Development and Analysis of a Multi-Link Suspension for Racing Applications
Development and analysis of a multi-link suspension for racing applications W. Lamers DCT 2008.077 Master’s thesis Coach: dr. ir. I.J.M. Besselink (Tu/e) Supervisor: Prof. dr. H. Nijmeijer (Tu/e) Committee members: dr. ir. R.M. van Druten (Tu/e) ir. H. Vun (PDE Automotive) Technische Universiteit Eindhoven Department Mechanical Engineering Dynamics and Control Group Eindhoven, May, 2008 Abstract University teams from around the world compete in the Formula SAE competition with prototype formula vehicles. The vehicles have to be developed, build and tested by the teams. The University Racing Eindhoven team from the Eindhoven University of Technology in The Netherlands competes with the URE04 vehicle in the 2007-2008 season. A new multi-link suspension has to be developed to improve handling, driver feedback and performance. Tyres play a crucial role in vehicle dynamics and therefore are tyre models fitted onto tyre measure- ment data such that they can be used to chose the tyre with the best characteristics, and to develop the suspension kinematics of the vehicle. These tyre models are also used for an analytic vehicle model to analyse the influence of vehicle pa- rameters such as its mass and centre of gravity height to develop a design strategy. Lowering the centre of gravity height is necessary to improve performance during cornering and braking. The development of the suspension kinematics is done by using numerical optimization techniques. The suspension kinematic objectives have to be approached as close as possible by relocating the sus- pension coordinates. The most important improvements of the suspension kinematics are firstly the harmonization of camber dependant kinematics which result in the optimal camber angles of the tyres during driving. -

Not just for the smooth quiet power, wide torque range, cheap running costs and minimal maintenance, but to design and build cars to take advantage of the simplicity and flexible packaging offered by electric technology. Some new knowledge and skills of battery and electric drive systems are required, but once you have an understanding of this, putting it all together is much simpler and quicker than using a petrol or diesel drivetrain. Why? The motors and controllers come ready to bolt on and plug together and all the sensors required are usually built into the motor. Cooling systems, fuel storage and pump, gearbox, differential, exhaust system and complex wiring harness are not required. There are a few more components required to deal with high voltage electrical power, but other than this, it is really not much more complex than building a radio controlled electric car. -

Body Vehicle Design Process
Appendix A Body Vehicle Design Process The purpose of this appendix is to provide the reader with an overview of product development technology and, in particular, of the role that computers play in it. To keep the size of this appendix within reasonable limits, our attention is concen- trated on the car body only. The reason for this choice is that the car body has some peculiar aspects and features that make it different from that of the other car subsystems, since the body is designed keeping in mind not only its technical characteristics and production technologies, but also the aesthetic characteristics of its ‘style’, which plays a fun- damental role in determining the commercial success of a car. From a technical standpoint, a conventional steel body includes the body shell and trimming which are primarily made by thin-wall elements, whose external surface performs usually aesthetic functions; this fact alone justifies peculiar engineering techniques. These thin sheet elements of complex shape required the development of particular representation rules, that are different from those used for mechanical components (engine, transmission, suspensions, etc.), and that are limited to a few views and sections, aimed to keep the representation as simple as possible. A further specific characteristic is related to the high capital investments needed to mass produce the vehicle body, with respect to its relatively short production life, usually limited to a few years. The body shell and trimming are totally revised at each new model launch, i.e. every 5 ÷ 7 years on average, and this contrasts with what happens with many other components, invisible to the customer, that may be reused with only incremental improvements on next generation models. -

Acquisition Sustainability in the Car Manufacturing Industry
Acquisition Sustainability in the Car Manufacturing Industry Master Thesis International Business and Manage ment - International Financial Management - Marcel Diender Apeldoorn, 4 May 2009 Acquisition Sustainability in the Car Manufacturing Industry Report as result of a graduation project, conducted from June 2008 till May 2009. Author: Marcel Diender Under supervision of: University of Groningen Faculty of Management and Organisation Groningen, the Netherlands University of Uppsala Faculty of Business Studies Uppsala, Sweden First supervisor: Dr. E.P. Jansen University of Groningen Department of Accounting Second supervisor: Mr. Drs. H.A. Ritsema University of Groningen Department of International Business and Management - II - Abstract This research performs a multiple case study about large acquisitions in the car manufacturing industry. It studies the determinants of the sustainability of an acquisition in this industry by researching two cases. One of these cases is unsustainable, the acquisition of Chrysler Corporation by Daimler-Benz, while the other case is sustainable, the acquisition of Audi by Volkswagen. The theoretical assumption, based on literature review, is that the sustainability of an acquisition in this industry is depending on the success of the acquisition with the parent company’s strategy as an intervening variable. The success, in turn, is depending on five success factors: ‘previous acquisition experience’, ‘strategic fit’, ‘focus on core business’, ‘cultural fit’ and ‘integration’. The results of this research show that the relationship between success and sustainability of an acquisition in the car manufacturing industry is directly and positively related. The parent company strategy is not acting as an intervening variable on this relationship when the target company is relatively large. -
