The Investiture Contest and the Rise of Herod Plays in the Twelfth Century John Marlin Since the publication of O. B. Hardison’s Christian Rite and Christian Drama in the Middle Ages,1 E. K. Chambers’s and Karl Young’s evolutionary models for liturgical drama’s development2 have been discarded. Yet the question remains of accounting for what Rosemary Woolf calls its “zig-zag” development,3 its apogee being the twelfth century. The growth and decline of Christmas drama is particularly intriguing, as most of Young’s samples of the simple shepherd plays, the Officium Pastores, come from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, while the earliest Christmas play he documents, from an eleventh-century Freising Cathedral manuscript, is a complete play about Herod and the Magi, the Officium Stellae. -
The Transformations of a Buddhist Symbol of Evil
ABSTRACT MALLEABLE MāRA: THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF A BUDDHIST SYMBOL OF EVIL by Michael David Nichols Despite its importance to the legend of the Buddha’s enlightenment and numerous Buddhist texts, a longitudinal, diachronic analysis of the symbol of Māra has never been done. This thesis aims to fill that gap by tracing the Evil One’s development in three spheres. Chapter one deals with Māra in the Nikāya texts, in which the deity is portrayed as a malign being diametrically opposed to the Buddha and his teachings. Chapter two discusses how that representation changes to ambivalence in certain Mahāyāna sūtras due to increased emphasis on the philosophical concepts of emptiness and non-duality. Finally, chapter three charts the results of a collision between the two differing representations of Māra in Southeast Asia. The concludes that the figure of Māra is malleable and reflects changes in doctrinal and sociological situations. As regards the executive power he can exercise personally or through another person. The Rise and Domestication of Historical Sociology
The Rise and Domestication of" Historical Sociology Craig Calhoun Historical sociology is not really new, though it has enjoyed a certain vogue in the last twenty years. In fact, historical research and scholarship (including comparative history) was central to the work of many of the founders and forerunners of sociology-most notably Max Weber but also in varying degrees Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Alexis de Tocqueville among others. It was practiced with distinction more recently by sociologists as disparate as George Homans, Robert Merton, Robert Bellah, Seymour Martin Lipset, Charles Tilly, J. A. Banks, Shmuel Eisenstadt, Reinhard Bendix, Barrington Moore, and Neil Smelser. Why then, should historical sociology have seemed both new and controversial in the 1970s and early 1980s? The answer lies less in the work of historical sociologists themselves than in the orthodoxies of mainstream, especially American, sociology of the time. Historical sociologists picked one battle for themselves: they mounted an attack on modernization theory, challenging its unilinear developmental ten- dencies, its problematic histori<:al generalizations and the dominance (at least in much of sociology) of culture and psycllology over political economy. In this attack, the new generation of historical sociologists challenged the most influential of their immediate forebears (and sometimes helped to create the illusion that historical sociology was the novel invention of the younger gener- ation). The other major battle was thrust upon historical sociologists when many leaders of the dominant quantitative, scientistic branch of the discipline dismissed their work as dangerously "idiographic," excessively political, and in any case somehow not quite 'real' sociology. Historical sociology has borne the marks of both battles, and in some sense, like an army always getting ready to fight the last war, it remains unnecessarily preoccupied with them. -
Sede Vacante Patronage Is Exercised
SECTION 2, VACANCIES IN SUFFRAGAN SEES AND OTHER ECCLESIASTICAL OFFICES MEASURE 2010 (APPOINTMENTS BY THE CROWN DURING CERTAIN VACANCIES) CROWN BENEFICES (PARISH REPRESENTATIVES) MEASURE 2010 Section 2 of the Vacancies in Suffragan Sees and Other Ecclesiastical Offices Measure 2010 (“the Vacancies Measure”) and the whole of the Crown Benefices (Parish Representatives) Measure 2010 (“the Parish Representatives Measure”) come into force on 1st January 2011. The former makes changes to the way in which the Crown’s sede vacante patronage is exercised. That latter provides for PCCs of Crown benefices to appoint parish representatives whose approval must be sought before the Crown may present a priest for institution. Section 2, Vacancies in Suffragan Sees and Other Ecclesiastical Offices Measure – statutory delegation of the Crown’s sede vacante patronage 1. Diocesan bishops, in right of their sees, exercise various types of patronage. This includes rights of patronage in respect of certain parochial benefices. It also includes the right to appoint to certain residentiary canonries and the appointment of archdeacons. 2. When a diocesan see is vacant The Queen is guardian and custodian of the temporalities of the see. The temporalities of a see include the rights of patronage that belong to the see. (They formerly also included episcopal estates but these are now vested in the Church Commissioners and no longer form part of the temporalities; but rights of patronage still do.) 3. Therefore, when a diocesan see is vacant, the rights of patronage belonging to that see are exercisable by Her Majesty as guardian of the temporalities. That means that in the event of an ecclesiastical office in respect of which the bishop has the right of patronage being vacant during a vacancy in see, the Crown presents to that vacant office.1 This is known as the Crown’s sede vacante patronage. -

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: CHARLES TILLY MARCH 2008 SUMMARY. After teaching at Delaware, Harvard, Toronto, Michigan, and the New School for Social Research as well as holding many shorter term research and teaching appointments in Europe and North America, Charles Tilly is now Joseph L. Buttenwieser Professor of Social Science, Columbia University. His work focuses on large-scale social change and its relationship to contentious politics, especially in Europe since 1500. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Ordre des Palmes Académiques, he has received numerous international prizes and honorary degrees. Tilly has authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited more than 50 published books and monographs. He has also published between 600 and 700 scholarly articles, reviews, review-essays, comments, chapters in edited collections, and prefaces not counting reprints, translations, and working papers.1 His most recently published books are Trust and Rule (Cambridge University Press, 2005), Popular Contention in Great Britain, 1758-1834 (Paradigm Publishers, 2005, revised paperback edition of 1995 book), Identities, Boundaries, and Social Ties (once again Paradigm Publishers, 2005),Why?
