WORLD-WIDE WRESTLING PARTICIPATION IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES AND WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Report prepared by Dr. David Curby (USA)-FILA Scientific Department One of the major themes used by the IOC in their decision-making process is their document entitled: EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR SPORTS AND DISCIPLINES – 2012. World-wide participation is a major component of the theme of “UNIVERSALITY.” The criteria for evaluation are listed from this document, along with the objective data for wrestling (listed in red). Freestyle wrestler Annabelle Ali of Cameroon was the nation's first woman flag bearer at the opening ceremony. The 2012 World Championships for Women included 2 medalists from India, signaling a welcome resurgence of wrestling in this country with such a vast population. The silver medal won by freestyle World Champion Sushil Kumar was the first Olympic wrestling medal for India since 1952. .
