Precious but Not Precious UP-RE-CYCLING
The sounds of ideas forming , Volume 3 Alan Dunn, 22 July 2020 presents precious but not precious UP-RE-CYCLING This is the recycle tip at Clatterbridge. In February 2020, we’re dropping off some stuff when Brigitte shouts “if you get to the plastic section sharpish, someone’s throwing out a pile of records.” I leg it round and within seconds, eyes and brain honed from years in dank backrooms and charity shops, I smell good stuff. I lean inside, grabbing a pile of vinyl and sticking it up my top. There’s compilations with Blondie, Boomtown Rats and Devo and a couple of odd 2001: A Space Odyssey and Close Encounters soundtracks. COVER (VERSIONS) www.alandunn67.co.uk/coverversions.html For those that read the last text, you’ll enjoy the irony in this introduction. This story is about vinyl but not as a precious and passive hands-off medium but about using it to generate and form ideas, abusing it to paginate a digital sketchbook and continuing to be astonished by its magic. We re-enter the story, the story of the sounds of ideas forming, after the COVER (VERSIONS) exhibition in collaboration with Aidan Winterburn that brings together the ideas from July 2018 – December 2019. Staged at Leeds Beckett University, it presents the greatest hits of the first 18 months and some extracts from that first text that Aidan responds to (https://tinyurl.com/y4tza6jq), with me in turn responding back, via some ‘OUR PRICE’ style stickers with quotes/stats. For the exhibition, the mock-up sleeves fabricated by Tom Rodgers look stunning, turning the digital detournements into believable double-sided artefacts. -

Reclaim the Streets, the Protestival and the Creative Transformation of the City
Finisterra, XLVii, 94, 2012, pp. 103-118103 RECLAIM THE STREETS, THE PROTESTIVAL aND THE CREaTiVE TRaNSFoRMaTioN oF THE CiTY anDré carMo1 abstract – the main goal of this article is to reflect upon the relationship between creativity and urban transformation. it stems from the assumption that creativity has a para- doxical nature as it is simultaneously used for the production of the neoliberal city and by those seeking to challenge it and build alternative urban realities. first, we put forth a criti- cal review of the creative city narrative, focused on richard florida’s work, as it progres- sively became fundamental for the neoliberal city. afterwards, and contrasting with that dominant narrative, we describe a trajectory of Reclaim the Streets that provides the basis for our discussion of the protestival (protest + carnival) as its main creative force of urban transformation. Keywords: Creativity, urban transformation, Reclaim the Streets, protestival. Resumo – reclaiM the streets, o protestival e a transForMação criativa Da ciDaDe. -

East and West As the Basic Concepts of Solidarity 1980-1989
East and West as the Basic Concepts of Solidarity 1980-1989 Bronisław Swiderski A number of both Polish and foreign commentators conceive Solidarity as an alternative to both the ideology and the practice of the communist system. Books by historians, political scientists and journalists, for example by Alain Touraine (1982), Timothy Garton Ash (1983), Jerzy Holzer (1984), Lopiński, Moskit and Wilk (1989) or Georges Mink (1989) emphasize the conflict between Solidarity and the government. The authors see it as a struggle for freedom, democracy and liberalism against dictatorship. Analyses by Roman Laba (1991) and by Lawrence Goodwyn (1991) distinguish simultaneous confrontations on two different levels: one between the working class and the Leninist state, the other within Solidarity itself: the working class and the intellectual ideologues. Sergiusz Kowalski (1990) offers an interesting discussion of the distinction between tradition and the past in Solidarity ideology, as well as of the trade-union's "reconstruction" of the Polish tradition as an anti-communist one. Barbara Törnquist-Plewa (1992) points out the confrontation between different ideas which arose as Solidarity appropriated "Polish" religion, history and tradition. The official system was thus left unrooted in the Polish past. Many scholars, then, considered Solidarity to be a political and ideological alternative to the communist system, and saw the situation as the "new world" fighting l'ancien regime. But did the ideas of Solidarity and their application in fact constitute a real alternative to the official structures? It seems that more of the actual facts indicate that Solidarity should be described as complementary to Slavica Lundensia 14, 1995, pp 43-53 Bronisław Swiderski and not as an alternative to the official Poland of the time. -

For various very compelling reasons we have decided that this is the last ever issue of Do or Die that will be produced. We’ll continue to work on the distribution of this issue, and are engaged in maintaining the web site and dealing with general requests—as well as various other radical projects. As this is the last ever issue we are not taking any subscribers, submissions or pre-orders, but donations to help us clear our huge printing debts of about £6,000 would be very gratefully received. Any extra (HA!) will be put towards radical ecological direct action. Ten years, gone in a flash… The black helicopters are circling our compound.
