Box 2750 Honolulu, Hawaii 96840-0001 Prepared By: Richard Brock, Ph.D. Environmental Assessment, LLC 1232 Lunalilo Home Road Honolulu, Hawaii 96825 EA,LLC Report No. 2017-07 March 2017 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The development of an electrical generating facility at Campbell Industrial Park (CIP) Barbers Point was the impetus to initiate a quarterly environmental monitoring program to follow changes, if any, in coral reef fish communities in the Barbers Point - Kahe Point area. This document is the ninth annual report for this effort covering the period from December 2007 through December 2016 with a focus on the surveys completed in 2016. On a quarterly basis, this study monitors the status of coral reef fish communities at sixteen permanently marked sites offshore of Barbers Point on the southeast to Nanakuli Beach Park about 7.9 km to the northwest. These 16 monitoring stations are in waters from 5 to 12 m in depth and thus are subject to impact from high surf events. Survey work in 2016 was hampered by inclement weather. The 2016 surveys were completed on 15 April (1st quarter), 5 July (2nd quarter) and 18 August (3rd quarter). The first and fourth quarter work could not be completed in a timely fashion due to poor weather conditions due to the protracted El Nino event that created a record number of major storms (15 in all) and generating prolonged high surf events as they passed by the Hawaiian Islands in 2015. -

BELL 3 ABSTRACT: Naso caesius, a new unicornfish (Perciformes: Acanthuridae: Nas inae) is described from specimens from the Marshall Islands, Mariana Island s, Hawaiian Islands, and Pitcairn Group. Its occurrence in the Society Island s, New Caledonia, Fiji, and the Coral Sea is confirmed by underwater pho tographs. It is very similar to and has been confus ed with Naso hexacanthus, differing in having sma11er bladelike caudal spines that do not become sharply pointed and antrorse as on large male N. hexacanthus, a pale instead of black tongue, entirel y pale lower-limb gill rakers (base of rakers blackish in N. hexacanthus), and in life color. It is bluish gray overa11 (not yellowish ventra11y as on N. hexacanthus) and lacks the black borders on the opercle and preopercle and the white lower lip usua11 y seen on N. hexacanthus;one common color phase, which can be rapidly assumed, has vertically elongate spots on the bod y'that vary from paler to darker than the ground color. Naso thorpei Smith , kno wn from one 314-mm specimen from Durban, South Africa, is questionably distinct from N. hexacanthus. Naso tapeinosoma (Bleeker) and N. vomer (Klunzinger) are probable junior synonyms of N. hexacanthus. Abstract Knowledge of evolutionary relationships or phylogeny allows for effective predictions about the unstudied characteristics of species. These include the presence and biological activity of an organism’s venoms. To date, most venom bioprospecting has focused on snakes, resulting in six stroke and cancer treatment drugs that are nearing U.S. Food and Drug Administration review. Fishes, however, with thousands of venoms, represent an untapped resource of natural products. The first step in- volved in the efficient bioprospecting of these compounds is a phylogeny of venomous fishes. Here, we show the results of such an analysis and provide the first explicit suborder-level phylogeny for spiny-rayed fishes. The results, based on ;1.1 million aligned base pairs, suggest that, in contrast to previous estimates of 200 venomous fishes, .1,200 fishes in 12 clades should be presumed venomous. -

Anilo- cra prionuri was previously reported only from off the Pacific coast of central Hon- shu, Japan, but the present collection extends the geographical distribution range of the species from central Honshu southwest to the northern Ryukyu Islands and repre- sents its first record from the East China Sea. The fish had a wound with heavily dam- aged epidermis at the attachment site of A. prionuri. It was a rare parasite of P. scal- prum at the collection site. Ecological Relationships in Hawaiian and Johnston Island Acanthuridae (Surgeonfishes)1 Robert S. JONES Division of Biosciences and Marine Studies, University of Guam ABSTRACT Four genera and twenty species of the family Acanthuridae from Hawaii and Johnston Island are investigated for factors that might provide potential ecological separation of the species. The factors investigated a re habitat preference, foraging methods, food eaten, and possible morphological specializations for feeding. On the basis of habitat preference the acanthurids may be divided into mid-water, sand patch, subsurge reef, and seaward reef or surge zone dwellers. These habitats are defined in terms of acanthurid species .composition and general physiography. With regard to foraging methods and food eaten, the Acanthuridae comprise zooplankton feeders, grazers, and browsers. The zooplankton feeders actively pursue and capture copepods, crustacean larvae, and the pelagic eggs of numerous marine animals. Grazers feed predominate ly on a calcareous substratum rich in diatoms and detritus. The browsers feed on multicellular benthic algae of two basic types based on the size and morphology of the a lgae. At the species level several modifications in the morphology of the digestive tract are found which suggest that many of these fishes are able to handle their food in a different manner from other species. INTRODUCTION One of the largest groups of reef fishes in terms of species and biomass in the Hawaiian and Johnston Island marine environments is the family Acanthuri dae. For the most part the species of this family are wide-spread and frequently the most abundant of the diurnally active fishes in the littoral waters of these localities.
