Staebler Makes Return to Baku Golden with Greco-Roman Title in GGP Final Staebler Makes Return to Baku Golden with Greco-Roman Title in GGP Final BAKU (November 29) – World champion Frank STAEBLER (GER) made a triumphant return to Baku on Sunday, winning the 71kg Greco-Roman title as the curtain came down on the Golden Grand Prix Final wrestling tournament. Staebler finished with a bronze medal at the inaugural European Games staged in Baku in June, but then found his stride in July with a win at the prestigious Pytlansinski tourney in Poland which he followed with his first world championship title in Las Vegas in September. For Staebler, however, it was not just about winning a gold medal in Baku. It was about the perfect end to a year he described as “golden.” He even found a golden glitter to his bronze medal in June. “The bronze medal at the European Games was special since it was the first medal won by a German wrestler at the Games,” Staebler explained. “It will be legendary.” “But, I also got the chance to wrestle (Balint) Korpasi again,” he said of the Hungarian wrestler who defeated him in June and eventually took the Games’ silver medal. “It was nice to beat him (this time) because he is just a wrestling machine.” Korpasi, who fell to Staebler, 3-0, in the semifinals, rebounded with a 3-2 win over 2014 world bronze medalist Afshin BYABANGARD (IRI) in Sunday’s bronze medal finals. “It’s incredible to win here and it’s the first time I’ve ever won (a prize money) event like this,” the 26-year-old marketing assistant said. “Really, it has been a great year for me overall – a golden year.” Meanwhile, the only other reigning world champion in action Sunday night Zhan BELENYUK (UKR) had a couple of throw attempts countered by David CHAKVETADZE (RUS), as the European Games champion wrapped up a 9-0 technical fall at 2:46 of the 85kg final. Azerbaijan’s wrestling faithful, with only four bronze medals midway through the final session, were getting restless before 2013 world bronze medalist Shalva GADABADZE and European Games silver medalist Sabah SHARIATI grabbed the final two gold medals of the tourney. Gadabadze forced a second passivity call on Mahdi ALIYARI FEYZABADI (IRI) in the second period of their 98kg final to receive a point which his made stand for a 1-0 victory. United World Wrestling Rue du Château, 6, 1804 Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland T. 0041 21 312 84 26 F. 0041 21 312 84 27 Shariati, meanwhile, spotted Nurmakhan TINALIEV (KAZ) a 3-0 lead in the first period, but forced a disqualification on the Asia champion at 5:16 of the 130kg final while leading 7-3. In all, wrestlers from seven different countries won titles on the final evening of wrestling in this year’s GGP Final. In other gold medal match-ups, world and Olympic Games champion KIM Hyeon-Woo (KOR) recovered some from his 10th-place finish in Las Vegas with the 75kg crown while world bronze medalists Almat KEBISPAYEV (KAZ) and Lasha GOBADZE (GEO) secured titles at 59kg and 80kg, respectively. Lopez claimed his third Olympic Games gold medal at super heavyweight by sneaking past reigning world champion Riza KAYAALP (TUR) in the 130kg final at Rio 2016, while world champion Vlasov followed up a win in London four years ago with another gold medal performance in Rio de Janeiro. Of the four remaining Greco-Roman champions crowned at Carioca Arena, only Ismael BORRERO MOLINA (CUB) at 59kg was able to match Vlasov by moving seamlessly from world champion to the Olympic Games gold medal – his first. Like Lopez, two-time world champion Artur ALEKSANYAN (ARM), who slipped to No.2 in the rankings at 98kg after a loss at the European championships in March, reclaimed the top spot with a 3-0 victory over Yasmany LUGO CABRERA (CUB). Meanwhile, Davit CHAKVETADZE (RUS) went from third to No.1 at 85kg with a win over world champ Zhan BELENYUK (UKR) and 2014 world champion Davor STEFANEK (SRB) carved his way through a crowded field at 66kg to go from No.6 in the rankings to No.1.

