    COMMEMORATIVE ACT: 30 YEARS OF THE DICASTERY CHRONICLE On 12 June 2012, the Pontifical Council for Culture celebrated thirty years of its existence. In the morning, people who had been involved in the life of the Dicastery since its creation gathered in the church of Sant’Anna in the Vatican for a Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi. In the afternoon, the celebration continued with a Public Session held in the auditorium of our new building, Palazzo Pio X in via della Conciliazione, to reflect on the past, present and future of the Dicastery with the objectives outlined by John Paul II. In fact, the PCC was born after a long period of gestation on 20 May 1982 as a fruit of the Second Vatican Council. The ceremony was overseen by His Excellency the Delegate, Monsignor Carlos Azevedo and began with a brief greeting by the Secretary of the Council, His Excellency Monsignor Barthélemy Adoukonou. Aware of the history and prehistory of these last thirty years, the first moment of the commemorative act, which took the form of a triptych, was dedicated to the past. Monsignor Melchor Sánchez de Toca, undersecretary of the Dicastery illustrated its origins using his long study of the Dicastery’s genesis. With the help of Rai, the Italian State Television company, a film was produced and were given a preview after a brief introduction by Giovanni Minoli, Director of Rai Storia, the channel which would subsequently transmit the programme. The Council then offered flowers to the journalist Antonia Pillosio as a sign of thanks for the mediatic vision she brought to our work.

    The Holy See POPE FRANCIS STATUTES OF THE SECRETARIAT FOR COMMUNICATION Preamble The Secretariat for Communication has been created in order to respond to the current context of communication, characterized by the presence and evolution of digital media and by factors of convergence and interactivity. This new situation requires a reorganization that takes into account the historic development of the Apostolic See’s structure of communication and moves towards a unified integration and management. Chapter 1 Nature and Responsibilities Art. 1 §1. The Secretariat for Communication is a Dicastery of the Roman Curia to which the Holy Father has entrusted the Apostolic See’s system of communication, in conformity with his Motu Proprio of 27 June 2015 on the current context of communication. §2. The Secretariat for Communication, unified in its structure and with respect for relevant operational characteristics, unifies all the Holy See’s entities involved in communication, so that the entire system may respond effectively to the needs of the Church’s mission of evangelization. §3. The Secretariat for Communication will consider new models, technical innovations and forms of communication in order to integrate them into this system, which is at the service of the Holy 2 See’s mission.     OLD AGE: OUR FUTURE The elderly after the pandemic A lesson to be learned It is time to “find the courage to create spaces where everyone can feel called, and to make possible new forms of hospitality, fraternity and solidarity.”1 This is what Pope Francis said in his prayer of March 27, 2020 in an empty St. Peter's Square after he reminded everyone that: “greedy for gain, we pay attention only to things, are led astray by our impatience. We did not heed your warnings or come to our senses in the face of wars and global injustices. We were deaf to the cry of the poor and of our gravely ill planet; we carried on undaunted...” 2 The Pontifical Academy for Life - together with the Dicastery for Integral Human Development - has felt itself obliged to contribute to a reflection on the lessons to be learned from the tragedy of the pandemic, on its consequences for today, and for the immediate future of our societies. In this context, the Academy has previously issued two “Notes” on this subject: “Pandemic and Universal Brotherhood” and “Humana Communitas in the Age of Pandemic: Untimely Meditations on Life’s Rebirth,”3 and the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life has published “In Loneliness the Coronavirus Kills More.”4 The pandemic has produced a twofold awareness: on the one hand the interdependence of everyone, and on the other greater attention to inequalities. Dr Herzl outlined to the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church the full details of the Zionist project, providing assurances that the various Holy Places in Palestine would be “ex-territorialised” to ensure their security and protection, and sought the Pope’s endorsement and support, preferably through the issuing of a pro-Zionist encyclical.

  • Pastoral Guidelines
    The decision to hold a World Day for Grandparents and Older People has come at a time marked by a pandemic and by the suffering of our older generations in recent months in every part of the world. Reports of elderly people having to die alone and then not even being given a funeral, have been a cause of deep pain to the Church. It is one of the crosses of our time that was rightly brought to mind during the Way of the Cross with the Pope on Good Friday this year: “People jumped out of the ambulance dressed like astronauts, wearing protective suits, gloves, masks and face shields. They took away my grandfather who had been having difficulty breathing. That was the last time that I saw my grandfather. He died a few days later in hospital. I think of how lonely he must have felt. I could not be near him physically to say goodbye and to comfort him”.1 To be unable to be close to those who suffer is at odds with a Christian’s calling to show compassion. This World Day is an opportunity to reaffirm that the Church can never remain distant from those who carry a cross. The theme chosen by the Holy Father, “I am with you always”, expresses clearly that, during the pandemic and in the better times that will hopefully follow, every ecclesial community wishes to be with the elderly always. It was over a year ago when the first wave of the pandemic was at its height that the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life wrote: “as individuals and as local Churches, we can do a lot for the elderly: pray for them, cure the disease of loneliness, activate solidarity networks and much more.
