning bells and red warning lights. They are self- cancelling.

Each pilot has a Clearview window which opens – use the light blue knob to open each window.

GPS (Global Positioning System)

Although not an authentic feature of the real aircraft, the default Flight Simulator GPS is available in a pop-up window. To show/hide the GPS, press [Shift]+[2] or use the Views>Instrument panels>GPS menus.

In this tutorial flight we will be departing from Norwich International Airport (EGSH) in Norfolk, located 100 miles north-east of London. We will be heading east, leaving the coast of the UK over Great Yarmouth, before approaching Rotterdam from the west. We will then turn north towards Schiphol. Covering a distance of approximately 150 nautical miles, this route is the ideal length for learning about the essential systems on board the F27.

Here are the details for our flight:

To load up the Fokker 27 tutorial flight, follow these steps: 1. Start Flight Simulator X, FSX: Steam Edition or Prepar3D 2. If you are using FSX, select the Free Flight menu 3. Choose Load

Note: There are three tutorial flights included. They are all exactly the same flight but allow for correct aircraft positioning at Norwich Airport for certain add-on sceneries if you have them installed. They are called: Fokker F27 tutorial flight – Default scenery Fokker F27 tutorial flight – ORBX FTX England scenery Fokker F27 tutorial flight – UK2000 VFR Airfields scenery

4. Select the Fokker 27 tutorial flight that relates to your installed scenery from the list of saved flights 5. Click on Fly Now! (Flight Simulator X) or OK (Prepar3D)

You should now find yourself sitting in the cockpit of an Air UK Fokker F27-200 at Norwich International Airport. The cockpit is currently in a ‘cold and dark’ state, i.e. all the cockpit systems are switched off, as you would find the aircraft prior to the first flight of the day. This means we will need to spend some additional time setting up the cockpit, but doing so will allow you to learn a considerable amount about the features and functions on board this classic aircraft.

This tutorial will cover the necessary steps for you to get from point A to point B, but it will not explore each system in depth.

Fokker F27 Friendship 37 100/200/300 Getting started

First we need to secure the aircraft. Enter the cockpit and click on the ISOLATING SWITCH in the top centre of the instrument panel (on the left of the two blue FLIGHT FINE UNLOCKED lights) to place the wheel chocks and pitot covers. Look outside to ensure they are in place.

Next we need to get the aircraft ready for passenger boarding and baggage loading. To get a clearer view you may wish to click on the footrest area at the bottom of the instrument panel to hide the control yoke. Click again to make the yoke reappear. Check that the parking brake is engaged and verify positive brake pressure.

Check that the number 1 and number 2 engine ignitor switches are both set forward to OFF. These switches are situated either side of the HP Cock levers on the forward centre pedestal.

Press the CREW CALL button located on the overhead panel to enable the ground equipment.

Now you can open the passenger and baggage doors by pressing the [Shift]+[E]+[2], [Shift]+[E]+[3] and [Shift]+[E]+[4] keys on your keyboard. The cabin crew and ground handlers can now begin their preparations for passenger boarding and the loading of baggage while we continue setting up the aircraft ready for the flight ahead.

Fokker F27 Friendship 38 100/200/300 We can now apply external power to the aircraft. Right-click on the power supply switch to move it to the EXT PWR (forward) position and left-click on the external power switch to move it to the ON position. A blue light will illuminate to indicate that external power is connected. Switching to the external (Spot) view you should see the air-stairs, baggage cart and GPU in place.

Switch ON the inverters and generators to connect the external electrical power to the aircraft systems.

Check that both AC power needles are indicating 28 volts.

Fokker F27 Friendship 39 100/200/300 We can now check that the engine start system is receiving power. Check that the master start switch is in the SAFE (middle) position and then momentarily place the No. 2 (right) engine start switch in the ON (up) position. The amber START light should illuminate. Then put the switch back to OFF.

To finalise the configuration of the electrical system, place both alternator switches in the ON position.

Switch ON the navigation lights and the Seatbelts and No Smoking cabin signs. These switches are located at the forward lower section on the overhead panel.

For taxiing we need to switch ON the nose- wheel steering system with the switch located left of the Captain’s knee.

Fokker F27 Friendship 40 100/200/300 Ensure that the TANK SELECT rotary knob on the overhead fuel panel is set to BOTH so that the BOTH indicator is displaying ON.

