    A FEW WORDS ON HOW TO PROMOTE MARIACHI SOL DE MEXICO AT PAC’S by Jose Delgado I have been managing the mariachi genre in the U.S. for 20 years. I began as a tour manager for Linda Ronstadt’s CANCIONES DE MI PADRE tour. The show was a unique blend of Mexican music and mariachi concert. Following that I managed Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano for over fifteen years and with Mr. Cano refocused the company to be a concert mariachi that toured playing in performing art centers as well as concert halls as diverse as Chicago Symphony Hall, Davies Symphony Hall, Centennial Hall and Teatro de Gollado in Guadalajara. Currently, I am the manager of the internationally recognized, Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez. Based on these expansive experiences in the American mariachi field, I have discovered a number of ways to engage and enhance local efforts to promote Sol de Mexico in performing arts centers wherever they might be presented. First and foremost Sol de Mexico should be promoted to a mainstream audience as World Music. This will capture music aficionados and mainstream middle class Mexican-Americans as well as other segments of the local Latino community. The Mexican American audience will view this as an acceptance and respect for their cultural tradition and an acknowledgement of the genre as an art form, which it is. A PAC that has an established history in their local community and is already branded but has never presented anything Latino in their season will have a different kind of a challenge than a PAC that is just opening their doors.

Obregon, Professor Coordinator, Mexican Studies in Music School of Music The University of Arizona I Mariachi Origins: Where does the word "Mariachi" come from? Theory I: Thomas Stanford published the article entitled "The Mexican Son" in 1969. In his article Thomas put forth the following theory. "In Mexico the Mariachi repertory is dominated by love songs to women. Since women are held in high regard (at times compared to the Virgin Mary) it can be said that the combination of the name Maria (Mar}') and the Nahuatl language word suffix "chi" gives the following Maria + Chi - Mariachi. Thus the group's name." In resent years Thomas Stanford has recanted his theory. (This material is paraphrased from Thomas Stanford's article). Theory II: The word Mariachi comes from the French word for Marriage or "Mariage". This is by far the most popular theory. But, as with theory #1 it is also false. The French invasion of Mexico in the last half of the 1 800 ' s was not a popular event. The indigenous people they encountered in Mexico despised the French. It is this writer's belief that when French soldiers encountered Mexican weddings, Mariachi groups were performing at the ceremonies and or receptions. The soldiers would ask, " what are those groups?" and they would be told that the groups were "Mariachis". The French soldiers assumed that the word was taken from the word "Mariage". This theory is also false. Welcome Information for Teachers and Parents Our goal is to offer high quality performances for young people in a safe and comfortable setting. Please help us by following the below guidelines. Please arrive early. You should arrive at the theatre 30 minutes prior to the noted start time. Allow for travel time, parking, being seated and bathroom visits. It is important that we begin our performances on time so that all schools can meet their lunch and/or dismissal times. Be sure to check the location of the performance when making your bus reservations. Performances take place in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall or Bowker Auditorium in Stockbridge Hall. Please see the map at the end of this guide for driving and drop-off instructions. Upon arrival your group will be greeted by an usher either at your bus or in the lobby. We do not issue individual tickets for performances. Your usher will direct your group to their reserved seats. Both theaters are accessible for Mobility Impaired members. An infrared listening system is available in both theaters. Access parking is available adjacent to the theaters. An Access permit should be clearly visible in the parked vehicle.
