West III Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English Philip Jenkins Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of the Humanities *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the presentation of the Spanish Civil War in selected American periodicals. Understanding how war-related works functioned (aesthetically and rhetorically) requires a nuanced view of the circumstances of their production and an awareness of their immediate cultural context. I consider means of creation and publication to examine the complex ways in which the goals of truth-seeking and truth-shaping interacted—and were acted upon by the institutional dynamics of periodical production. By focusing on three specific periodicals that occupied different points along a line leading outward from the mainstream of American culture, I examine the ways in which certain pro- Loyalist writers and editors attempted to shape the truth of the Spanish war for American readers within the contexts and inherent restrictions of periodical publication. I argue that responses to the war in these publications are products of a range of cultural and institutional forces that go beyond the political affiliations or ideological stances of particular writers.

EL ENGLISH CAPTAIN DE THOMAS WINTRINGHAM (1939). MEMORIA Y OLVIDO DE UN BRIGADISTA BRITÁNICO English Captain by Thomas Wintringham (1939). ABSTRACT: Thomas Wintringham became the commanding officer of the Bri- tish Battalion in the International Brigades during the Battle of Jarama; he wrote a book about his experiences in the Spanish Civil War which is more than memories are usual because it offers original points of view about it and a real image of his complex personality. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Salford Institutional Repository Ideology and Total War: Military Intellectuals and the Analysis of the Spanish Civil War in Britain, 1936-1943 ALARIC SEARLE Within the context of interwar military debates, innovation and reform, the Spanish Civil War is generally associated with two armed forces, those of Germany and the Soviet Union. The broad consensus among military historians has been that the Germans learned the key lessons from the conflict, which thus contributed to their ‘Blitzkrieg victories’ in the period 1939-41, whereas the Soviet armed forces failed to draw the right conclusions and, as a result, were brought to the brink of disaster in the summer of 1941.1 While there are still gaps in the military history of the civil war, there has been considerable recent interest in the contemporary analysis of the war on the part of all the major European powers. It can be argued, though, that the role of the Spanish Civil War in European military debates has been over-simplified: specifically, there has been a tendency to view the assessments as simply revolving around the learning of tactical and technological lessons, even if there has been the occasional attempt to make links between ‘lessons learned’ and the concept of total war.2 Most problematic is that this ‘lessons learned’ approach has often led to the unspoken assumption that the analyses of the military events of the war took place in a form of a sober, apolitical environment.

  • Abraham Lincoln Brigade: African American Internationalism Manifested Jason Huang
Abraham Lincoln Brigade: African American Internationalism Manifested Jason Huang “The earth bounced under my rubbery legs like the deck of the ship that had brought me across the Atlantic. Each bomb tore open a new hole. Mounds of earth and white-hot shrapnel flew about me. Suddenly I felt a sudden stinging in my legs, but with so much happening I didn’t think any more about it. At moments the entire world seemed to be flying upwards, further darkening and polluting the already thick sulfurous air,” wrote James Yates in his memoir Mississippi to Madrid.1 To the average person, this might sound like a scene from World War Two: the brave American soldier charging fascist lines. However, this took place during the middle of the Spanish Civil War, around three years before the outbreak of the Second World War, and James Yates was not fighting for the United States Armed Forces. Instead, he was one of around ninety African Americans fighting alongside 2700 white Americans in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, an International Brigade composed of volunteers from the United States of America, 3300 miles away from home.2 The intersectionality present on the Republican side of the Spanish Civil War led to one of the most diverse locations in the world in 1936. International Brigades, volunteer battalions consisting of anti-fascists from all over the world, broke down racial, class, and gender barriers.
