The Hymenoptera of a Dry Meadow on Limestone

Gagarina 9: Poland e-mail: ulrichw @ cc.uni.torun.pl 'I'HE HYMENOPTERA OF A DRY MEADOW ON LIMESTONE: SPECIES COMPOSITION, ABUNDANCE AND BIOMASS ABSTRACT: In 1986 and 1988 the hymenopterous fauna of a semixerophytic meadow on lime stone near Gottingen (FRG) was studied using ground-photo-eclectors. A total of 4982 specimens be longing to 475 different species \vere collected. Extrapolations from double-log functions revealed that there may be as many as 1330 parasitoid species present per year. 455 of the 475 species were parasito ids. 155 of them attack dipterans. 48 lepidopterans. 36 beetles. 23 wasps, 22 plant hoppers and 13 ap hids. 47 of the species are egg-parasitoids and parasitoids of miners. ectophytophages count for 44 of 2 the \V asp species. The abundance of the wasp fauna was rather high ( 1120 ± 53 in d. m- a- I ( 1986) and 2 1 335 ± 42 ind. m - a- ( 1988). Most abundant were the parasitoids of miners, gall-makers and the egg parasitoids. Compared \vith the high abundance the biomass was low. In 1986 the wasps weighed a total 2 1 2 1 of 194 ± 24 n1gDW m- a- and in 1988 only 69 ± 20 mgDW m- a- . The parasitoids of ectophytopha gous lepidopterans and coleopterans counted for n1ore than half of the whole biomass. (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) in Eastern Fennoscandia

[email protected] Introduction The biological diversity in a very significant degree depends on insect species diversi- ty, as insects is one of the richest in species class of living organisms. Among them hymenopterous insects, and especially parasitic Hymenoptera occupy one of the first places. For instance, according to the modern data, there are more than 6000 known species of these insects occurring in Finland (Koponen et al. 1995). As a result, its fauna is not satisfactorily studied. This group is characterized by an exceptional species diversity, surpassing other groups of insects. Taxonomy of the family Ichneumonidae is for the present day poorly developed in comparison with other groups of insects (e.g. Lepidoptera or Coleopte- ra). Occupying the highest level in food chains, ichneumon-flies thus represent one of the vulnerable groups of organisms. The subject of my research is the fauna of Orthocentrinae, one of the least-studied subfamilies of ichneumon wasps. For a long time the species composition of this group and its position within the family Ichneumonidae were obscure. It is necessary to note that this group of ichneumon-flies is of significant theoretical interest, as it occupies a key position for the solving of some difficult questions in Ichneumonidae phylogeny. Orthocentrines are small, seldom medium-sized parasitic wasps. The average size of its body is about 3-5 mm. The diversity of morphological structure of Orthocentri- nae is very significant. -

Russian researchers from Petrozavodsk (Karelian Research Centre) , St Peters- burg (Komarov Botanical Institute) and Moscow (Moscow State University) were involved in the studies. The goal of the researches was to study the biolgical value of the prevailing forest fragments. An index of the value of the forest fragments was compiled. The index includes the amount and quality and suc- cession of the decaying wood in the sites. The groups studied were Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera and ap- hyllophoraceous fungi. Coleoptera species were were most numerous in Tapionaho, where there were over 200 spedies found of the total number of 282 found in the studies. -

Diptera Associated with Fungi in the Czech Republic and Slovakia

Jan Ševčík A b s t r a c t: This work summarizes data on 188 species of Diptera belonging to 26 families reared by the author from 189 species of macrofungi and myxomycetes collected in the Czech and Slovak Republics in the years 1998 – 2006. Most species recorded belong to the family Mycetophilidae (84 species), followed by the families Phoridae (16 spp.), Drosophilidae (12 spp.), Cecidomyiidae (11 spp.), Bolitophilidae (9 spp.), Muscidae (8 spp.) and Platypezidae (8 spp.). The other families were represented by less than 5 species. For each species a list of hitherto known fungus hosts in the Czech and Slovak Republic is given, including the previous literature records. A systematic list of host fungi with associated insect species is also provided. A new species of Phoridae, Megaselia sevciki Disney sp. n., reared from the fungus Bovista pusilla, is described. First record of host fungus is given for Discobola parvispinula (Alexander, 1947), Mycetophila morosa Winnertz, 1863 and Trichonta icenica Edwards, 1925. Two species of Mycetophilidae, Mycetophila estonica Kurina, 1992 and Exechia lundstroemi Landrock, 1923, are for the first time recorded from the Czech Republic and two species, Allodia (B.) czernyi (Landrock, 1912) and Exechia repanda Johannsen, 1912, from Slovakia. -

The parasitoid family Ichneumonidae is the largest family in the order Hymenoptera. This chapter provides a checklist of 1,160 ichneumonid species (299 genera) known from the Canadian Prairies Ecozone. The list is primarily drawn from literature records and also includes 35 newly recorded species from the ecozone. The number of species on the list is a vast underestimate of the number of ichneumonid species present, as many genera lack revisions and few biodiversity surveys have been conducted. Most species recorded from this ecozone are only known from the Nearctic region, but are not restricted to the Prairies Ecozone. Little is known about the ecology, habitat requirements, or host associations of most ichneumonid species, with 43% of the species on the checklist lacking any host records. Future research should include revisions of the many genera that have not been studied in the Nearctic region, as well as biodiversity surveys in prairie habitats, rearing of potential host species, and the creation of user-friendly identification resources. Le présent chapitre dresse la liste des 1 160 espèces de cette famille, réparties en 299 genres, présentes dans l’écozone des prairies. Cette liste, établie principalement à partir de sources documentaires, fait état de 35 nouvelles mentions provenant de l’écozone. -