The competition, opening Tuesday at Arena Riga, will feature freestyle and women’s wrestling sharing the mats for the first four days, concluding Saturday and Sunday with the focus on Greco-Roman. More than a dozen Olympic Games medalists are on the entry lists, including London 2012 freestyle gold medalist at 84kg Sharif SHARIFOV (AZE) and Beijing 2008 Greco-Roman champion Islambek ALBIEV (RUS) at 66kg. Among the world champions named on the preliminary rosters are Frank CHAMIZO (ITA) and Taha AKGUL (TUR) in freestyle with Oksana HERHEL (UKR) and Yulia TKACH (UKR) in women’s wrestling. Herhel and Tkach headline a Ukraine women’s squad that features five world champions, including Aleksandra KOHUT (48kg), Anna VASILENKO (58kg) and Alina MAKHYNIA (69kg). And, for the curious, Ukraine’s other squad members, Yulia KHAVALDZHY (53kg), Tatyana KIT (55kg) and Alla CHERKASOVA (75kg), have all won bronze medals on the world stage. • Mishin Leads Charge of Ageless Masters on Grecoroman World Rankings
From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: Mishin Leads Charge of Ageless Masters on Greco-Roman World Rankings Date: May 5, 2016 at 8:59 AM To: [email protected] Mishin Leads Charge of Ageless Masters on Greco-Roman World Rankings By William May // Photos: Sachiko Hotaka and Gabor Martin CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (May 5) – Ageless warrior Alexej MISHIN (RUS) led the charge of 30-something masters onto and up the United World Wrestling rankings for Greco-Roman wrestling in the month of April. Even with a number of younger wrestlers eager to qualify the 85kg category for Russia, the 37-year-old master was dispatched to Zrenjanin and turned away world champion Melonin NOUMONVI (FRA) as well as 2014 junior world runner-up Denis KUDLA (GER) for the tournament title and an Olympic berth. And so, April became the month of the “ageless masters” as a handful of veterans took advantage of their chances to qualify their countries for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – while improving their places on the Greco-Roman rankings. Mishin, in and out the rankings in 2015, made the biggest leap of April, going from unranked to No.5 and gave Russia its sixth berth to Rio 2016 in the classic style. Ionut PANAIT (ROU) // Photo by Sachiko Hotaka Along with Mishin, 35-year-old Ionut PANAIT (ROU), a European silver medalist in 2010 at the “tender” age of 29, ended a five-year hiatus from competition and won Rio 2016 qualification at 66kg in Ulaanbaatar. His victory lifted him to No.15 in the rankings.

Vlasov, who was welcomed to 2016 with a shock loss at the Ivan Poddubny tourney in January, capped pre-Olympic preparations with an 8-0 technical fall over fellow Rio qualifier Yurisandy HERNANDEZ RIOS (CUB) in the 75kg final at the Grand Prix of Spain. In addition to Vlasov’s win in Madrid, three more world champions and rankings leaders were also in action in July, wrapping up their Rio 2016 regimen with victories at the German Grand Prix in Dortmund. Local favorite Frank STAEBLER (GER) stopped 2015 world bronze medalist Artem SURKOV (RUS), 2-1 for the 66kg crown and his third tournament title since winning the world title in September. Turkey’s world champion duo of Selcuk CEBI (80kg) and Riza KAYAALP (130kg) also recorded victories in Dortmund for some momentum heading into Rio 2016. Cebi, who qualified for Rio at 75kg, edged KIM Hyeon-Woo (KOR), 3-1, in the 80kg final to ensure himself the top spot in this non-Olympic weight category.

Lopez won three bouts at 130kg, including a technical fall over fellow Pan American Games gold medalist Yasmany LUGO CABRERA (CUB) to regain No.2 in the super heavyweight rankings in the classic style. Lopez, who stumbled to Riza KAYAALP (TUR) in last September’s world championship final, began the year at No.2 but slipped to No.3 in April after Aleksander CHERNETSKI (UKR) won the Ukraine International and finished runner-up to Kayaalp at the European championships. Successful in his first competition since Las Vegas, Lopez may well be eying his third Olympic Games gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and his eighth world-level title – second only to 12 titles by Alexander KARELIN (RUS) in Greco-Roman. With many of the top wrestlers in the final phases of their preparations for Rio 2016, Frank STAEBLER (GER), RYU Han-Soo (KOR) and KIM Hyeon- Woo (KOR) were the only Greco-Roman world champions in action in June. Frank STAEBLER (GER) // Photo: Gabor Martin Staebler posted four wins at 71kg at the Pytlasinski Cup for his second tourney title at this non-Olympic weight category since winning the 66kg world title in Las Vegas to hold onto his top ranking at lightweight.
