Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono H. Muhammad Jusuf Kalla Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was sworn in as Indonesias sixth president and the first to be directly elected, replacing Megawati Soekarnoputri on October 20, 2004. Susilo, a retired Army General, took an oath before the plenary session of the Peoples Consultative Assembly (MPR). Also sworn in was Jusuf Kalla as the Vice President. Both Susilo and Jusuf Kalla were former coordinating ministers during Megawati Soekarnoputris administration. The ceremony was attended by five heads of state : Bruneis Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Australian Prime Minister John Howard, East Timor Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Also present were foreign diplomats, MPR members and several former ministers and state officials. President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his speech, which he delivered at the State Palace after his inauguration at the Peoples Consultative Assembly said that the new government will stimulate the economy in order to achieve higher economic growth, which can absorb more employment and help alleviate poverty. The new government will continue to adopt and implement open economic policies, in order to integrate the economy with regional and international economies. In doing so, the government will focus on short- and medium-term agendas in enhancing productivity and competitiveness. Encouragement will be given by the new government for investors to build infrastructure. To combat corruption, anticorruption program will be launched. The new government will prioritize and improve the policies on the education and health sectors. President Susilo added that his government will continue to uphold the free and active principle of foreign policy, and Indonesia is determined to become a voice that promotes peace, increases prosperity and defends justice. Indonesia will continue to grow as a democratic, open, modern, pluralistic and tolerant nation. President Susilo Bambang assured that the new government will work hard to keep the trust of all Indonesian people and the whole nation, in order to meet constitutional requirements within the next five years.