Move all four left and right tank boost pump switches to the ON position. The four red lights will go out.

To the left of the fuel boost pump switches are two switches for controlling the water/methanol system. Momentarily place both of these switches in the ON position to test the system. The green light above each switch should illuminate. Move both switches back to OFF.

Further up the overhead panel are two switches for controlling the fuel filter heaters. As temperatures are moderate today, these switches can be left in the OFF position.

Fokker F27 Friendship 41 100/200/300 On the opposite side of the overhead panel, move the pitot heater switches to ON.

Moving down to the centre pedestal, both HPC levers should be placed in the HPC SHUT position. Use the tool-tips to confirm that they are in the correct position.

Verify that the gear is down and locked (three greens) and that you have sufficient fuel for the flight.

Fokker F27 Friendship 42 100/200/300 On the pedestal located to the left side of the pilot’s seat, check the oxygen quantity and then place the supply switch in the ON position. The oxygen flow indicator should ‘blink’ to indicate flow.

Move the supply switch back to the OFF position and ensure that the mode selector is set to NORMAL. Finally, confirm that both oil pressure warning lights are ON (illuminated), the emergency flap switch on the left side of the centre console is set to OFF (red safety cover shut), and the autopilot master lever is set to OFF (up).

Fokker F27 Friendship 43 100/200/300 Configuring the avionics

We now need to configure the avionics for our departure.

For the initial climb we are going to maintain an easterly course, so right-click on the HSI heading knob to rotate the heading bug to 090 degrees.

Once we are settled into our climb to the east we will make a right turn to fly towards the first waypoint on the route, North Denes (ND) NDB. In preparation, tune the ND NDB frequency (417.0) into the ADF 1 receiver on the overhead panel.

Move the VOR1/ADF1 switch (located just above the altimeter) to the ADF1 (down) position. The direction to the NDB will now be indicated by the needles on the HSI and RMI when it is within range of the aircraft.

Fokker F27 Friendship 44 100/200/300 Tune the Rotterdam VOR (110.40) into the NAV 1 receiver using the rotary knobs in the middle of the receiver and then switch it to the active slot by clicking on the ACTIVE button on the lower left of the receiver.

Finally, place the FD mode selector knob in the HDG position. The flight director will then provide lateral guidance for maintaining our desired heading for the initial climb.

Starting the engines

We are now ready to start the engines, but first we need to close the doors and remove the air-stairs and the baggage cart. Press [Shift]+[E]+[2], [Shift]+[E]+[3] and [Shift]+[E]+[4] to close the passenger and baggage doors and then click on the CREW CALL button to remove the air-stairs and baggage cart from the aircraft. Finally, click on the ISOLATING SWITCH to remove the chocks and flags.

The green door warning light will extinguish when the doors are closed.

Before starting the engines we need to switch ON the anti- collision and beacon lights. The switches for these can be found on the overhead forward panel. (Note that turning on the anti-collision lights automatically turns on the beacons.)

Fokker F27 Friendship 45 100/200/300 We need to set the fuel trimmers to their correct position for engine starting. Locate the fuel trimmers at the rear of the centre console and set them both to 10 by right-clicking on them. The normal fuel trimmer settings for engine start are: • If ambient temperature is AT or BELOW 15°C – 10 (100%) • If ambient temperature is AT or ABOVE 15°C – 5 (50%) Note: Due to a limitation of Flight Simulator, the fuel trimmers will automatically move to 100% (10) during engine start regardless of any setting you have made. This is not real- world authentic but cannot be avoided. If, for example, you set the trimmers to 5/50%, they will automatically move to 10/100% when you start the engines, but you will set them to the correct setting for departure later in the tutorial.

We will start the No. 2 (right) engine first. Move the right engine selector to ON (up). The START light will illuminate.

On the centre pedestal move the right engine ignition switch to ON.

Fokker F27 Friendship 46 100/200/300 On the overhead console move the master start switch to the ARM (down) position.

Make sure that the No. 2 HPC lever is in the HPC SHUT position and then move the master start switch to the START (up) position.

The right engine will begin to spool up, indicated by an increase in RPM and TGT. When the engine reaches 1,000 RPM, push the No. 2 HPC lever forward just past the HPC OPEN position. Check that the mouse-over tool- tip for the HPC levers says ‘H.P. Cock OPEN’.

