  • Introduction
1 INTRODUCTION “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” Charles Darwin. This study is a retelling of a story of mistaken identity that has persisted in the annals of decorative arts for almost a century. The subjects are three examples of exceptional curvilinear chairs made out of exotic wood and forged in the great change and cultural upheaval in the first third of the nineteenth century in the United States. The form of these chairs has been assumed to belong to a later generation, but the analysis in the pages that follow attempt to restore their birthright as an earlier transitional step in the evolution of American furniture. These three curvilinear chairs – significantly different in design from earlier nineteenth-century forms – are remarkable as they exemplify how exquisite the curvilinear form could be in its early stages. Despite the fact that these chairs are an important link in furniture history, they have not been fully appreciated by either scholars or connoisseurs. Although there were many curvilinear chairs produced in the period, this study will focus on three remarkably similar examples: The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s side chair (68.202.1); the Merchant’s House Museum’s twelve side chairs (2002.2012.1-12); and, finally a set of sixteen owned by a descendent of the New York cabinetmaker Duncan Phyfe (Cat. 46 in An Elegant Assortment: The Furniture of Duncan Phyfe and His Contemporaries, 1800-1840).1 It has been suggested this set was 1 The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s curvilinear side chair (68.202.1) is described on website: “As craftsmen transitioned from the Early to the Late Grecian style (the latter is also referred to as the Grecian Plain Style), they began to incorporate more curvilinear shapes and new 2 made by Duncan Phyfe for his daughter Eliza Phyfe Vail.

  • An Architectural Heritage with Strong Islamic Influence
Fernando Branco Correia, Int. J. of Herit. Archit., Vol. 1, No. 4 (2017) 640–653 SOUTHERN PORTUGAL – AN ARCHITECTURAL HERitaGE WITH STRONG ISLAMIC INFLUENCE FERnando BRANCO CORREIA CIDEHUS – Universidade de Évora, Portugal. ABSTRACT The western part of al-Andalus was a peripheral zone of the Islamic World, far from the area of the Gua- dalquivir River and the Mediterranean coast. But in this western area there are important architectural elements from the Islamic era. In addition to the reuse of defensive and civilian structures from Roman times, there were military building programmes on the coastlines, from the 9th century onwards, with the arrival of Norse raiders. Moreover, some chronicles refer, for the 10th and 11th centuries, to the con- struction of ‘qasaba’(s) (military enclosures) in some cities and the total reconstruction of city walls. Recent archaeological activity has made evident traces of small palaces, houses and city walls but there is also an architectural heritage visible relative to other buildings – such as mosques and even small ‘ribat’(s) along the coastline. Some techniques, like that of ‘rammed earth’, are known to have been common in the Almohad period. In general terms, one can identify several remnants of buildings – religious, civil and military – with different construction techniques and traditions, not only the reuse of older constructions but also the erection of new buildings. On the other hand, it is possible to find parallels to these buildings in such varied areas as other parts of the ancient al-Andalus, North Africa, Syria and even Samarra (Iraq). This area of the Iberian Peninsula, described in chronicles as Gharb al-Andalus, is a hybrid region, where different traditions converged, taking advantage of the legacy of previous periods, mixing that legacy with contributions from North Africa, different areas of the Mediterranean and even the Middle East.

(Photo: UWW) CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (June 1) -- As the COVID pandemic swept the globe and impacted lives and economies worldwide, United World Wrestling - led by president Nenad Lalovic and the UWW bureau - worked to create financial opportunities for small, heavily affected nations keen to continue in their Olympic journey even as financial opportunities dwindled. In addition to existing programming, Lalovic and the bureau settled on direct assistance to support athletes and coaches in their quest to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Utilizing its established Technical Assistance program, UWW supported 121 athletes and coaches from 43 nations. "We were determined to assist all our national associations and stay united through the most difficult challenges," said Lalovic. "These past 16 months have tested our resilience, but we've stayed united as a family and through the efforts delivered by the UWW Development Team, we saw great buy-in and five athletes who were able to qualify."
