Home Front (The) 1940-1941 Welcome to America in the '40's! The end of the Great Depression may be in sight, and spirits are higher. Teenagers linger over malted milks at drugstore counters as their parents head for the local movie house where Gone With The Wind is becoming the biggest hit in motion picture history. Radio is still king, although one of the big attractions of the New York World's Fare is something called television. Watch - and listen - as Franklin D. Roosevelt teaches his grandchildren to swim at their country home in Hyde Park, NY. Cross the country to San Francisco and visit the DiMaggio family restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf. There meet America's most popular sports hero. It's the "summer of the streak": Joe DiMaggio makes at least one hit in 56 consecutive games - a new record. In this last summer of innocence, journey on west to Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, where some of our boys (and their girls) seem to have the best duty in the US Navy - until Sunday morning, December 7, 1941. (60 mins) 59. Home Front (The) 1942-1943 Suddenly Berlin, Rome, and Tokyo are not so far away. And suddenly the boys dying on the battlefields abroad are OUR boys. Rumors of enemy submarines off our Atlantic coast turn out to be true. Youngsters leave their soda fountain hangouts to collect scrap and serve as junior air-raid wardens. A new work force of American women helps push production to levels never before thought possible, as planes, tanks, shops, guns, and ammunition replace cars, radios and refrigerators on our assembly lines. Bob Hope, Judy Garland and other Hollywood stars entertain our fighting forces around the world. Babe Ruth and Walter Johnson come out of retirement to sell bonds. Meanwhile, at a secret air base in Florida, Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle is training a select group of heroes-to-be for a dramatic bombing raid on Japan. Some will not return, but their successful attack sends a clear message to the enemy. Before 1943 is over, the USA has challenged the Axis powers in North Africa and southern Italy, on Guadalcanal and Tarawa. In 2 years Americans prove that no sacrifice is too large in order to preserve a way of life. (60 mins) 60. Home Front (The) 1944-1945 The tide has turned. Postwar hopes and dreams fill American hearts and minds. But radio broadcasts and newsreels remind Americans that the fighting and dying continue. Never before has a war been captured so completely by the motion picture camera. On the home front, Pres. Roosevelt is reelected by a landslide; the worst circus disaster in history occurs in Hartford, CT; an Army B-25 bomber crashes into the Empire State Building; the UN charter is drafted; and because of a newspaper strike, NY City's mayor, Fiorello H. LaGuardia, reads the comics over the radio. Also share fascinating moments with Ronald Regan, Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Joe Louis, Army vet Hank Greenberg, and the West Point "Touchdown Twins," Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard. But the Slogan "V for Victory" is on everyone's mind as V-E Day and V-J Day approach. The joyous sights and sounds of V-J Day, a once-in- a-lifetime event, remain as moving today as they were in that not-so-far-away year, 1945. (60 mins) 75. Martin Luther King "I Have A Dream" (VHS) The electrifying speech that changed the hearts and minds of a bitterly divided nation. When 200,000 civil rights marchers - black and white - gathered at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963, they expected to hear strong words from their spiritual leader, Martin Luther King. What they did not expect was a speech of such heartfelt passion and poetic eloquence that it echoes still in our memory. (25 mins) 75. It world have been quite easy for him to have avoided the turmoil of a public life. Yet he chose to serve his country through its worst economic depression and most terrifying World War. FDR felt an inner calling, was fueled by a drive that was almost preordained. This confidence and resolve came through in his every address. Be it campaign speech, state address, fireside chat, or wartime exhortation, the speeches of FDR are filled with the ease of confidence, the sense of manifest destiny, that made him such a natural leader Even today the wit and easy charm of his speeches will delight and inspire you. You'll see all the major addresses, from his 1960 Presidential campaign through his three controversial years in office. (60 mins) 96. Speeches Collection: Martin Luther King, Jr. King was perhaps the most inspirational speaker of all times. His words moved a nation with their gripping, passionate plea for racial justice. (60 mins) 97. Speeches Collection: Robert F. Kennedy Robert Kennedy , the young vibrant senator from NY, was one of the most charismatic speakers of our time. (55 mins) 98. Speeches Collection: Winston Churchill Winston Churchill was the British lion, its bulldog, the defender of its freedom, the pride of her people. In the dark early years of World War II - when all the world cowered before Hitler and his hordes - Churchill alone stood firm. He led his tiny island nation through those trying times with his eloquent, heart-felt exhortations. Through his Parliamentary and radio speeches to the British people, Churchill was to summon up such wellsprings of national pride and fervor that his poetic words would later earn him a Nobel Prize for literature. Now, you can experience firsthand what those stony words of resolve must have meant to a frightened people. The speeches of Churchill represent one of the great