Amcham Azerbaijan Congratulates HE Ilham Aliyev with Victory! A Word From Executive Director of AmCham Issue 30 Dear members, Welcome to the 30th edition of IMPACT Azerbaijan magazine, Credits dedicated to the "100th anniversary of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic". AmCham Executive Director: This year is remarkable for Azerbaijan and Azerbaijanis all Natavan Mammadova over the world. We celebrate the centenary of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) – the first democratic republic Editor: among Turkic and Muslim world. This May we commemorate his 95th anniversary! ILHAM ALIYEV with Victory! confidence in me, I would remain true to the policy of great leader Heydar Aliyev and would continue this policy. I am proud that the people believed me, supported me, and I, in turn, kept my word. In the past 15 years, comprehensive development has been ensured in Azerbaijan. The main condition here is that we are on the path of the great leader. The path he has chosen is the only correct one, and the history of Azerbaijan’s independence clearly demonstrates that. Over the past 15 years, we have made great strides along this way. The Azerbaijani people have lived in the conditions of security and stability. Over these 15 years, very dangerous processes took place in different regions of the world, in our region, in Europe: bloody clashes, wars, civil wars, coups d’etat. In other words, the last 15 years have been very tense in terms of security. Our people have lived in Azerbaijan in the conditions of security. We have eliminated all internal risks, were able to protect, are protecting and I am sure will continue to protect ourselves from external risks. Over these 15 years, the Azerbaijani people have lived in the conditions of stability. And this is the main precondition for our development. We see that when stability is disrupted, there can be no talk of development. When stability is undermined, outside intervention takes place, countries become uncontrollable, fraternal blood is shed, and the future of countries is called into question. The Azerbaijani people and our policies are the guarantors of stability in Azerbaijan. Therefore, the unity of the people and the government is the key precondition for our success. Azerbaijan today is known as a place of stability, an island of stability on a global scale, and this is our great achievement.     THE SOUTH CAUCASUS: WHERE THE US AND TURKEY SUCCEEDED TOGETHER As Americans and Turks discuss the ups and downs in their relationship, the strategically important South Caucasus is one area, where, working together, Turkey and the United States have helped bring about historic changes. More can be done to realize the region’s promise should the US and Turkey deepen their partnership with Azerbaijan and Georgia and build on the policies that have proven to be successful. This success has been based on forward-looking pragmatism and recognition of common interests. Acknowledging the achievements in the South Caucasus and learning from them can contribute to future progress in the US-Turkey relationship. Living up to its historic reputation, the South Caucasus, especially the Republic of Azerbaijan, is now literally at the crossroads of the East-West and North – South transport corridors. Additionally, the Caucasus has been included concurrently into a rather vague “European Neighborhood” and an even vaguer “Greater Middle East.” This represents both the world’s growing realization of the region’s importance and the lack of a clear immediate plan to address the rising significance of the Caucasus. CEU eTD Collection i Abstract In this thesis I focus on the late 19th century Azerbaijani history from the perspective of intellectual history. I mainly talk about the Enlightenment Movement with an emphasize on the intellectual debates on Religion and Secularism. Intellectual influences of the newly emerged intelligentsia with a special focus on cultural and intellectual life in Baku is also one of the main focal points of the presented work. My main argument in the thesis is that, without cultural and intellectual revival of late 19th century, which became possible with Baku oil boom, establishing the first Democratic Republic in Muslim world in 1918 wouldn’t be possible. I start with Baku Oil Boom of 1870s and continue with the establishment of the first Azerbaijani newspaper, “Akinchi” and then after examining the main intellectual debates, I conclude the thesis with the two most influential Azerbaijani intellectuals of the late 19th century.
