The Princess and the Platformer: The Evolving Heroine in Nintendo Adventure Games Katharine Phelps Humanities 497W December 15, 2007 Just remember that my being a woman doesn't make me any less important! --Faris Final Fantasy V 1 The Princess and the Platformer: The Evolving Heroine in Nintendo Adventure Games Female characters, even as a token love interest, have been a mainstay in adventure games ever since Nintendo became a household name. One of the oldest and most famous is the princess of the Super Mario games, whose only role is to be kidnapped and rescued again and again, ad infinitum. Such a character is hardly emblematic of feminism and female empowerment. Yet much has changed in video games since the early 1980s, when Mario was born. Have female characters, too, changed fundamentally? How much has feminism and changing ideas of women in Japan and the US impacted their portrayal in console games? To address these questions, I will discuss three popular female characters in Nintendo adventure game series. By examining the changes in portrayal of these characters through time and new incarnations, I hope to find a kind of evolution of treatment of women and their gender roles. With such a small sample of games, this study cannot be considered definitive of adventure gaming as a whole. But by selecting several long-lasting, iconic female figures, it becomes possible to show a pertinent and specific example of how some of the ideas of women in this medium have changed over time. A premise of this paper is the idea that focusing on characters that are all created within one company can show a clearer line of evolution in the portrayal of the characters, as each heroine had her starting point in the same basic place—within Nintendo.

History When Nintendo marketing was designing the Metroid Prime ad campaign, one of the ideas was to make the series appeal to more adult gamers. In one of the meetings I had a chance to sit in on, one of marketing women had an idea to market Samus Aran in a bra and panties, and she stood up, ripped her clothes off, and put her bra and panties on this Metroid Prime Standee! The execs at NOA loved the idea, but it was shot down by Nintendo of Japan as being too risque for the American gaming public.

Having played both Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus, I am now ready to embark on a game that has been so hyped up at this point that I honestly don't know what to expect. Yay! I know that other themes come from the NES installment too, and I'm excited to know which ones. Bachelor thesis in the subject of computer graphics arts. Clara Lundwall Institution for art, communication and teaching Luleå tekniska universitet, Skellefteå 2017 Bachelor thesis 15 hp Computer Graphics Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts 180 hp Preface This paper ends my three years of studies at Luleå University of Technology's computer graphics programme. Through these three years I have gained knowledge in both VFX and game graphics, although my interest in the game industry has always been stronger. I’ve always had a large interest in artistic aspect of games, the visual experience and not so much the technical process. So the direction of my thesis, writing about design rather than technique, felt quite obvious. Character design is the subject of this thesis. The subject of character design has always been interesting to me, and choosing a subject that is interesting and that I already have some basic knowledge about for this thesis felt like a good choice. For the duration of this last course I have been working as an intern at Paradox Arctic in Umeå, where I also did practical work on a character for games. Although related to the subject of character design, this is not something I will discuss in this thesis. Clara Lundwall Abstract This thesis will address the subject of character design for games.

  • A Look Into the Development and Presence of Early Video Game Music in Popular Culture
Wesleyan University The Honors College 8-Bit Heroes: A Look into the Development and Presence of Early Video Game Music in Popular Culture by Anthony Martello Class of 2010 A thesis (or essay) submitted to the faculty of Wesleyan University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts with Departmental Honors in Music Middletown, Connecticut April, 2010 2 8-Bit Heroes: A Look into the Development and Presence of Early Video Game Music in Popular Culture Introduction Video games are more popular than ever. Youth spend their days with their eyes glued to the video screen spending countless hours gaining unimaginable power and prowess in simulated worlds. Video games are often written off as just another example of simple popular culture. But as many other art forms possessed similar conceptions in their beginnings, video games may one day be considered a new serious art medium. Though there are many key aspects to the popularity of video games, most of them at base level are visual by nature. However, when it comes to relating a character or environment in a virtual world to a person in the real world, audio is a key component in empathizing with the gamer. The different sound effects in a game and the background music to each setting present the simulated world in a more defined environment that the player can relate to. For example, dark ominous music can represent impending danger, while upbeat cheery music allows the gamer to relax in safety. Not only does music give these video game worlds a sound environment, but it also creates a sense of feeling and emotion within the gamer.

The introductory chapter discusses fantasy as a constituent of domesticity, and makes a case for how fantasy can be thought of as a bridge for videogame formalism and research into the context of play. It begins by discussing the “rhetorics of play” in game studies along with videogame medium specificity, introducing the notion of empowerment fantasy in relation to a rhetoric of frivolity, and providing a historical sketch of the arcade spaces where games were played before they were a primarily domestic phenomenon.
