“Some Love of England”: Virginia Woolf and English “SOME LOVE OF ENGLAND”: VIRGINIA WOOLF AND ENGLISH NATIONAL CULTURE by COLLEEN DONOVAN Under the Direction of Adam Parkes ABSTRACT I examine Woolf’s complicated relationship with England through the lens of linguistic, postcolonial, gender, and nation theory. I argue that Woolf regarded the nation as created by its subjects’ active participation in and upholding of its defining rituals, traditions, symbols, and institutions, as later nation theorists would argue. Throughout her writing career, Woolf evaluated the meaning of membership in the “imagined community” of England, and sought to locate a position for Englishwomen within a national culture that often excluded them. The seeming conflict between Woolf’s appraisal of her Englishness as a “stigma” and admission that “some love of England” still remains typifies the reasons that she frequently criticized what she saw as an oppressive patriarchal discourse that has dominated English national culture and her response to this discourse in attempting to construct a more inclusive national culture. For example, in such novels as Orlando and Between the Acts, Woolf parodies writing styles associated with various eras of English history in order to demonstrate how literary texts are used to offer English readers models of national identity that are not only gendered but historically contingent, as well. By spotlighting the fictional nature of these models, Woolf looks hopefully to the mutability of English national identity. In other chapters, I examine Woolf’s responses to the two world wars, which led her to challenge more anxiously and to articulate her sense of Englishness in the volatile climate of the first half of the twentieth century. These wars constituted for her the most significant threats to England’s survival, causing her to criticize the patriotic discourses used to justify them and the oppressive, violent practices of England’s patriarchal culture that generate a nation prone to war. More broadly, I consider Woolf’s English national consciousness in a context of Modernism as a whole and suggest that national identity plays a crucial, although often overlooked or downplayed, role in the philosophies of Modernism more generally, a literary movement traditionally regarded as an "international" or even "supra- national" one that attempted to transcend national boundaries and allegiances. Joyce’s Stephen Dedalus may have wanted to "fly by those nets" of "nationality, language, [and] religion," but no writer can escape his or her nationality. He or she can, however, rewrite it, and thus contribute to a new discourse of nationalism. She notes the prevalence of Adolf Hitler’s and Winston Churchill’s “boom[ing]” speeches in the newspapers, the persistent reports of sunken ships with “no survivors,” rising prices for civilians, and a “Black Out”–a precaution against air raids–that “is far

    Nights Underground in Darkest London: The Blitz, 1940–1941 Geoffrey Field Purchase College, SUNY After the tragic events of September 11, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani at once saw parallels in the London Blitz, the German air campaign launched against the British capital between September 1940 and May 1941. In the early press con- ferences at Ground Zero he repeatedly compared the bravery and resourceful- ness of New Yorkers and Londoners, their heightened sense of community forged by danger, and the surge of patriotism as a town and its population came to symbolize a nation embattled. His words had immediate resonance, despite vast differences between the two situations. One reason for the Mayor’s turn of mind was explicit: he happened at that moment to be reading John Lukacs’ Five Days in London, although the book examines the British Cabinet’s response to the German invasion of France some months before bombing of the city got un- derway. Without doubt Tony Blair’s outspoken support for the United States and his swift (and solitary) endorsement of joint military action also reinforced this mental coupling of London and New York. But the historical parallel, however imperfect, seemed to have deeper appeal. Soon after George W. Bush was telling visitors of his admiration for Winston Churchill, his speeches began to emulate Churchillian cadences, Karl Rove hung a poster of Churchill in the Old Execu- tive Office Building, and the Oval Office sported a bronze bust of the Prime Min- ister, loaned by British government.1 Clearly Churchill, a leader locked in conflict with a fascist and a fanatic, was the man for this season, someone whom all political parties could invoke and quote, someone who endured and won in the end.

It is more than pious tribute to the great scholar whom we commemorate today that makes me begin with Ernest Gellner. For Gellner’s influential thinking on nationalism, and specifically of its modernity, is central to the question I wish to consider, the relation between nation and empire, and between imperial and national identity. For Gellner, as for many other commentators, nation and empire were and are antithetical. The great empires of the past belonged to the species of the ‘agro-literate’ society, whose central fact is that ‘almost everything in it militates against the definition of political units in terms of cultural bound- aries’ (Gellner 1983: 11; see also Gellner 1998: 14–24). Power and culture go their separate ways. The political form of empire encloses a vastly differ- entiated and internally hierarchical society in which the cosmopolitan culture of the rulers differs sharply from the myriad local cultures of the subordinate strata. Modern empires, such as the Soviet empire, continue this pattern of disjuncture between the dominant culture of the elites and the national or ethnic cultures of the constituent parts. Nationalism, argues Gellner, closes the gap. It insists that the only legitimate political unit is one in which rulers and ruled share the same culture. Its ideal is one state, one culture. Or, to put it another way, its ideal is the national or the ‘nation-state’, since it conceives of the nation essentially in terms of a shared culture linking all members.

    1 Introduction Michael Hattaway What does it mean to speak of ‘the English Renaissance’? Within the parts of this volume, defining historical contexts and perspectives, the next offering readings of particular texts along with accounts of genres and modes, and the last presenting engagements with a number of critical issues and debates, we approach the question in a variety of ways. The word ‘Renaissance’ designates ‘rebirth’, a metaphor applied, from its begin- nings, to a cultural vision that originated in Italy. For the nineteenth and twentieth centuries this was projected in a magnificent synthesis by Jacob Burckhardt, The Civ- ilization of the Renaissance in Italy (1860). Burckhardt retrospectively laid out a master proposal to revive the art and learning of the classical world, to emulate the grandeur of ancient cities, to stimulate science and geographical discovery, and to produce art and literature that imitated antique models, an undertaking which was dedicated as much to the profane as to the spiritual. Rival city states of Italy required monuments to enhance their fame, and thus ensured patronage for the writers and artists who duly bequeathed to posterity the texts and great architectural and visual exemplars with which we are all familiar. Burckhardt’s categories, which rest upon notions of ‘genius’, ‘individuality’ and secularization, have percolated into all too many derivative hand- books for the period: they may not, however, fit the English experience. England did enjoy a phenomenal energizing of literature: this is an age that, tra- ditionally, has at its centre, Spenser and Sidney, Marlowe and Nashe, Shakespeare, and Jonson. Ben Jonson, exceptionally, did publish his ‘works’ in a manner befitting an author of the Renaissance, although some of the dramatic genres he used have medieval origins.