Fokker F27 Friendship 47 100/200/300 Once the RPM has stabilised, move the master start switch back to the ARM (down) position, move the right engine selector to OFF (aft), and switch the right engine ignitor switch to OFF (aft). Finally, push the No.2 HPC lever forward into the LOCK OUT position. The blue FLIGHT FINE UNLOCKED light should illuminate.

Now start the No. 1 (left) engine using the same procedure. Once both engines are stable, the master start switch can be moved back to the SAFE position.

Fokker F27 Friendship 48 100/200/300 We now need to use the roof-mounted fuel datum computer to calculate the fuel trim settings for our departure. Press the [A] key repeatedly until you see the fuel datum computer in the top right roof area. Rotate the fuel datum computer (left-click and hold) until our altitude (100ft) lines up with the prevailing air temperature (15°C) on the upper scale. Note that the computer will not rotate any further in this direction as any temperature/ altitude below this will always require a fuel trim setting of 10 (100%). The lower scale now shows us what the fuel trim should be set to, which is 10 (100%); coincidentally we have set this already during the engine starting. Note: The indications on the trimmers are x10 so, for example, ‘1’ = 10 and ‘5’ = 50.

Now that the engines are running we no longer need external power. Move the SET POWER switch to the BATT position by RIGHT-clicking on it ONCE. The aircraft is now running on internal power and the EXT PWR switch is automatically moved to the OFF position, removing the GPU and extinguishing the blue EXT POWER light.

Switch to the external view to check that all ground equipment has now been removed.

Taxi

We can now begin pushing back from the gate. Disengage the parking brake and then press [Shift]+[P]+[1] to start the pushback and turn the tail left so that you end up wih the nose heading in the correct direction for the taxi. Press [Shift]+[P] to stop the pushback when the aircraft has pushed back a sufficient distance and is at 90 degrees to your parking position, to allow the aircraft to make a turn onto the taxiway. When the aircraft comes to a stop, engage the parking brake.

Fokker F27 Friendship 49 100/200/300 Move the taxi light switch to the ON position and then extend the flaps to 16.5 degrees.

We can now taxi to the runway. Release the parking brake and then taxi to the threshold of runway 09 using this route:

Only small amounts of power are required to maintain a safe taxiing speed. The FLIGHT FINE UNLOCKED lights should remain illuminated during taxiing but the PROP BELOW LOCK lights will extinguish with a sufficient application of power.

Fokker F27 Friendship 50 100/200/300 Stop at the holding point just short of runway 09. Switch OFF the taxi light and switch ON the landing lights and the strobe lights. Have a look left and right, verify that nothing is on approach and the runway is clear, and if this is the case then taxi onto the runway.

Take-off

Line up with the runway centre line and then come to a stop. Bring the throttle levers forward to around 25%, check that the engines are stable using the engine instrument gauges and then advance the throttles to apply full power.

As the aircraft starts to gather speed, keep it running down the centre line with small rudder inputs. As you approach 100 knots start to raise the nose of the aircraft. Slowly bring the nose up to approximately 10 degrees as you lift off the runway. The aircraft will begin to climb away from the runway and you should be well clear of the ground by the time you reach 130 knots. Raise the undercarriage using the [G] key and adjust the elevator trim as required to maintain a 15-degree pitch, manually holding a heading of 090 degrees and retracting the flaps as your speed increases.

Fokker F27 Friendship 51 100/200/300 Climb

Once stable in the climb, reduce power to maintain 16,000 RPM (about 75%) on each engine. Alter your pitch to increase the climb speed to 180 knots and maintain your easterly heading. Move both orange HPC levers aft to just FORWARD of the position marked OPEN (check the mouse-over tip says “H.P. Cock Open”) during this initial climb-out. Warning! Move them too far aft and you will stop the engines. They must not be moved forward to the LOCK OUT position until you are on the final approach to your destination. Upon reaching 3,000 feet, turn the autopilot POWER switch to ON and then engage the autopilot using either the blue ENGAGE switch in the top middle area on the autopilot panel or via the autopilot master switch on the left side of the centre pedestal.

