As a result of a successful search in the previous year we were joined this year by our new Medievalist, Assistant Professor Jonathan Conant. Two other searches launched last year were successfully concluded this fall: we will therefore be joined next fall by Professor Beshara Doumani as the new Director of the Middle East Center and as member of the department; and by Associate Professor Rebecca Nedostup as our new specialist in Modern Chinese History. Yet another search, launched this year, and efficiently conducted by Hal Cook, culminated in the hire of Assistant Professor Jo Guldi, who will join us in 2013 as our new expert of Modern British History, after spending her last year at Harvard’s Society of Fel- lows. Along with the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, we were also engaged in a search for a position in the “History of Portugal and the Portuguese Empire (15th-18th centuries),” ably chaired by Jim Green; we hope very much to make an appointment in the near future.

(Photo: UWW) CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (June 1) -- As the COVID pandemic swept the globe and impacted lives and economies worldwide, United World Wrestling - led by president Nenad Lalovic and the UWW bureau - worked to create financial opportunities for small, heavily affected nations keen to continue in their Olympic journey even as financial opportunities dwindled. In addition to existing programming, Lalovic and the bureau settled on direct assistance to support athletes and coaches in their quest to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Utilizing its established Technical Assistance program, UWW supported 121 athletes and coaches from 43 nations. "We were determined to assist all our national associations and stay united through the most difficult challenges," said Lalovic. "These past 16 months have tested our resilience, but we've stayed united as a family and through the efforts delivered by the UWW Development Team, we saw great buy-in and five athletes who were able to qualify." Georgios PILIDIS (GRE) qualified during the World Olympic Qualifier in Sofia. (Photo: Kadir Caliskan) Of the recipients, five athletes successfully qualified

Along with searches in Modern China and in Early Medieval Mediterranean, we pursued a target of opportunity appointment in the Modern Middle East, and a preselect appointment in East-Central Europe. Together with Africana Studies we sought a director for the future Center on Slavery and Justice, and, finally, we cooperated with the Watson Institute in a search for a new Diplo- macy Studies appointment. Many of these initiatives are still on going. As for now, I am delighted to welcome our new outstanding medievalist, Jonathan Conant, who brings with him also expertise in early Islam and North Africa. Much of the hard work entailed in these searches was led brilliantly by Karl Jacoby, who replaced me while I was on leave in the spring semester. Before I let him conclude this report, I wish to thank Mr.

  • Wrestlers Who Have Carried Their Nation's Flag in The
WRESTLERS WHO HAVE CARRIED THEIR NATION’S FLAG IN THE OLYMPICS David G. Curby USA [email protected] Among the leading honors of the Olympic Games is being chosen to carry the Olympic torch, lead the nation’s team into the stadium during the opening ceremonies while carrying the country’s flag, or to speak the oath of the athletes. Many of the most famous athletes have received these honors. An athlete’s selection as the flag bearer for the parade of nations during the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games is a profound distinction and honor. At the opening ceremonies of the2012 London Games there were eight wrestlers who were given this honor. The opening ceremony marks the beginning of the new Olympic Games and has grown to be an eagerly anticipated event. The various rituals of the Olympic Games are best understood not as recoveries of Ancient Greek ritual but as inventions of tradition. The Olympic Oath- taking ceremony and the Olympic flag were not introduced until 1920, and the first Olympic Village in 1932. The torch relay is a case in point. It was first introduced in the 1936 Olympics—the “Nazi” Olympics, as a means of linking symbolically the project of constructing a Germanic culture rooted in proclamations of Aryan supremacy to the Hellenic culture of the ancient Greeks. TO: Olympic Agenda 2020 Debate for the Future of the Olympic Movement FROM: Dr. David Curby (USA) - Secretary of the FILA Scientific Commission RE: Contribution to debate for Theme #2 Athletes: at the heart of the Olympic Movement DATE: April 15, 2014 It is an honor to offer perspectives from the INTERNATIONALFEDERATION OF ASSOCIATED WRESTLING STYLES (FILA) to the discussion which will shape the future of the Olympic Movement. Thank you for providing this opportunity to International Federations as well as individuals to participate in this important process. The theme of Athletes: at the heart of the Olympic Movement resonated with me in light of events and efforts within our wrestling community. Allow me to offer comments directed towards KEEPING THE ATHLETES’ EXPERIENCE AT THE HEART OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES. Many of the most famous athletes have received these honors. An athlete’s selection as the flag bearer for the parade of nations during the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games is a profound distinction and honor. As I watched the ceremonies of the London Games of 2012, I was struck by the number of wrestlers there were being mentioned as their nation’s flag bearer. This prompted me to do some further research regarding the history of this tradition, as well as how wrestlers have been involved in this tradition.
