It is not concepts in themselves, but rather the actual human thought processes in respect thereof, that bring an objectified logical multiplicity into a subjective-logical unity through a correlative process, by means of concepts (in judgements). Although it would seem, on the one hand, that judgements presuppose concepts in a logical sense, it also appears, on the other hand, that the possibility of outlining a concept in terms of a definition implies that such a concept is the result of a judgement, and that it can still be converted back into a judgment. Viewed in terms of a correlative subjective-logical combination (synthesis) of an implicitly logical, objectified multiplicity, all judgements can be said to be analytical as well as synthetic, in a logical sense. It can also be added – almost tautologically – that only definable concepts can be defined. In other words, the relevant moment on which the focus falls, is the relationship between the concept (usually identified with the word that is being defined) and the conceptual object, on the one hand, and the definition, on the other. In this relationship, the modal, logical subject-object relation comes explicitly to the fore. In the South African context, “Afrikaner” – along with “Afrikanerhood” – is a politically loaded concept. In this regard, reference can be made to several prominent anthropological discourses (cf. Coertze 1973:61; Comaroff 2004:188; Erasmus 2003:1-5; Sharp 1981:22-23 and 2006:17-22) regarding the origin, composition, commonalities and establishment of Afrikaners within the broader South African context. On the basis of the above-mentioned, the author formulate a conceptual definition of the term “Afrikaner”, with a view to creating a point of departure (paradigm) for this study. For the purposes of this study, Afrikaners, although not homogeneous, are viewed as a group of persons, of primarily European descent, who possess an own language and share the same historical orientations, and who have a specific manner of self- representation with regard to the latter. The setting (the southernmost tip of Africa) in 2 which the Afrikaners originated was of especial importance; and their place of origin made a significant contribution to their identity. The more constant aspects of the concept, “Afrikaner”, include the characteristics of continuity and sameness, and the functional context thereof. The context of the concept “Afrikaner” is complex, and should not be restricted to a single point of departure; it includes the society (with all its different communities), the economy, politics and the relevant histories. It would thus be impossible to investigate the identity of Afrikaners as a consistent phenomenon, without also considering the social, economic and historical contexts. The dynamic aspects of the Afrikaners’ identity, refers fluidity to the experiencing of continuity by the members of the Afrikaner group, who are eager to identify themselves as Afrikaners. In other words, it is the subjective appropriation of the objective aspect of continuity. However, as in the case of the constant aspects of any other identity, the dynamic aspects also resides in the cognitive, psychological and emotional dimension of the society, as well as in the economy, politics and historic basis of the society. This approach does not resolve all our problems relating to the understanding of terms such as Afrikaner identity (ethnicity); but it does clarify the method that should be followed – firstly, by making us aware (and keeping us aware) of the fact that human beings can inevitably focus on only one aspect of a phenomenon at a time, and secondly, by reminding us that the relationships between various aspects of the phenomenon should also be taken into account. This study does not proceeds from the primordial assumption that the existence of “Afrikaners” and of an “Afrikaner culture” is an unproblematic, given factor; that is to say, that the existence of an Afrikaner ethnos with a clear, distinguishable identity and culture is an indisputable “fact”. However, it is only within a specific social, political, categorical, economic and gender-related context that the phenomenon of “Afrikaners” has any real meaning. The specific context in which the notion of an “Afrikaner” was formulated, is one in which “Afrikaners” comprise a minority group in South Africa, and in which the so-called “white” Afrikaners enjoyed all the political, economical and social powers and advantages in this country during the apartheid era (pre-1994), and also in 3 which – with the establishment of the New South Africa (post-1994) – they forfeited all these powers and advantages in the process of democratisation and normalisation. The process of restructuring and transformation of the broader South African society which has been in full force since 1994 has brought about radical changes for the Afrikaner. In an egalitarian post-apartheid milieu, coupled with the irresistible 21st- century forces of globalisation and market alignment, the essential attributes of the Afrikaner character are being engulfed for the sake of transformation, the New South Africa and nation-building; and the identity of the Afrikaner is being irrevocably redefined, and possibly even eroded. In terms of their numbers, Afrikaners have always been in the minority in their locality (South Africa).

Onderstepoort Journal of Veterinary Research, 75:141– 146 The prevalence of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi infections in the north-eastern Free State Province of South Africa was determined by examination of thin and thick Giemsa-stained blood smears, IFAT and PCR. No parasites were detected by microscopy from any blood samples collected at five study sites, Qwaqwa, Kestell, Harrismith, Vrede and Warden. Of the tested serum samples, 28/29 (96.5 %), 20/21 (95.2 %) and 42/42 (100 %) were positive by IFAT for T. equi infections in Harrismith, Kestell and Qwaqwa, respectively, and 5/29 (17.2 %), 13/21 (61.9 %) and 30/42 (71.4 %) were sero-positive for B. caballi infections in Harrismith, Kestell and Qwaqwa, respectively. All DNA samples from the study sites were negative for B. caballi infections by PCR, but five samples, two from each of Kestell and Warden and one from Vrede, were PCR positive for T.

