At present the Holy See is planning an international conference in Rome on nuclear disarmament. The idea to join the humanitarian initiative on the abolition of nuclear weapons which has been signed by 157 states in the meantime is regarded with much sympathy. “Europe’s vocation to promote peace in the world” On 14 June 2016, the COMECE bishops published a report on “Europe’s vocation to promote peace in the world” prepared together with JP Europe on the occasion of the planned global EU strategy on foreign and security policy. The text appears on the JP Website under the heading “Aktuell” in the German and the English language. German-Polish exhibition on reconciliation The mobile version of the two main exhibitions in Berlin and Wrocław was shown in Leipzig during the Katholikentag and in the Polish Institute of National Remembrance starting on 30 May. The members of the contact group of the German and Polish Bishops’ Conferences who were holding a meeting at the same time were present during the opening of the exhibition in Warsaw as well as the Polish Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. The exhibition was very well received. German-Polish exhibition during the Katholikentag in From 3 – 6 September the exhibition was presented at Huysburg on the Leipzig 2016 occasion of the diocesan pilgrimage. Later it was shown in Magdeburg (7-25 September) and in Pforzheim (26 September – 9 October). The exhibition is available for hire by the Maximilian Kolbe Foundation. European Workshop on dealing with the past burdened by violence in Auschwitz From 11 - 16 August the 7th European Workshop on dealing with the past burdened by violence was organised by the MKF in Oswiecim. Fortunately this time it was possible to win representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church to participate in the Workshop. The encounters and talks were very encouraging. European Workshop on dealing with the past of Bosnia- Herzegovina burdened by violence The 3rd Workshop on Bosnia took place from 16 – 24 Sep- tember and was characterized by considerable dynamics which was caused by a new programme item in Prijedor and by a small memorial ceremony held in Tomasica. During the Workshop a memorial plaque was placed near the mass grave in Tomasica. This action had been developed after experienc- es made in the past years and it was welcomed in December 2015 by all parties involved. Memorial plaque near the mass grave in Tomasica The reason for this activity was the complaint presented by the local Bosni- an community that the Serbian authorities did not give their permission to place this kind of plaque. Placing the memorial plaque in the presence of the representative of Reis-ul-Lema, Efendi Smahic, was perceived as a strong signal by the press. Workshop with German, Polish and French regular officers on deal- ing with trauma and violence in Oswiecim From 25 -29 October the fifth international Workshop with regular officers on dealing with trauma and violence took place in Oswiecim. Forum Menschenrechte The members of the plenary session of the Forum Menschenrechte informed themselves about the dimensions of racist violence in Germany by contribu- tions made by the Amadeo Antonio Foundation and by experience reports presented by the Initiative of Black People in Germany (ISL e.V.). It be- came obvious that the number and the intensity of attacks have increased considerably in the last years. During this year’s talk with Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier on 21 June 2016, the Forum explored, among other things, the necessity for a better visibility of foreign policy’s orientation towards the basic principles of human rights. The present refugee policy which further undermines the individual right of asylum was criticised. According to the Forum the current draft of the Nationaler Aktionsplan Wirtschaft und Menschenrechte (National Action Plan for Business and Human Rights) shows that human rights are not con- sistently implemented in practice. The Forum demanded to ask companies to keep their obligations in regard to human rights due diligence along the supply chain. Finally the process of developing “Leitlinien Krisenengagement und Friedensförderung” (Guidelines on crisis engagement and peace promo- tion) was addressed. In this context the Forum expressed its expectation that civil forms of crisis management should be given primacy over military forms. To this purpose the necessary instruments have to be improved. Religious freedom in Vietnam After the journey of the President of the German Bishops’ Conference, Cardinal Marx, to Vietnam a talk was held with Vietnamese members of parliament on 21 September 2016 with the assistance of the German Embassy and in close consultation with the local church. Professor Dr Gernot Syd- ow from the University of Münster was invited to the talk. Members of the National Assembly Committee on Culture and Education talked with him about the experiences Euro- Participants of the Work- pean states made with their legislation as far as religion is shops on the law on belief concerned. and religion A few issues of the draft of the law on belief and religion which shall be submitted to parliament in November 2016 were discussed. German sustainability strategy In 2002 a sustainability strategy for German politics was developed. Be- cause of the Agenda 2030 people realised that this sustainability strategy has to include more than just the ecological sustainability. For this reason on 31 May 2016, the Federal Chancellor published a draft updating of the German sustainability strategy. It shall indicate the direction for politics regarding all objectives of the agenda and it shall reflect Germany’s respon- sibility for ecological, economic and social sustainability not only for Germa- ny but also for the world. The deadline for the transmission of comments expired on 31 July 2016. With the assistance of Professor Wallacher (chair- man sector of development) and Dr Demele (chairman of the discussion group trade unions) Justice and Peace commented on the draft. SDG Video competition “Weltwunder? Geht doch!” (“World wonders? There you go!”) This was the headline of a SDG video competition opened by bishop Ackermann at the Katholikentag. The members of the jury and the competition are presented at the Website www.weltwunder.tv. The Website can be accessed at katholisch.de, at Youtube and Facebook. Less than 11 months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, East and West Germany – which as a result of the Sec- ond World War had endured 40 years of separation and confrontation – were now reunited. Even before the official reunification took place, Bauer, like many companies in West Germany, had been very keen to move into the former German Demo- cratic Republic (GDR) firstly in order to expand its markets and, secondly, to assist in the transition from a planned economy to a free market economy. Twenty years on, this Review looks at how Bauer went about this undertaking, returning once again to focus on the early days of the reunification process. The story is told not so much on the basis of documents and records, but rather through the voices of the man- agers responsible for running the busi- ness at the time. Most of them are still in senior management posts today, though some have retired. Witnesses on the Schrobenhausen side who were consulted in compiling the report in- cluded Chairman of the Management Board Thomas Bauer and Heinz Kalten - ecker, as well as Wolfgang Brunner, Alexander Hofer, Josef Goller and Ernst Stümpfle.

