For those of you who are still to subscribe for 2015 an early renewal would be greatly appreciated, there is an amazing amount of extra administrative work to do in the first two weeks of January to get the 2015 year on track, as well as getting the January MAR produced. The fewer subscriptions arriving in those two weeks helps! This issue sees the catching up of the August and September movements for many of the US in Europe airfields and this has resulted in a much smaller Foreign Section - hopefully, the November issue should see all sections back on an even keel. As I mentioned last month, all you visitors to the USA this autumn please remember to send in your reports to Moray (and Andy for OoS) and forward any photos to me at “[email protected]”. Ideally, serials, codes, units, special details/markings and any other information that would enhance a report in the magazine. Reports that only detail the serial and type with no other details are not very useful and cannot be reproduced in that form. Also reports that have been produced by feeding a serial into a database and then printing the resulting data are also questionable to their accuracy - you cannot beat the mark one eyeball! • BMFA Scale Technical Committee Newsletter - December 2013 Editorial: Andy Sephton
BMFA Scale Technical Committee Newsletter - December 2013 Editorial: Andy Sephton The main news for this issue is Scale Helicopters will be joining BMFA Scale from the R/C Power Technical Committee with effect from the 2014 season. The 2014 Rule Book will incorporate the Helicopter Scale Rules and we will be co-opting a Scale Helicopter flyer onto the Scale Technical Committee. I didn’t get the chance to see them at this year’s Nationals, but I’m looking forward to witnessing their models next year. I’m sure you’ll join me in giving them a warm welcome into our group. For Scale Indoor Flyers, please note that the next Scale Indoor Nationals will be my last as organiser. We need a successor, please contact me for more information. I was asked by more than one modeller if static judging could be brought into the flying only schedule for Scale Indoor Free Flight and RC so that more complex models with less than ideal flying characteristics would not be disadvantaged. The very reason that flying only was introduced was to give the less complex models a chance in Scale competition. It also allows models with less than complete documentation to be constructed and demonstrated in competition. The best place to compete complex models is the Nationals, Flying Only is for flying models and there is no mark given for complexity. There will be a number of rule changes for 2014 in the January 2014 issue of the BMFA Scale Rule Book. See later in this Newsletter for a summary Results: to save space, result tables for those competitions that have their results promulgated on the Scale BMFA website have not been included in the Newsletter.

ISSUE No 83 - SUMMER 2015 Thirty years ago this year, Plane Sailing Air Displays Ltd started operations with its first Catalina. Here she is over the Kent coast on February 20th 1985 at the end of the ferry flight from South Africa and inbound to RAF Manston. Soon afterwards she had been repainted in RAF colours and was flying all over Europe (see inside front cover) Arthur Gibson £1.75 (free to members) PHOTOPAGE Plane Sailing Air Displays Ltd operated its Wright Cyclone-powered 'Super Cat' between 1985 and 1998. This photograph was taken by a Royal Navy photographer in the vicinity of RNAS Portland in Dorset during an event there and before the aircraft had blister turrets placed back on the rear hull. It was painted to represent the RAF Catalina JV928/Y of 210 Squadron as flown by Flt Lt John Cruickshank when he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Later, it was repainted in RCAF colours as 9754/P to represent the other Catalina VC holder David Hornell, its Captain. • Air Transport
The History of Air Transport KOSTAS IATROU Dedicated to my wife Evgenia and my sons George and Yianni Copyright © 2020: Kostas Iatrou First Edition: July 2020 Published by: Hermes – Air Transport Organisation Graphic Design – Layout: Sophia Darviris Material (either in whole or in part) from this publication may not be published, photocopied, rewritten, transferred through any electronical or other means, without prior permission by the publisher. Preface ommercial aviation recently celebrated its first centennial. Over the more than 100 years since the first Ctake off, aviation has witnessed challenges and changes that have made it a critical component of mod- ern societies. Most importantly, air transport brings humans closer together, promoting peace and harmo- ny through connectivity and social exchange. A key role for Hermes Air Transport Organisation is to contribute to the development, progress and promo- tion of air transport at the global level. This would not be possible without knowing the history and evolu- tion of the industry. Once a luxury service, affordable to only a few, aviation has evolved to become accessible to billions of peo- ple. But how did this evolution occur? This book provides an updated timeline of the key moments of air transport. It is based on the first aviation history book Hermes published in 2014 in partnership with ICAO, ACI, CANSO & IATA. I would like to express my appreciation to Professor Martin Dresner, Chair of the Hermes Report Committee, for his important role in editing the contents of the book. I would also like to thank Hermes members and partners who have helped to make Hermes a key organisa- tion in the air transport field.

  • Thoughts on Historical Aircraft Preservation.Pdf
Thoughts on Historical Aircraft Preservation Ray Polidano Director, Malta Aviation Museum Aviation Museums worldwide, apart from some that were started by far-sighted individuals such as Richard Shuttleworth in the UK, only became popular in the early 1970s. After all, aviation is only just over a century old, with the first ever powered and controlled flight taking place in December 1903. In Malta, we still have to wait until 2015 to celebrate the centenary of the first recorded flight, which took place in 1915. On 13 th February 1915, a Short Admiralty 135 floatplane from HMS Ark Royal, which was berthed in Grand Harbour, flew over the harbour for some minutes. The First World War was raging at the time, and German and Austrian U-Boats were sinking a large number of ships in the vicinity of Malta. It was then decided by the Admiralty that a number of flying boats were to be built at the Malta Dockyard to counter this threat . During this period, all flying from Malta was conducted off the sea in Marsaxlokk Bay or Mistra. A seaplane base was built at Kalafrana equipped with hangars and slipways. A control tower was built at Delimara on the other side of the bay. In 1918, towards the end of the First World War, a German Zeppelin based in Hungary began targeting Allied European cities, and after Naples was bombed, six Sopwith Camels were sent to Malta to defend the island. With no airfield available at such short notice, Marsa sports ground was used as an airfield. During the 1920s and 1930s, Malta was a staging post for many an adventurous pioneer on flights from Britain to Africa, Australia and the Far East.

Except where otherwise stated, books listed are 8vo or thereabouts, are not illustrated and have dust-wrappers.