Fokker F27 Friendship 52 100/200/300 The autopilot will hold your current pitch and maintain wings level. We now need to make a turn towards the North Denes (ND) NDB. Unlock the heading adjust knob by left-clicking on the ALTER HEADING button in the middle of the autopilot panel to set it to ON. Now right-click and hold on the heading adjust knob to begin a right turn to establish a new heading towards the North Denes (ND) NDB. Use the needle on the RMI to judge what heading is required to reach the NDB. Note: The autopilot is not maintaining our altitude, so make sure to use the pitch adjuster to adjust the pitch as required to continue the climb at 180 knots. The longer you click and hold on the heading adjust knob, the more the aircraft will bank and turn (up to a maximum limit of 25 degrees). When you release the mouse the knob will re-centre and the aircraft will roll out on the new heading.

When you are on the correct heading, release the right mouse button to level the wings and left-click on ALTER HEADING to lock the heading adjust knob. Make sure that the A/P BEAM MODE SELECT switch is set to HDG and then left-click on the BEAM switch to engage the autopilot heading hold. Use the heading bug on the HSI to make any further adjustments to continue tracking towards the NDB. Switch OFF your landing lights as you pass through 10,000 feet. As you approach the North Denes (ND) NDB that is situated just inland of the coast, you are going to make a turn towards Rotterdam. Before engine start-up you tuned in the Rotterdam VOR (110.40) on the NAV 1 receiver.

Fokker F27 Friendship 53 100/200/300 Now rotate the course (CRS) knob on the HSI until the deviation needle is centred with the arrow head end pointing up. Then switch the A/P BEAM MODE SELECT switch to NAV and reselect the BEAM hold knob to ON.

The autopilot will command a right turn to begin tracking inbound to the VOR.

Fokker F27 Friendship 54 100/200/300 Cruise

We should reach our cruising altitude with approximately 90 miles to run until Rotterdam VOR. You can see the DME distance read-out on the top left of the HSI.

As you begin to approach our cruise altitude of 20,000 feet, use the pitch selector knob to gradually reduce the rate of climb. On reaching 20,000 feet, engage altitude hold on the autopilot by left-clicking on the AIRSPEED – HEIGHT knob at the top left of the autopilot panel.

Allow the aircraft to accelerate before reducing power to maintain 220 knots. Continue to adjust the engine RPM to reach and maintain a cruising speed of 220 knots. Whilst things are relatively quiet in the cockpit, we can spend a couple of minutes setting up the navaids for our approach into Amsterdam. It’s better to do this now rather than when we are busy on the actual approach! Tune the ILS frequency for Amsterdam ILS runway 06 (110.55) into the NAV1 receiver standby slot but do not set it to the active frequency yet. Now tune Schiphol (CH) NDB (388.5) into the ADF1 receiver as that will be the next waypoint after the Amsterdam VOR.

Fokker F27 Friendship 55 100/200/300 Descent

We will begin our descent when the distance to the Rotterdam VOR reaches 40 miles, leaving us with 55 miles to run until we intercept the ILS. When the DME read-out on the HSI reads 40 miles, disengage altitude hold mode by left-clicking on the AIRSPEED – HEIGHT knob and use the pitch selector knob to begin a descent at -1,500ft/min. This can be achieved by using the left mouse button to set the pitch to approximately -4 degrees. As the aircraft begins to descend, reduce power to ensure your airspeed is kept at 220 knots. As you approach the Rotterdam VOR (look at the DME distance), move the HDG bug on the HSI so that it is pointing towards the Schiphol (CH) NDB, as indicated by the needle on the RMI. Now move the A/P BEAM MODE SELECT switch from NAV to HDG and reselect the BEAM switch to ON. Make adjustments to the heading bug as required in order to continue tracking towards the NDB. IMPORTANT! Please remember that switching the BEAM MODE SELECT switch between modes will cancel the respective mode and you need to push the Beam switch ON to re-establish hold. Passing through 10,000 feet, switch ON the landing lights and reduce speed to 200 knots whilst maintaining a -1,500ft/min descent. Check what the airfield temperature is with Amsterdam ATIS (122.20) and note it down as you will need it for adjusting the fuel trims on approach!

Approach and landing

Once the aircraft is on a steady heading towards the NDB, set the NAV 1 standby frequency (110.55) to be the ACTIVE frequency by pressing the ACTIVE knob and then select the runway course (059) using the CRS knob on the HSI. Rotate the FD MODE SELECT knob to select the AUX/NAV position. The flight director will now provide lateral guidance that will assist you in intercepting the ILS.