Genders and Sexualities in History Series Editors John Arnold King’s College University of Cambridge Cambridge, UK Sean Brady Birkbeck College University of London London, UK Joanna Bourke Birkbeck College University of London London, UK Palgrave Macmillan’s series, Genders and Sexualities in History, accom- modates and fosters new approaches to historical research in the felds of genders and sexualities. The series promotes world-class scholarship, which concentrates upon the interconnected themes of genders, sexuali- ties, religions/religiosity, civil society, politics and war. Historical studies of gender and sexuality have, until recently, been more or less disconnected felds. In recent years, historical analyses of genders and sexualities have synthesised, creating new departures in his- toriography. The additional connectedness of genders and sexualities with questions of religion, religiosity, development of civil societies, poli- tics and the contexts of war and confict is refective of the movements in scholarship away from narrow history of science and scientifc thought, and history of legal processes approaches, that have dominated these paradigms until recently. The series brings together scholarship from Contemporary, Modern, Early Modern, Medieval, Classical and Non- Western History. The series provides a diachronic forum for scholarship that incorporates new approaches to genders and sexualities in history. THE HOLOCAUST AND THE SEARCH FOR FORGIVENESS An Invitation to the Society of jesus? Pope John Paul II has led the Church into a new era in its relationship with the Jewish Community. Progress rests on painstaking efforts to uncover the truth, identify failures where they exist, and humbly seek forgiveness. Recent scholarship presents a complex picture in Europe both before and immediately after the Second World War, both in the local churches and at the Vatican. Such can dor prompts a question: Should the Society of Jesus, serving its own role in the universal Church, review its own history during this dark period, and where neces sary, join in the Churclis search for forgiveness? ear the beginning of the new millennium, Pope John N Paul II made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and prayed at Judaism's most holy site, the Western Wall of Herod's Tem ple.

  • «The Time for Conversion Is Now...»
World peace cannot be safeguarded without the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences making of creative efforts proportionate to the of the European Community dangers which threaten it. The contribution which an organized and living Europe can bring to civilization is indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations. In taking upon herself for more than 20 years the role of champion of a united Europe, France- has always had as her essential aim the service of peace. A united Europe was not achieved and we had war. Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which irst create a de facto solidarity. The coming together of the nations of Europe - requires the elimination of the age-old opposition of France and Germany. Any action taken must in the irst place concern these two countries. With this aim in view, the French Government proposes that action be taken immediately on one limited but decisive point. It proposes that Franco-German produc tion of coal and steel as a whole be placed under a common High Authority, within the framework of an organization open to the participation of the other countries of Europe. The pooling of coal and steel production should immediately provide for the setting up of common foundations for economic deve lopment as a irst step in the federation of Europe, and will change the destinies of those regions which have long been devoted to the manufacture of munitions of war, of which they have been the most - constant victims.

  • Mattheiser Brief Weihnachten 2012

  • Baroque Images of the Saints, Their Visions and Emotions As Reflected by Popular Discourses Around 1970
Baroque images of the saints, their visions and emotions as reflected by popular discourses around 1970 Ivan Gerát This article attempts to identify and describe some of the concepts that have been used in popular discourse in relation to Baroque art, architecture and visual culture on both sides of the Iron Curtain. The concepts to be studied are associated with visual cults of particular saints, and especially with the emotional loading of such images. Can we find any significant differences between the various ways in which these images were conceptualised and medialised to a wider public in the eastern and western parts of a divided Europe? The search for an answer to this question will be divided into two phases. The first part of the article is devoted to one of the most important examples of popular art history of our time – the famous BBC television documentary series, Civilisation: A Personal View, by Kenneth Clark, and the accompanying book of the same name.1 This article attempts to reconstruct the conceptual framework used by the author in his presentation of the Baroque cult of saints in the visual arts. This reconstruction will provide a kind of benchmark against which less illustrious examples of such a popularisation effort can be measured. The latter task will be carried out in the second part of the paper, in a short case study of how the Baroque cult of St Elizabeth of Thuringia was understood and popularised on either side of the Iron Curtain. The examples to be studied are from the cities of Vienna and Bratislava,

  • Huysburgbrief Nr. 7, Weihnachten 2006
