4 5 Aerosoft GmbH 2013 Foreword Thank you for purchasing Airport Amsterdam for X-Plane. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the main airports of Europe. The airport is located in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer and is located approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Amsterdam. It is home to the following Dutch airlines: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Martinair, Transavia and ArkeFly. Furthermore, it is also the European hub of Delta Air Lines, and, as of April 2011, the third hub of Vueling. The airport is located a few meters below sea level and has six runways. We have devoted considerable amount of effort to create such an attractive piece of scenery for X-Plane as add-on. Be it for you to use it as a departure or destination, or just to fly or to drive around with a car. The buildings are highly detailed and almost each have unique textures. Even at night when thousands of lights are turned on many windows are lit and company names are readable. The runway is modeled with the utmost precision and represents the layout in 2012. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol will offer you hours of fun in discovering this beautiful airport. We wish you lots of fun with this purchase.

A brief history Land Reclamation - Inpoldering The draining of the lake Haarlemmermeer began in 1848 and has finished in 1852. In the northeast corner of the new polder a fort has been built to defend the new polder, which was named Fort Schiphol. The fort is located within the ring of forts that formed the Defence Line of Amsterdam.

4 5 Airport Amsterdam

In 1916 the Minister of Defence approved purchase of land near Fort Schiphol to establish a military airport. In August of that year the site of 16.5 hectares (0.165 square kilometers) was made suitable to serve as an airfield and there were four wooden hangars build. On Septem- ber 19 three planes of the LVA (NL: Luchtvaartafdeeling, EN: Army Aviation Group) landed at Schiphol. The field soon proved too small and during the World War I adjacent land was acquired. At the end of the World War I the area of Schiphol has increased to 76 hectares (0.76 square kilometer).

The original plan presented by Jan Dellaert shows a tangential Schiphol with a central terminal building. When the World War I had ended they quickly switched to transport of mail, freight and passengers using old war planes. Mr. Albert Plesman founded the Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij voor Nederland en Koloniën N.V. (later: KLM) on October 1919. On May 17, 1920 KLM opened its first scheduled service from Amsterdam to London.

6 7 Aerosoft GmbH 2013 In 1921 the accommodation for passengers at Schiphol was improved further. The number of scheduled flights increased and larger and heavier aircraft appeared. While Schiphol lost its significance as a military airport, for civil aviation the airport became increasingly important. On April 1, 1926 Schiphol was bought by the municipality of Amsterdam. The terminal building was opened in 1928; in time for the Olympics that year in Amsterdam. And in May 1940 the terminal was destroyed by an air raid. A replica of the terminal is now located at the aviation museum in . In 1935 the airport was enlarged to three times the existing area. A night landing system was installed and four asphalt concrete runways were built. During May 1940 Schiphol was bombed by the Germans. German troops occupied the airport runways and extended the runways. Schiphol was bombed several times by the Allies throughout the World War II. After World War II the flight activity at the airport increased so rapidly that it soon became clear that Schiphol was facing a lack of space. Mr. Jan Dellaert presented his plan for a tangentially Schiphol with a centrally located terminal building. In 1949 the Dutch government decided that Schiphol would remain the main Dutch airport. In that same year, the tangential system was approved by the municipality of Amsterdam. In 1961 the new design of the airport was presented to the Board of Schiphol. In 1963 the construction of the terminal building commenced. The new terminal buildings opened in April 1967. These lay to the west of the old airport. The station building was later amed Schiphol- Centrum, and is the centre of the airport. Around 1977 growth at Schiphol-Centrum was very visible. To the South of the terminal the first offices and cargo buildings were built. The terminal size was already doubled in 1975. In 1970 the A-Pier was fitted with a new head to connect to Jumbo Jets. D-Pier entered service.

6 7 Airport Amsterdam

During the next 20 years Schiphol grew further. The former Schiphol area, now named Schiphol-East, became the cargo area. The D-Pier was extended and was given an additional floor. Around 1990 a new plan was drawn up for Schiphol. In the 90‘s this has resulted to a doubling of the terminal area with the construction of Terminal 3. Underneath Schiphol-Centrum a railway station was constructed. Offices and hotels were built at the Schiphol-Centrum area.

The old control tower in operation until 1992. A new control tower was necessary because the air traffic controllers could not see the taxiing aircraft due to the new buildings and terminals. In 1991 the new tower was ready. With a height of 101 meter it was at that time the highest one in the world. The base of the tower is 5 meter below sea level. In 2005 the H-Pier opened for low cost airlines. To keep costs down this pier has no shops and just a few restaurants or toilets.

As with any airport Schiphol has its own fire brigade. The brigade has three barracks. To drill as realistically as possible Schiphol has a “training aircraft” a full size replica aircraft where real fires internal and external can be started. During its existence Schiphol has won more than 120 awards. In 1980, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1990 and 2003 it was voted best airport in the world. It is awarded the ‘Best Airport in Europe’ in 16 consecutive years (1988-2003). There are also awards for ‘Best business travel airport’. Currently, Schiphol, together with two other airports, has earned four stars by Skytrax’ Airport Review.

In the summer of 1986 the Concorde visited Schiphol.

The KLM is one of the most famous airline companies in the world. KLM was founded on 7 October 1919 making it the oldest carrier in the world still opera- ting under its original name. KLM’s main hub is Schiphol.

