Syllabus for English 200: Introduction to Literature Section 001 Instructor: Billy Longino Semester: Spring 2015 email: [email protected] Location: Ferguson 181 Office: LAN 328 Time: MWF 10:00 – 10:50 Office Hours: M/W/F 9:00 – 10:00; Tues 1:30 – 3:30; or by appointment Course Description English 200: Introduction to Literature is an introductory level literature course designed with the goal to aid students, who may not be familiar or versed in the various genres of literature, in acquiring the skills necessary to engage, understand, critically analyze, and (hopefully!) enjoy the literary genres of the shorty story, poetry, the novel, drama, and the graphic novel. As they read a range of works belonging to these genres, students will explore the basic concepts of literary technique, narrative, poetic, and dramatic structures and innovations, and begin to engage with the more advanced cognitive aspects of literature. In addition to these theoretical skills, students will also read below the surface of the texts in this class for their historical, ethical, psychological, social, and philosophical value, developing insight in how literature gives us a window into both the experiences of others and wider appreciation for the human condition. In addition, through assignments in class (quizzes, exams, essays, and discussions) students will learn how to intelligently respond to the sometimes complicated concepts found in works of literature. The goal here is for students to be able to take skills of critical thought beyond engagement with literature only into their wider interactions with an increasingly complicated world, which of course will continue to be reflected in the human output of literary works. -

Animal Farm by George Orwell: A Text Guide Name: Class: Teacher: George Orwell Born Eric Arthur Blair, George Orwell was born in India on 25th June 1903. His father was an official in the Indian Civil Service at the time of the British Empire, but once the family returned to England Orwell became deeply aware of how poor his family was – a factor which would be hugely influential in his later writing. He obtained a scholarship to Eton (one of the finest schools in the country), an experience which shaped his way of thinking. He often felt aware of his poverty there, but also praised the way Eton encouraged individuality. In 1922, he decided to join the Indian Imperial Police rather than take the conventional path to Oxford or Cambridge Universities, demonstrating that he was preferred to think outside of the box and do the unexpected. After five years, he quite the Imperial Police, mainly because he was unhappy about the way Britain ruled in India. Some people feel that the disgust and guilt he felt whilst in the police influenced his decision to go to Paris in 1927, Here, he worked in a series of poorly paid jobs. He was fascinated by those worst off in society and wrote about them in his first major book: Down and Out In Paris & London. Orwell was a socialist, which contradicted his patriotic ideas about England. Also, as he got older he became anti-Communist, which seems to contradict his socialist views (you will read more about Communism later). When World War II broke out, he tried to enlist but was rejected thanks to his ill-health. -

American Gods, Myths, and Roadside Attractions
EN 3553.01 Major Authors Spring 2018 MWF 10:00-10:50 Mr. Price American Gods and American Roadside Attractions In the popular novel American Gods, Neil Gaiman offers the premise that we “create the gods.” He takes the notion from psychologist Carl Gustav Jung that by imagining gods, by bringing them into our culture, we fully create them. They take on an existence beyond that of our imagination. They become real. As a writer of fantasy, Gaiman can make that “becoming real” quite literal, as in the novel his gods wander through the American landscape. For us – and therefore as a literary metaphor – they become “real” in another sense. There are the gods we worship, such as the Odin brought to American shores by Leif Erickson and his contemporaries. There are things we worship, such as the television set that has been the altar and shrine of American households. There is the automobile and the highway. For this class I want to begin with Gaiman’s depiction of “the gods,” looking a bit at the novel’s central plot, but particularly at his incorporation of “forgotten gods,” figures of folklore, and such elements as flavor American culture. I plan to also look at a couple example American myths, big ones. I am including a couple pieces on the “frontier” and “melting pot” myths: Willa Cather’s My Antonia and a John Ford film, “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.” For America’s favorite twentieth century myth, “the business of America is business” (quote attributed to Calvin Coolidge), we will look at Sinclair Lewis’s Babbitt. -

Fantastic vision, great story, some slight flaws.By LiamI loved this book. A great read, engaging and fascinating, this book exemplifies superb science fiction writing. The concepts of the story and the realism (for the most part) of the science are huge strong points for the book. Of the four parts I found the first two much stronger and more compelling than the last two. The story took a different approach in the latter half ndash; perhaps intentionally ndash; however it did feel as though there was slightly less effort put into the cohesion and realism of the second half. There were aspects that were quite engaging and strong, but not like the first half. Additionally, for such a scientifically detailed and strong book, the quick ending seemed not only rushed but questionable scientifically. The ending and in fact the entire fourth part had a slight taste of being an afterthought, in some ways I would have preferred a more fleshed out part three and left it with a small epilogue on the end.However, I am only being this critical of the book because I truly loved it and think it is one of the best stories I've heard seen or read, period. -

Swartz The Hugo Awards originally were called the Science Fiction Achievement Awards and first were given out at Philcon II, the World Science Fiction Con- vention of 1953, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The second oldest--and most prestigious--awards in the field, they quickly were nicknamed the Hugos (officially since 1958), in honor of Hugo Gernsback (1884 -1967), founder of Amazing Stories, the first professional magazine devoted entirely to science fiction. No awards were given in 1954 at the World Science Fiction Con in San Francisco, but they were restored in 1955 at the Clevention (in Cleveland) and included six categories: novel, novelette, short story, magazine, artist, and fan magazine. -

It develops a framework for tracing the relationships between real world science and technology and innovation and science fiction/speculative fiction involving processes of transformation, central to which are questions of influence, persuasion, and desire. This is contrasted with the more commonplace assumption of direct linear transmission, SF providing the inventive seed for innovation– instances of which are the exception rather than the rule. The model of influence is developed through an investigation of the nature and evolution of genre, the various effects/appeals of different forms of expression, and the ways in which SF may be appropriated by its various audiences. This is undertaken (i) via an inter- disciplinary survey of work on SF, and a consideration the historical construction of genre and its on-going importance, (ii) through the development of a prototype database exploring transformational paths, and via more elaborated loops extracted from the database, and (iii) via experiments with the development of a web crawl tool, to understand at a different scale, using tools of digital humanities, how fictional ideas travel. -
