In this Issue: Eucharistic Adoration 3 Our Lady’s Month 3 Rector’s Ruminations 4 News from the Vatican 5

Saint Joseph Cathedral is called to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ as a community. We are committed: to our urban neighborhoods, to being the Cathedral of the Diocese, and to fellowship, formation, sacrament, and prayer. Fourth Sunday of Easter Acts 13:14, 43-52 • Psalm 100:1-2, 3, 5 Revelation 7:9, 14-17 • John 10:27-30 Throughout the Easter season, our readings have given us glimpses into the life of the newborn Church and the bold witness ThisAt The Cathedral Week of the early disciples in spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ to all who would listen. These disciples were the first to live a May 12 - 19, 2019 stewardship way of life and their example is as relevant today as it was 2,000 years ago. In the First Reading, from the Acts of the Apostles, we catch vvvvv up with Paul and Barnabas in Antioch. While they certainly have some success in reaching many people there with the message of , others are downright infuriated by their words and SUN Fourth Sunday of Easter send them packing. Yet, we read that “the disciples were filled 12 Mother’s Day with joy and the Holy Spirit.” Overall, it seems as if Paul and (Sat) 6:00 pm Mass for John Davis Barnabas had failed in Antioch. But this seeing failure has not 8:00 am Mass for Sophie Moses robbed them of their joy. What’s more, they are filled to the brim with the abundant gifts of the Holy Spirit. How is this possible? 10:30 am Mass for the Parishioners It is only possible because Paul and Barnabas saw themselves as First Communion nothing more and nothing less than stewards of Christ and His Good News. This realization brought them freedom — to offer MON Our Lady of Fatima themselves and their lives to others for the sake of the Gospel. 13 The “results” of their efforts were up to God. 12:05 pm Mass for Shirley Sheets This Spirit-filled, joy-filled life is available to all of us, all these years later. It can be achieved when we recognize, like Paul and Barnabas, that all we have and all we are is a gift from God, meant TUE Matthias, apostle 14 to be shared with others for His glory. Of course, living as God’s 12:05 pm Mass for Dr. Adiel Anghie stewards does not mean a life of ease or a life free of sacrifice. Sometimes the steward’s life involves great challenges, requiring all the strength and love one has to give. But in the end there is WED Saint Isidore simply no more satisfying way to live. 15 12:05 pm Mass for the Parishioners This Sunday is often referred to as Good Shepherd Sunday since the Gospel passages for each cycle of the Lectionary always refer to Jesus as a shepherd. On this Good Shepherd Sunday, we THU Easter Weekday also observe the World Day of Prayer for Vocations in which we 16 fulfill the Lord’s instruction to, “Pray the Lord of the harvest to 12:05 pm Mass for Ron Radcliffe send laborers into his harvest” (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). 4 The Cathedral Courier May 12, 2019 Pope issues new norms on mandatory abuse reporting, bishop accountability By Carol Glatz, Catholic News Service

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — has revised and clarified norms and procedures for holding bishops and religious superiors accountable in pro- tecting minors as well as in protecting members of religious orders and semi- narians from abuse. The new juridical instrument is meant to help bishops and religious leaders around the world clearly understand their duties and church law, underlining how they are ultimately responsible for proper governance and protecting those entrusted to their care. For this reason, the new document establishes a clearer set of universal procedures for reporting suspected abuse, carrying out initial in- vestigations and protecting victims and whistleblowers. The new document, given “,” on the pope’s own initiative, was titled “” (“You are the light of the world”), based on a verse from the Gospel of St. Matthew (5:14). Pope Francis prays in front of the Blessed Sacrament and a candle in memory of victims of “The crimes of sexual abuse offend sexual abuse as he visits St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral in Dublin Aug. 25, 2018. Week of May 12 During these apparitions, the lady urged the children to pray for sinners and above Monday all to pray the Rosary. On October 13, the last of the apparitions, the children were Acts 11:1-18 joined by a crowd of around 70,000 people, who witnessed what came to be called Ps 42:2-3; 43:3, 4 “The Miracle of the Sun.” Today pilgrimage to the site of the apparitions continues John 10:1-10 all year round. The largest crowds gather on May 13 and October 13, when up to a million of the faithful come to pray and participate in processions, both during the day and at night, by the Tuesday light of tens of thousands of candles. Acts 1:15-17, 20-26 May 14 Saint Matthias Ps 113:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 - († 1st c) was one of the first to follow our Savior; and he John 15:9-17 was an eye-witness of all His divine actions up to the very day of the Ascension. He was one of the seventy-two disciples; but our Lord had not conferred upon Wednesday him the dignity of an apostle. And yet, he was to have this great glory, for Matthias Acts 12:24 - 13:5 was chosen by the apostles through the Holy Spirit to replace Judas. Matthias Ps 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8 shared with his -apostles the persecution in Jerusalem, and, when the time John 12:44-50 came for the ambassadors of Christ to separate, he set out for the countries allotted to him. Tradition tells us that these were Cappadocia, Egypt and Ethiopia. Thursday Acts 13:13-25 May 15 - Saint Isidore the Farmer (c.1070-1130) was born in Madrid to poor Ps 89:2-3, 21-22, 25, 27 parents who sent him to work for a landowner. He was very devout and married John 13:16-20 a like-minded woman, Maria de la Cabeza (Torribia), who also became a saint. Isidore attended daily Mass and was often late arriving at the fields, but he managed Friday to get his work done nonetheless. He shared the little he had with the poor. Acts 13:26-33 It is fitting to remember him in the northern hemisphere’s agricultural season. King Theodoric the Goth, an Arian ruler tolerant of Catholics, employed Acts 13:44-52 the help of John in trying to negotiate an end to the persecution of Arians in Ps 2:6-7, 8-9, 10-11 the Eastern part of the empire. John went to Constantinople to present the John 14:7-14 demands of Theodoric to Emperor Justin I, the initiator of the persecutions. Sunday Justin agreed to all of the demands except allowing Arians who had converted Acts 14:21-27 under pressure to return to their heretical ways. The king was infuriated that John failed in his Ps 145:8-9, 10-11, 12-13 attempt to bring about resolution; therefore, he sentenced him to prison where he eventually Revelation 21:1-5 died. St. John is not only revered as “a victim for Christ,” but also remembered for introducing John 13:31-33, 34-35 the Alexandrian system of calculating the date of Easter.
