Historical Background Lesson 3 The Historical Influences… How They Arrived in Argentina and Where the Dances’ Popularity is Concentrated Today The Chacarera History: WHAT INFLUENCES MADE THE CHACARERA WHAT IT IS TODAY? HOW DID THESE INFLUENCES MAKE THEIR WAY INTO ARGENTINA? The Chacarera was influenced by the pantomime dances (the Gallarda, the Canario, and the Zarabanda) that were performed in the theaters of Europe (Spain and France) in the 1500s and 1600s. Later, through the Spanish colonization of the Americas, the Chacarera spread from Peru into Argentina during the 1800s (19th century). As a result, the Chacarera was also influenced by the local Indian culture (indigenous people) of the area. Today, it is enjoyed by all social classes, in both rural and urban areas. It has spread throughout the entire country except in the region of Patagonia. Popularity is concentrated in which provinces? It is especially popular in Santiago del Estero, Tucuman, Salta, Jujuy, Catamarca, La Rioja and Cordoba. These provinces are located in the Northwest, Cuyo, and Pampas regions of Argentina. There are many variations of the dance that are influenced by each of the provinces (examples: The Santiaguena, The Tucumana, The Cordobesa) *variations do not change the essence of the dance The Gato History: WHAT INFLUENCES MADE THE GATO WHAT IT IS TODAY? HOW DID THESE INFLUENCES MAKE THEIR WAY INTO ARGENTINA? The Gato was danced in many Central and South American countries including Mexico, Peru, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay, however, it gained tremendous popularity in Argentina. The Gato has a very similar historical background as the other playfully mischievous dances (very similar to the Chacarera). -

She received her B.M. degree from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, studying with Alan Woy. Her M.M. and D.M.A. degrees are from Michigan State University, where she studied with Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr. Maila Gutierrez Springfield is an instructor at Valdosta State University and a member of the Maharlika Trio, a group dedicated to commissioning and performing new works for saxophone, trombone and piano. She can be heard on saxophonist Joren Cain’s CD Voices of Dissent and on clarinetist Linda Cionitti’s CD Jag & Jersey. MusicWeb International selected Jag & Jersey as the recording of the month for February 2010 and noted that Maila “is superb in the taxing piano part with its striding bass lines and disjointed rhythms”. For Voices of Dissent, the American Record Guide describes Maila as “an excellent pianist, exhibiting solid technique and fine touch and pedal work." Twice- honored with the Excellence in Accompanying Award at Eastman School of Music, Maila has been staff accompanist for the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program, Georgia Southern University, the Buffet Crampon Summer Clarinet Academy and the Interlochen Arts Camp where she had the privilege of working with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. She has collaborated with members of major symphony orchestras, including those in Philadelphia, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Los Angeles and Jacksonville. She was awarded a Bachelor of Music degree from Syracuse University, and a Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music. Course Description: A journey through the different styles of Latin American Popular Music (LAPM), particularly those coming from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Their roots, influences and characteristics. Their social and historical context. Their uniqueness and similarities. Emphasis in the rhythmic aspect of folk music as a foundation for dance and as a resource of cultural identity. Even though there is no musical prerequisite, the course is recommended for students with any kind and/or level of musical experience. The course explores both the traditional and the comtemporary forms of LAPM Extensive listening/analysis of recorded music and in-class performing of practical music examples will be primary features of the course. Throughout the semester, several guest musicians will be performing and/or giving clinic presentations to the class. A short reaction paper will be required after each clinic. These clinics might be scheduled in a different time slot or even day than the regular class meeting, provided that is no time conflict with other courses for any of the students. Once a semester, the whole class will attend a public concert along with the professor. This field trip will replace a class session. Attendance is mandatory. In addition to that, students will be guided—and strongly encouraged—to go to public concerts and dance venues on their own. -

