It is a great pleasure for IFHTSE to welcome participants to the 25th Congress. We have held many events in China in collaboration with our colleagues in CMES, in particular those in the Chinese Heat Treatment Society. All have been successful in providing a platform for the presentation and discussion of state-of-the-art knowledge in heat treatment, surface engineering.

The 25th Congress now represents an excellent opportunity to build upon past successes and take a global view of the industry and its underlying science in the second decade of the 21st Century. We are grateful to the national organisers and to the international committees for building an attractive working and social programme.

Apart from the technological and scientific specifics, we are very proud of the many contacts and collaborative actions which have resulted from these Congresses and conferences. This essential informal communication is of great benefit to knowledge transfer.