    Economic Ascendance is/as Moral Rightness: The New Religious Political Right in Post-apartheid South Africa Part One: The Political Introduction If one were to go by the paucity of academic scholarship on the broad New Right in the post-apartheid South African context, one would not be remiss for thinking that the country is immune from this global phenomenon. I say broad because there is some academic scholarship that deals only with the existence of right wing organisations at the end of the apartheid era (du Toit 1991, Grobbelaar et al. 1989, Schönteich 2004, Schönteich and Boshoff 2003, van Rooyen 1994, Visser 2007, Welsh 1988, 1989,1995, Zille 1988). In this older context, this work focuses on a number of white Right organisations, including their ideas of nationalism, the role of Christianity in their ideologies, as well as their opposition to reform in South Africa, especially the significance of the idea of partition in these organisations. Helen Zille’s list, for example, includes the Herstigte Nasionale Party, Conservative Party, Afrikaner People’s Guard, South African Bureau of Racial Affairs (SABRA), Society of Orange Workers, Forum for the Future, Stallard Foundation, Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB), and the White Liberation Movement (BBB). There is also literature that deals with New Right ideology and its impact on South African education in the transition era by drawing on the broader literature on how the New Right was using education as a primary battleground globally (Fataar 1997, Kallaway 1989). Moreover, another narrow and newer literature exists that continues the focus on primarily extreme right organisations in South Africa that have found resonance in the global context of the rise of the so-called Alternative Right that rejects mainstream conservatism.

South Africa’s democratic transition, however, seemed to announce the death of the Afrikaans film. In 1998, the industry entered a nine-year slump during which not a single Afrikaans film was released on the commercial circuit. Yet, in 2007, the industry was revived and has been expanding rapidly ever since. This study is an attempt to explain the Afrikaans film industry’s recent success and also to consider some of its consequences. To do this, I situate the Afrikaans film industry within a larger – and equally flourishing – Afrikaans culture industry.

    THE JAMES BACKHOUSE LECTURE 2001 RECONCILING OPPOSITES: REFLECTIONS ON PEACEMAKING IN SOUTH AFRICA Hendrik W van der Merwe The James Backhouse Lectures The lectures were instituted by Australia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) on the its establishment of that Yearly Meeting in 1964. James Backhouse and his companion, George Washington Walker were English Friends who visited Australia from 1832 to 1838. They travelled widely, but spent most of their time in Tasmania. It was through their visit that Quaker Meetings were first established in Australia. Coming to Australia under a concern for the conditions of convicts, the two men had access to people with authority in the young colonies, and with influence in Britain, both in Parliament and in the social reform movement. In meticulous reports and personal letters, they made practical suggestions and urged legislative action on penal reform, on the rum trade, and on land rights and the treatment of Aborigines. James Backhouse was a general naturalist and a botanist. He made careful observations and published full accounts of what he saw, in addition to encouraging Friends in the colonies and following the deep concern that had brought him to Australia. Australian Friends hope that this series of Lectures will bring fresh insights into the Truth, and speak to the needs and aspirations of Australian Quakerism. This particular lecture was delivered in Melbourne on 8 January 2001, during the annual meeting of the Society.     Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate how the media have been reporting on land and agrarian reform developments in South Africa focusing on the post green paper (2011). Land and agrarian reform has been a sensitive field in the post-apartheid South Africa mainly because of the racial disparity on land ownership and the widening gap between the rich and poor. This study explores the literature available on land and agrarian reform, tracing the history of dispossession back to 1650 when Jan van Riebeck built a Fort in Cape Town in the shape of designated reserves. The 1894 Glen Grey Act, the 1913 Native Land Act and the 1936 Native Trust and Land Act as well as sundry other apartheid racist laws led to forced removals of native South African from their fertile lands into reserves, whilst the minority whites were acquiring vast tracks of farmland (Hendricks 2000, Baldwin 1975). This study further explores post apartheid government’s efforts to reverse the history of dispossession. The Department of Land Affairs introduced sundry policy interventions since 1994 which were supported by the Constitution of South Africa and in line with the dictates of the RDP program. These include the White Paper on Land Affairs (1997) policy framework, and several laws on land tenure, restitution and redistribution. South African democracy is more than two decades old, yet the land reform process is far from achieving the 30% target which had been set to be met in five years. More than three quarters of the productive agricultural land is still in the hands of the white minority, communal tenure system have not yet fully been addressed, farm labourers are still working under squalid, land restitution has been successful mainly on urban financial compensation claims and some rural land claims are still to be resolved.

Editor’s Summary The transition to a new constitutional dispensation necessitated that mechanisms be put in place to overcome reluctance to change and to deal with conduct regarded as inappropriate in the new society. The Constitution recognised this need. Legislation was enacted to provide the framework necessary to alleviate and overcome the friction resulting from change. It seeks to provide the standards society is to adhere to and to assist society to determine what standards of conduct are acceptable. The Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act 4 of 2000 (“the Equality Act”) forms part of this legislation. An ubuntu­based jurisprudence has been developed. Ubuntu is a concept which is contrasted with vengeance. It dictates that a high value be placed on the life of a human being. It places a high premium on dignity, compassion, humaneness and respect for the humanity of others. It enjoins good attitudes and shared concern, and a shift from confrontation to mediation and conciliation. It favours the re­establishment of harmony in the relationship between parties, and for such harmony to restore the dignity of a plaintiff without ruining the defendant.