El encuentro colonial El interés por la música “culta” durante los casi tres siglos de la época colonial en Amé- rica Latina, si bien es de fechas recientes, experimenta en la actualidad un auge casi vertigi- noso. Un repertorio hace pocos años casi desconocido ha encontrado el interés de los músi- cos y las empresas discográficas de tal manera que, para dar un ejemplo, una pequeña joya del repertorio virreinal peruano, el himno quechua Hanac Pachap que se encuentra en el Ritual Formulario e Institución de Curas (Lima 1631) del padre Juan Pérez Bocanegra, está disponible ahora en por lo menos una docena de diferentes grabaciones en CD. Esta popula- ridad de un repertorio no muy grande hace que no sólo los musicólogos sino también los intérpretes –que en el campo de la música antigua muchas veces también son investigado- res– estén buscando incansablemente nuevas piezas y nuevos elementos para demostrar la especificidad del repertorio americano. La producción de fuentes escritas sobre la música colonial y sus características queda un poco detrás de ese auge, aunque también se pueden notar grandes avances en la investigación que permiten un mejor entendimiento del contexto social e ideológico que dieron origen a esas obras. Año tras año se descubren nuevas obras, sabemos más de las biografías de los compositores –europeos y nativos– que trabajaban en las Américas. Y poco a poco se llega a dimensionar el aporte y el rol que las poblaciones indígenas (y negras) jugaron en ese contexto de la producción musical durante la colonia. -

Andean Music, the Left, and Pan-Latin Americanism: The Early History1 Fernando Rios (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) In late 1967, future Nueva Canción (“New Song”) superstars Quilapayún debuted in Paris amid news of Che Guevara’s capture in Bolivia. The ensemble arrived in France with little fanfare. Quilapayún was not well-known at this time in Europe or even back home in Chile, but nonetheless the ensemble enjoyed a favorable reception in the French capital. Remembering their Paris debut, Quilapayún member Carrasco Pirard noted that “Latin American folklore was already well-known among French [university] students” by 1967 and that “our synthesis of kena and revolution had much success among our French friends who shared our political aspirations, wore beards, admired the Cuban Revolution and plotted against international capitalism” (Carrasco Pirard 1988: 124-125, my emphases). Six years later, General Augusto Pinochet’s bloody military coup marked the beginning of Quilapayún’s fifteen-year European exile along with that of fellow Nueva Canción exponents Inti-Illimani. With a pan-Latin Americanist repertory that prominently featured Andean genres and instruments, Quilapayún and Inti-Illimani were ever-present headliners at Leftist and anti-imperialist solidarity events worldwide throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Consequently both Chilean ensembles played an important role in the transnational diffusion of Andean folkloric music and contributed to its widespread association with Leftist politics. But, as Carrasco Pirard’s comment suggests, Andean folkloric music was popular in Europe before Pinochet’s coup exiled Quilapayún and Inti-Illimani in 1973, and by this time Andean music was already associated with the Left in the Old World. -

BASES XXXIII FESTIVAL NACIONAL DE LA CUECA Y LA TON ADA INEDITA CONTEXTO La Ilustre Municipalidad de Valparaíso, junto a la Asociación Regional de Clubes de Cueca Quinta Región, han sido los gestores del “Festival Nacional de la Cueca y la Tonada Inédita”. Desde el año 1985 a la fecha, ya han transcurrido 32 años, realizando este magno evento en nuestro escenario natural, Caleta Portales, lugar típico de nuestro querido Puerto que es ciudad patrimonio de la Humanidad y capital cultural de Chile. El Festival tiene como fin convocar a distintos compositores, interpretes nacionales del folclor Chileno, para mostrar sus distintas creaciones q ue están llenas de creatividad, buscando la preservación de nuestras raíces folclóricas, enriqueciendo así, el patrimonio folclórico nacional mediante estas nuevas composiciones musicales y que podrán exponer en este tradicional Festival. Excerpt * Temple University Press 1 La Nueva Canción and Its Significance uring the 1960s and 1970s, profound political changes were taking place in Chile and in other parts of Latin America. New political Dand social movements of students, workers, peasants, urban shanty- town dwellers, and other groups mobilized to demand rights and political inclusion along with deeper democratization and structural changes in elit- ist systems. The 1960s were marked by the Cuban Revolution and the war in Vietnam, and many young people in Chile, as in other countries, were strongly anti-imperialist and in favor of progressive social change. These popular movements coalesced to form a powerful force that was instrumen- tal in electing the democratic socialist Salvador Allende president in 1970. Allende’s goal was to preside over a peaceful, constitutional path to social- ism in Chile. He served for three turbulent years, attempting to implement a program to reduce social inequalities, until he was overthrown in the U.S.- backed military coup of 1973. Political and Social Context In Chile in the early 1960s, social divisions were severe. Some 25 percent of the population had access to sewage services, and only 10–11 percent of rural populations had supplied drinking water. In 1960, 16.4 percent of the population was illiterate.1 Tens of thousands of people had built crude, leaky shacks to live in on the outskirts of Santiago that lacked plumbing, run- ning water, and electricity.
