Many of the winners at the continental qualifiers in Algeria and Serbia as well as the first world qualifying tourney in Ulaanbaatar found new places on the lower two-thirds of the rankings, while all of the ticket-holders to Rio 2016 via last year’s world championships were standing pat. Even wrestlers from the two “non-Olympic” weight categories – 61kg and 70kg – improved in their “home” category after successful qualifying performances at weights on the Rio 2016 schedule. Continental champions Magomedmurad GADZHIEV (POL) and Adam BATIROV (BRN), both at 70kg, each won qualifying events at 65kg. European champion Gadzhiev held onto his No.2 ranking at 70kg with a win at the regional qualifier in Zrenjanin, Serbia. Asia champion Batirov, meanwhile, qualified for Rio with a win over world bronze medalist at 70kg Yakup GOR (TUR) in the Ulaanbaatar semifinals at 65kg. Batirov’s victory lifted him from 19th to No.3 at 70kg – the biggest leap in freestyle for April. Meanwhile, world bronze medalist at 61kg Vladimir DUBOV (BUL) made the drop to 57kg and secured a ticket to Rio 2016 with four technical falls to climb from No.7 to third at featherweight. Evgheni NEDEALCO (MDA), successful at 70kg the previous two years including a silver medal at the 2015 Yasar Dogu meet, secured the special third-place ticket at 74kg in Ulaanbaatar, but slipped slightly in the rankings from No.9 at 70kg to 12th at welterweight. As for wrestlers unranked in March, Daniel LIGETI (HUN) climbed into the 125kg rankings at No.14 after a third place in Zrenjanin and a second place in Ulaanbaatar to qualify for his second Olympic Games. Beijing 2008 Olympian Istvan VEREB (HUN) won at 86kg in Zrenjanin for No.15. At 97kg, Ibragim BOLUKBASI (TUR) punched his ticket for Rio and grabbed No.15 in the rankings as a runner-up in Zrenjanin while Beijing 2008 bronze medalist Georgi KETOEV (ARM), ended a three-year hiatus with a victory in Ulaanbaatar and No.17 in the rankings. Wrestlers in the rankings are listed by name, country code, most notable or most recent result over the last 12 months, and their position in the previous rankings. 57kg – European championships bronze medal winner at 61kg Ivan GUIDEA (ROU) rolled over Riga silver medalist Andrey YATSENKO (UKR) by technical fall in Ulaanbaatar to join the bantam rankings at No.13 after being 11th at featherweight. 1. Snyder rolled to victory at the Yarygin Grand Prix, one year after finishing third in Krasnoyarsk (RUS), to head into the new year with his No.1 ranking at 97kg intact. Petriashvili, meanwhile, prevailed in Paris to support his claim to No.3 at 125kg. Yet, while only a handful of wrestlers in the top 10 of each category were in action in January, many of the medalists in Krasnoyarsk and Paris were unranked or positioned in the lower half of the rankings. This resulted in some churn in the second 10 as they look ahead to the continental championships this spring. World military champion Alan KHUGAEV (RUS) made the biggest leap in the rankings with a win at 125kg in Krasnoyarsk, going from unranked to No.8. Khugaev notched a 3-2 win in the final over Anzor BOLTUKAEV (RUS), who spent three months atop the 97kg rankings in 2016 before slumping to 11th in Rio de Janeiro. Also, at the Yarygin Grand Prix, Dauren KURUGLIEV (RUS) climbed one place to No.7, after defeating Mahammasjavad EBRAHIMIZIVLAEI (IRI), 4-3, in the final at 86kg.

Zhamalov, a 2019 U23 world champion, was one of four freestyle gold medalists for Russia on Thursday. In the 74kg final, Zhamalov scored the first point of the match off the activity clock and took a 1-0 lead into the break. Chamizo grabbed a 2-1 lead a minute into second period after securing a hard-fought takedown. Zhamlov kept the pressure on Chamizo, attempting a duck under with 25 seconds left. After Chamizo fended it off, Zhamalov came up with a body lock before eventually securing Chamizo's leg. With just under 10 seconds remaining, Zhamlov slipped behind Chamizo and scored a two-point action with two seconds remaining to earn the come-from-behind victory, 4-2. (Photo: UWW) CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (June 1) -- As the COVID pandemic swept the globe and impacted lives and economies worldwide, United World Wrestling - led by president Nenad Lalovic and the UWW bureau - worked to create financial opportunities for small, heavily affected nations keen to continue in their Olympic journey even as financial opportunities dwindled. In addition to existing programming, Lalovic and the bureau settled on direct assistance to support athletes and coaches in their quest to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Utilizing its established Technical Assistance program, UWW supported 121 athletes and coaches from 43 nations. "We were determined to assist all our national associations and stay united through the most difficult challenges," said Lalovic. "These past 16 months have tested our resilience, but we've stayed united as a family and through the efforts delivered by the UWW Development Team, we saw great buy-in and five athletes who were able to qualify."