Fokker F27 Friendship 56 100/200/300 As you descend through 6,000 feet, deploy 11.5 degrees of flap and reduce speed to 160 knots. As the aircraft approaches the NDB you should be able to see Amsterdam Schiphol airport in the two o’clock position. Level out the aircraft as you reach 2,500 feet and increase power to maintain 150 knots. As soon as the localiser deviation pointer on the HSI begins to move towards the central dot, left-click on the autopilot GLIDE (Approach HOLD) switch to set it to ON. This will allow for an autopilot-assisted approach on both the localiser and glideslope, allowing the autopilot to line you up correctly with the runway. IMPORTANT! Ensure that autopilot altitude hold is OFF before you engage the GLIDE function!

When the glideslope deviation pointer reaches the central dot, indicating that you are established on the glideslope, the autopilot should automatically start your descent on the glideslope. Adjust power to maintain your approach speed. Move your view to the roof-mounted fuel datum computer, dial in the temperature that you previously noted from Amsterdam ATIS and, if necessary, adjust the fuel trimmers bearing in mind that the airport is 11 feet below mean sea level.

Fokker F27 Friendship 57 100/200/300 Extend the landing gear and begin deploying the flaps in stages to slow the aircraft until you reach 110 knots with full flap. Aim to be passing over the runway threshold at 95 knots. As you pass over the runway threshold, press the [Z] key to disengage the autopilot and, as the aircraft arrives over the runway, start to bring the aircraft into a flare, gently raising the nose just above the horizon. Reduce the throttles to idle and the aircraft should touch down smoothly at 90 knots.

As soon as you touch down, press the [F2] key on your keyboard to apply Ground Fine position to the propellers and apply wheel braking. Ground Fine turns the propellers flat onto the oncoming airflow and acts as a braking force to shorten the landing roll. Once the aircraft has slowed to 15 knots, turn onto the first available taxiway to the left. When you are safely off the runway, raise the flaps, switch OFF the strobe and landing lights, switch ON the taxi lights and bring the HPC levers back to the OPEN position.

Shutdown

Begin your taxi to the nearest available gate or parking spot. Once you have come to a stop at your chosen gate or parking spot, engage the parking brake and switch OFF the taxi lights. Bring both the HPC levers back to the SHUT position to shut down the engines.

Fokker F27 Friendship 58 100/200/300 Set both engine ignitors to OFF. On the overhead panel, switch OFF the booster pump switches and external lights. Release the passengers from their seats by setting the FASTEN SEATBELTS switch to OFF.

Turn OFF the autopilot power. Switch pitot heat to OFF. Switch the alternators to OFF. Switch the invertors to OFF. Switch the generators to OFF. Activate the air-stairs and baggage cart with the CREW CALL button and open the aircraft doors. Finally, left-click on the power supply switch to move it to the EXT PWR (forward) position and then turn ON the External Power switch so that the blue light illuminates. Congratulations – you have completed the Fokker 27 tutorial flight!

At Just Flight we invest a significant amount of time, effort and money in developing, manufacturing and publishing all of our flight simulation products. This includes rewarding the programmers and artists whose creativity contributes so much to the products we all enjoy. A pirate, otherwise known as a thief, makes a profit from the sale of other people’s hard work. In some cases he makes more profit than the publishers and developers make from the sale of an original title. Piracy is not just the domain of the casual domestic user but is also a multi-million-pound business conducted by criminals, often with associations with the illegal drugs trade. Buying or downloading pirated copies of programs directly supports these illegal operations. Don’t be fooled by a load of old tosh about file ‘sharing’. The sites that host these ‘shared’ files are major operations that cover their backsides with the excuse that they are simply a ‘gateway’ to the files. In fact, they actively encourage piracy and are often funded by advertising. Most of them are illegal money-laundering operations by another name. The people who really suffer from game piracy are the artists, programmers and other committed game development staff. Piracy and theft directly affects people and their families. Loss of revenue to the games industry through piracy means many are losing their jobs due to cut-backs that have to be made to ensure developers and publishers survive. The logical outcome of this is that eventually the supply of flight simulation programs will dry up because developers think it is not worth the hassle. It’s not just copying software that is against the law. Owning copied software also constitutes a criminal offence, so anyone buying or downloading from these people is also at risk of arrest and prosecution.
