(Photo: UWW) CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (June 1) -- As the COVID pandemic swept the globe and impacted lives and economies worldwide, United World Wrestling - led by president Nenad Lalovic and the UWW bureau - worked to create financial opportunities for small, heavily affected nations keen to continue in their Olympic journey even as financial opportunities dwindled. In addition to existing programming, Lalovic and the bureau settled on direct assistance to support athletes and coaches in their quest to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Utilizing its established Technical Assistance program, UWW supported 121 athletes and coaches from 43 nations. "We were determined to assist all our national associations and stay united through the most difficult challenges," said Lalovic. "These past 16 months have tested our resilience, but we've stayed united as a family and through the efforts delivered by the UWW Development Team, we saw great buy-in and five athletes who were able to qualify." Curby USA [email protected] Among the leading honors of the Olympic Games is being chosen to carry the Olympic torch, lead the nation’s team into the stadium during the opening ceremonies while carrying the country’s flag, or to speak the oath of the athletes. Many of the most famous athletes have received these honors. An athlete’s selection as the flag bearer for the parade of nations during the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games is a profound distinction and honor. At the opening ceremonies of the2012 London Games there were eight wrestlers who were given this honor. The opening ceremony marks the beginning of the new Olympic Games and has grown to be an eagerly anticipated event. The various rituals of the Olympic Games are best understood not as recoveries of Ancient Greek ritual but as inventions of tradition. The Olympic Oath- taking ceremony and the Olympic flag were not introduced until 1920, and the first Olympic Village in 1932. The torch relay is a case in point. It was first introduced in the 1936 Olympics—the “Nazi” Olympics, as a means of linking symbolically the project of constructing a Germanic culture rooted in proclamations of Aryan supremacy to the Hellenic culture of the ancient Greeks. The torch relay became a permanent fixture. The 1908 London Games were the first to use a procession. This was the first Olympic Games opening ceremony with a March of the athletes in which they carried the flags of their countries).

Wrestlers who finished in the top two in their respective weight categories qualified their nations for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Host nation Tunisia secured the most Olympic berths with 10 across the three styles. Algeria qualified eight weight categories, while Egypt qualified seven. Below is a brief recap from each of the three styles. Greco-Roman Tunisia tallied a quartet of Tokyo berths in Greco-Roman. They claimed the team title, finishing five points ahead of second-place Algeria, who also nabbed four Olympic berths. The four wrestlers who earned Tunisian tickets to the Olympic Games were: Souleymen NASR (TUN), Lamjed MAAFI (TUN), Haikel ACHOURI (TUN) and Amine GUENNICHI (TUN). Nasr and Maafi won titles, while Achouri and Guennichi finished second. Algeria had a solo champion and three runner-ups and also booked four tickets to Tokyo. Their four berths came at 60kg, 67kg, 87kg and 97kg. Adem BOUDJEMLINE (ALG) won gold at 97kg, while Abdelkarim Fergat (60kg), Abdelmalek MERABET (ALG) (67kg) and Bachir SID AZARA (ALG) (87kg) closed out the day with silver-medal finishes. Egypt won three golds and finished third place in the team race.