10 11 Aerosoft GmbH 2013 A of KLM takes off of the G pier on runway 06 - 24 to a distant destination. The future In the next few years Schiphol would like to expand its capacity to to 65 million passengers and between 600,000 and 650,000 flights per year. To be able to compete with Frankfurt and London Heathrow a seventh runway would be necessary. To achieve this goal there is a need for a new terminal on the northwest side of Schiphol-Centrum. However, this plan has been cancelled in 2009. Instead in 2010 the execution has started of a new Master Plan 2020-2025.This plan includes expansion of the piers south of the existing B-Pier, and the construction of a new departure/arrival terminal in this area. Schiphol will continue to focus on the hub function for KLM and the SkyTeam airlines, but also will continue to grow in the low-cost airline segment. In terms of cargo, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the third largest airport in Europe and number 17 in the world. In 2011 1.5 million tons of cargo were transported via Schiphol. Freight is handled at Schiphol-Southeast. In the following years, this area weill be developed with an extension of first line and second line cargo buildings. Additional offices will also be constructed to support the increased cargo handling. 10 11 Airport Amsterdam

On a warm summer evening in 2011 two Boeing 737 of KLM take off from runway 18R - 36L. During these months the air traffic is the busiest time of the year due to the extra holiday flights. The Scenery The scenery “Airport Amsterdam” is suitable for X-Plane 10.04 and above. The airport has many ramp starts. The positions of these ramps are indicated on the map below. Airport Amsterdam for X-Plane has been designed with the future in mind.

12 13 Aerosoft GmbH 2013 It contains a large amount of models and designs that will create a realistic even life like representation of the real airport. It will run well on most computer systems, and even better on faster computers. The simulator has rendering options to adjust visual features so each pilot can decide which setting provides the optimum smoothness and visual cues for the simulation. This scenery has enough features to keep future computers busy creating a beautiful and realistic environ- ment for Schiphol in X-Plane. Some hangar doors can be opened by using flaps down and flaps up to close. Please refer to the map for an overview.

The scenery objects Most objects are modeled as faithfully as possible with the information that I had. Some details were unfortunately left out because otherwise the scenery could not be used on most computer systems. Some special objects and locations of interest are described further below.

How do I modify the appearance of the airport? At Airport Amsterdam you have the possibility to choose from three different versions (no static aircraft, custom runways and default X-Plane runways). How do I switch from one version to another? Go to your X-Plane directory under Custom Scenery\Airport Amster- dam\. That’s where you should find the three zip-archives. Extract them as you wish to the folder Custom Scenery\Airport Amsterdam\ and overwrite the existing files… that’s it.

Fokker F-100 On the roof of Schiphol is a aircraft of KLM, where visitors can take a look. Inside one can experience the history of Fokker, and take a look into the cockpit or baggage compartment. Especially for children there are flight trivia and riddles to solve.

14 15 Aerosoft GmbH 2013 The Fokker 100 model is placed on concrete pedestals.

The Main Tower The main control tower at Schiphol has two parts. At the top Dutch air traffic control (LVNL) manages air traffic at and around Schiphol. In the second tear several teams that watch over the safety of all other apron traffic such as traffic (freight) cars and other special vehicles and pedestrians are at home. The operational area of the main tower (named: Tower Centrum) is located some 90 meters above the ground. The model is designed with the highest precision.

Model of the Main Tower is equipped with lighting, LIT textures and bump maps to create a realistic model.

Hangar 14 When you enter Hangar 14, you are immediately impressed by the size of this building. There are three ‘bays’ in the hangar. Each bay is used for maintenance of the aircraft. Both KLM aircraft as well as aircraft from other companies are being serviced in these bays to get their check-up which is required after a specific amount of “flight hours”. Maintenance activity goes on 24 hours a day, both in daytime and nighttime. KLM is known for its excellent expertise regarding mainte- nance of aircrafts. The quality and speed of these check-ups is of a high level.

16 17 Aerosoft GmbH 2013 The model of Hangar 14 contains its structural steel construction and platforms for the mechanics.

16 17 Airport Amsterdam

Gate D Since the completion of the airport it is the largest gate. Its original name was Gate B. It is now almost unrecognizable due to the many renovations and additions. In the meantime the gate has become twice as wide and a floor has been added. One detail has never changed however: the small ATC tower in the middle of the gate. In the early years this was used as ground traffic control. Today the meteo team uses the tower. The object of 600 by 275 meters from the scenery is grand. So many details have been made. The underpasses are also provided with lights.

18 19 Aerosoft GmbH 2013 Hangar 32 Martinair Maintenance & Engineering (M & E) is the engineering service of Martinair. Maintenance takes place in Hangar 32 at Schiphol-East. Martinair is part of the KLM group. Martinair engineering service is therefore responsible for both the Martinair fleet and regional KLM fleet.

Model of the Hangar 32. It has movable doors and the steel support structure is modeled in great detail.

Fire Training Centre This is the model of the fire training centre and many buildings of this complex are shown. The training aircraft is prominently placed. It’s a cross somewhere between a 747 and an MD11 so various types of disasters can be practiced.

An overview of the Fire & Rescue Training Centre. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Today Thee is a small country but the national airport is situated on a very large area. The surface area totals no less than 65 square kilometers. Taxiing to the most distant runway (18R-36L) takes more than 10 to 20 minutes. If you are lucky to depart from 18R-36L, you are closer to the municipality of Haarlem than Amsterdam. En route you will cross the typical Dutch landscape of polders.

20 21 Aerosoft GmbH 2013 During spring the tulip fields next to the taxiway can be seen. You also have to cross two highways and a canal before you reach that runway. The cargo area is spacious. 10 to 20 cargo 747’s of different companies on one day are no exception.

Overview of current day Schiphol with a very special visitor.

Due to the unique location of the airport and the unobstructed field of view it is excellent for taking pictures. Often there are very special light conditions in the spring and autumn. Because Schiphol is a major hub for many companies traffic is busy and varied. Especially in the summer months when there is extra holiday traffic.