legacies of our history in the 20th century. Discover the immense power of his words for yourself. (30 mins) 99. Speeches of Dwight D. Eisenhower Eisenhower was not the country's most forceful or dynamic President, and neither was he the most eloquent public speaker. He spoke haltingly and ill-at-ease. But he was a man of his time, and his honest down-home Kansas farm boy style struck 1950's America as a true note. His speeches do not zing with witticisms and rhetorical barbs, but they do communicate the forthrightness of man. Eisenhower never put on air and his speeches are a direct reflection of his era. Elvis Presley, ducktails, and cars with fins have all been relived - so we invite you to "like Ike" once again. (60 mins 5A. Watson-Barker Listening Test Form A 5B. Headline Stories of the Century - A Newsreel Library of American Nostalgia Throughout their 50 year run on the nation's movie screens, until they disappeared in the late 60s, theatrical newsreels featur4ed stories of national disasters, wars, politics, and often upheavals. They usually ended with an odd story, odd personality or the comic side of life. The intent was to "lighten-up" the newsreel based on the premise that Americans came to the movies "to get away from it all" and to be entertained. Watchable over and over, these segments are educational, historical, informative, and infinitely collectible. Capturing the way we were, this black-and-white newsreel trivia was compiled and edited from the famous Hearst News library. It's nostalgia at its finest. Some of the 107 newsreel segments include: Rudolph Valentino's death, Mickey Mouse premiers, the 20's and 30's Dance Marathons, Clark Gable is a Star, Howard Hughes crashes, the "It" Girl of the 20's, 1937 Miss America says No, the FBI and the Gangsters, "Wrong Way Corrigan," Galloping Gerty breaks, Hope and Crosby join USO, one-armed Pete Gray, the Bikini Sensation, Rita Hayworth and Aly Khan, the Edsel, Hula Hoop craze, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis in the Army. Murder of JFK: Confession of an Assassin Since 1989, private investigator Joe West had diligently devoted his time, money, and life to an exhaustive search for the real killer(s) of President JFK. After a dedicated, laborious and often frustrating journey filled with dead-ends, West had all but given up when he received a tip from a most unlikely source...an FBI agent who demanded to remain anonymous. The tip led Joe West to Joliet State Penn where an inmate named James E. Files was serving a 50-year sentence for shooting an Illinois state policeman. West had reason to believe that Files was indeed involved in the assassination of JFK. What followed was a relationship between Joe West and James Files which grew so close that Files was virtually ready to reveal his role in the murder of the President. As fate would have it however shortly before the confession was to be taped Joe West suddenly died of a heart attack. Moved by what he believed was the death of a real friend and a sense of obligation to both West and West's widow, Files still agreed to give a complete interview, in which he confessed (in great detail) to his complicity in the events that took place on Nov. 22, 1963 in Dallas TX. The video is presented in its uncut form with no editorial comments added or deleted. The publishers can only hope that it will lead to further investigations of the events and profiles that comprised what is still considered one of the most shocking events in American history. 125. For most people, understanding what someone else means is not always an easy task. There are often confusing double messages and conflicting expectations, a situation that is especially challenging for adolescents. In this video, a group of 10 Halifax high school students agree to take part in a 2 week project to explore how issues arising from gender communication affect both their social and intimate relationships. It was sometimes an unsettling process: "Telling exactly what you mean involves a lot of risk," admits Jessie, as he reflects on why boys are less open with their feelings than girls. And some of the girls in the group are very direct about their standards of behavior: "I want someone who can grab my heart through words instead of grabbing my wrist," declares Michelle. These honest, often intense discussions are interspersed with role-playing and peer interviews. The students cover an impressive range of concerns such as flirting and confusion over body language, sex, love, and ways of resolving anger in relationships. Family Studies teachers, guidance counselors, and leaders of community-based youth groups will find this video a useful resource. While the short, themed segments and a brisk pace are designed to stimulate discussion, this tape offers valuable insights into the unique and ever-changing realm of teen communication. (29 mins) 48. Women With A Past Brings together 4 20th century artists, Christine Choy, Yvonne Rainer, Martha Rosler & Nancy Spero, in videotaped interviews whose shape and editing by Lyn Blumenthal is in itself an examination of the art of documentary. Rainer's personal involvement in psychoanalysis manifests itself in scenes such as the one from her film "The Man Who Envied Women". In "Losing," Rosler explores the ways in which people imagine their lives are separate from, rather than subject to the world around them. Spero's political art work found its first real impetus in the Vietnam War. Choy came to the US in the activist '60's. Her personal experience of a mixed ethnic and national background finds expression in the film "Mississippi Triangle". (70 mins)
