Staebler Makes Return to Baku Golden with Greco-Roman Title in GGP Final
Staebler Makes Return to Baku Golden with Greco-Roman Title in GGP Final BAKU (November 29) – World champion Frank STAEBLER (GER) made a triumphant return to Baku on Sunday, winning the 71kg Greco-Roman title as the curtain came down on the Golden Grand Prix Final wrestling tournament. Staebler finished with a bronze medal at the inaugural European Games staged in Baku in June, but then found his stride in July with a win at the prestigious Pytlansinski tourney in Poland which he followed with his first world championship title in Las Vegas in September. For Staebler, however, it was not just about winning a gold medal in Baku. It was about the perfect end to a year he described as “golden.” He even found a golden glitter to his bronze medal in June. “The bronze medal at the European Games was special since it was the first medal won by a German wrestler at the Games,” Staebler explained. “It will be legendary.” “But, I also got the chance to wrestle (Balint) Korpasi again,” he said of the Hungarian wrestler who defeated him in June and eventually took the Games’ silver medal. “It was nice to beat him (this time) because he is just a wrestling machine.” Korpasi, who fell to Staebler, 3-0, in the semifinals, rebounded with a 3-2 win over 2014 world bronze medalist Afshin BYABANGARD (IRI) in Sunday’s bronze medal finals. “It’s incredible to win here and it’s the first time I’ve ever won (a prize money) event like this,” the 26-year-old marketing assistant said. -

Snyder rolled to victory at the Yarygin Grand Prix, one year after finishing third in Krasnoyarsk (RUS), to head into the new year with his No.1 ranking at 97kg intact. Petriashvili, meanwhile, prevailed in Paris to support his claim to No.3 at 125kg. Yet, while only a handful of wrestlers in the top 10 of each category were in action in January, many of the medalists in Krasnoyarsk and Paris were unranked or positioned in the lower half of the rankings. This resulted in some churn in the second 10 as they look ahead to the continental championships this spring. World military champion Alan KHUGAEV (RUS) made the biggest leap in the rankings with a win at 125kg in Krasnoyarsk, going from unranked to No.8. Khugaev notched a 3-2 win in the final over Anzor BOLTUKAEV (RUS), who spent three months atop the 97kg rankings in 2016 before slumping to 11th in Rio de Janeiro. Also, at the Yarygin Grand Prix, Dauren KURUGLIEV (RUS) climbed one place to No.7, after defeating Mahammasjavad EBRAHIMIZIVLAEI (IRI), 4-3, in the final at 86kg. -

Zhamalov, a 2019 U23 world champion, was one of four freestyle gold medalists for Russia on Thursday. In the 74kg final, Zhamalov scored the first point of the match off the activity clock and took a 1-0 lead into the break. Chamizo grabbed a 2-1 lead a minute into second period after securing a hard-fought takedown. Zhamlov kept the pressure on Chamizo, attempting a duck under with 25 seconds left. After Chamizo fended it off, Zhamalov came up with a body lock before eventually securing Chamizo's leg. With just under 10 seconds remaining, Zhamlov slipped behind Chamizo and scored a two-point action with two seconds remaining to earn the come-from-behind victory, 4-2. Thirty weight categories in three styles will be contested over seven days of competition. The Individual World Cup is serving as a substitute event for the 2020 World Championships. The event was canceled after not fulfilling the criteria set forth by the UWW Bureau. The criteria included having at least 8 of 10 of the top nations from the 2019 World Championships and 70% of total athletes participate in 2020. The Individual World Cup represents international wrestling's return to competition and will lay the groundwork for safety protocols and countermeasures around all competitions. This will be vital to ensure a safe environment for future competitions in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics. The event has a prize pool of 300,000 Swiss Francs, which will be divided evenly across the 30 weight categories. Thirty-one returning world medalists, including five returning world champions, are entered in the field. Olympic champion Davor STEFANEK (SRB) will compete at 67kg (Photo: Gabor MARTIN, United World Wrestling) The Individual World Cup opens Saturday with Greco-Roman competition, which will be headlined by four Rio Olympic champions: Artur ALEKSANYAN (ARM) at 97kg, Davit CHAKVETADZE (RUS) at 87kg, Davor STEFANEK (SRB) at 67kg and Roman VLASOV (RUS) at 77kg. -

Lopez claimed his third Olympic Games gold medal at super heavyweight by sneaking past reigning world champion Riza KAYAALP (TUR) in the 130kg final at Rio 2016, while world champion Vlasov followed up a win in London four years ago with another gold medal performance in Rio de Janeiro. Of the four remaining Greco-Roman champions crowned at Carioca Arena, only Ismael BORRERO MOLINA (CUB) at 59kg was able to match Vlasov by moving seamlessly from world champion to the Olympic Games gold medal – his first. Like Lopez, two-time world champion Artur ALEKSANYAN (ARM), who slipped to No.2 in the rankings at 98kg after a loss at the European championships in March, reclaimed the top spot with a 3-0 victory over Yasmany LUGO CABRERA (CUB). Meanwhile, Davit CHAKVETADZE (RUS) went from third to No.1 at 85kg with a win over world champ Zhan BELENYUK (UKR) and 2014 world champion Davor STEFANEK (SRB) carved his way through a crowded field at 66kg to go from No.6 in the rankings to No.1. -
