The Best of 25 Boutique Hotels in Lisbon

A boutique hotel is a small hotel with few rooms and a unique or intimate atmosphere, usually with a themed décor. Many are also considered "design hotels" but are not necessarily luxury accommodation. Many of the centuries-old buildings in Lisbon's historic neighborhoods have been renovated to become boutique hotels in the last few years, and now combine traditional and modern design. There's a large variety to choose from, so here's the list of the 25 that stand out.

7 | Hotel Santiago de Alfama

It’s found between the castle and the most beautiful lookout terraces in Alfama, and was once a palace and a factory. By Tom Barber

Underestimate Western Europe's oldest capital at your peril. A port at the centre of what was once a vast and wealthy maritime empire will always be a cosmopolitan place to hang out. Lisbon does distinct districts beautifully, with the formality of the central Praça do Comércio (created after the earthquake of 1755) flanked by the winding lanes of the Alfama, the city's centre under the Arabic occupation of Iberia, and the once-seedy and now achingly cool dockyard area of Cais do Sodré. The city has rediscovered its mojo in a major way: where bacalao (salt cod) was once the culinary high (ie, not very high at all), young chefs are reimagining Portuguese petiscos (tapas); meanwhile, elegant town houses are being converted into chic hotels, and the nightlife is as good as any self-respecting seafront city should expect.

Eating & Sleeping

Stay

While the Bairro Alto Hotel in the district of the same name remains a winner, we also love the new Hotel Valverde, located on the city's most bling boulevard, and with rooms by the same designers as the Bairro Alto. After the inevitable big night out, retire to the Pateo garden, complete with pool, five o'clock tea and cocktail bar, or settle in for a movie in the small cinema. The restaurant serves a range of excellent modern Portuguese fare.

Lunch

Exhibit A of the vision that is transforming the city's culinary fortunes, the 19th-century Mercado da Ribeira, which was getting a bit tired to say the least, has been completely overhauled (by Time Out, of all people). Half remains a traditional food market that's great for browsing, while the other half has been transformed into a food hall with outlets from some of Portugal's best chefs, including Alexandre Silva, previously of the excellent Bica do Sapato restaurant. Sit at one of the long communal tables and try his black risotto with scallops and seaweed accompanied with a glass of Corrente white from the Alentejo wine region.

Dine

Long Iberia's culinary poor relation, things are on a roll thanks largely to two chefs, Nuno Mendes (of Chiltern Firehouse fame) and

Jose Avillez (ex-El Bulli), who has opened five restaurants in the Cais do Sodré and Chiado districts. Avillez's Belcanto has just received a second Michelin star. Have the 360° Discoveries tasting menu, which shows how Portugal's former colonies have influenced the country's cuisine. belcanto.pt

Esquire UK + Tom Barber Do, Drink & Party

See

Street art on an epic scale. The city may be on the up, but there were enough derelict buildings — and city-government visionaries — for artists such as local hero Vhils and Brazilian twins Os Gémeos to make some of the world's finest public art.

Do

Use the city as your base camp for everything from surfing in Cascais (half an hour to the west) to serious beach action in (an hour south), a supercool boho hangout where glamorous Lisbonites hire villas for the summer.

Shop

More than a century on, the tiny shoe shop Sapataria do Carmo still stocks supremely dapper, handcrafted gents' footwear for about half the price you'd pay in London.

Drink

The nightlife action has moved along the Tagus river waterfront, from Doca de Alcantara in the shadow of the to Cais do Sodré. A cracker is Pensão Amor, which was once a brothel frequented by sailors. It retains a bawdy bordello feel, with suitably X-rated artwork and objets de smut in the loos. And the cocktails are pretty decent. pensaoamor.pt

Party

Head to hot bar and club A Bom, O Mau e O Vilão ("the good, the bad and the ugly"), which is very light on the latter, as Lisbon's abundant beautiful types congregate here. It's also a very convenient place to wander to and from Pensão Amor (see Drinks). It's just 30ft away and serves a wide range of craft gins and also hosts DJ-driven revelry until late at weekends.

Esquire UK + Tom Barber

When in…

Eat tinned fish. Head to the original Thirties Conserveira de Lisboa shop on Rua dos Bacalhoeiros or the outlet in the Mercado da Ribeira for delicious tinned anchovies, octopus and, best of all, sardines in lemon, packaged in beautiful vintage tins. Alternatively, the ring-pull cans make an ideal midnight refuel at Sol e Pesca, a fishing-tackle shop turned hip bar.

Avoid

Fado, Portugal's inimitable and melancholic folk music. It has its merits as a cultural phenomenon (so much so that it has just earned Unesco World Heritage status) and there are many wonderful practitioners of the art. But nothing will kill a night out's form quicker than being stuck in a restaurant listening to a fado singer in full remorse mode. Makes country music sound like euphoric trance.

Why now?

Because Lisbon is on. There might not be a cooler city in Europe at this precise moment, and these moments can be fleeting.

Esquire UK + Tom Barber 10 reasons why you should visit Lisbon in 2016

It's basically the new Barcelona... but better ------

By KATE LOUGH - 30 December 2015 on www.standard.co.uk

Hot in 2016: Lisbon

It has a warm Mediterranean climate and sandy beaches, it's affordable and there are plenty of fiestas to be had. What's not to love about Lisbon, one of the hottest new destinations for 2016? It's basically the new Barcelona - minus the Brit stag and hen parties.

1. It's very good value for money

It's one of the cheapest capital cities in Europe - but not everyone seems to have cottoned onto that yet. A pint of beer in Lisbon costs just £1.39, compared with £3.39 in Barcelona, £3.81 in Amsterdam and a whopping £5.39 in Paris.

2. Activities galore

You've got the Atlantic Ocean on one side, so you can pop down to the beach for watersports like sailing and surfing as well as a spot of fishing. You can also book yourself into Portuguese cookery classes, wine tours and party boats. Hiking is also popular.

3. It's known as the 'Sunshine Capital'

Lisbon gets a mega 3000 hours of sunlight every year, and temperatures reaching over 30 degress during the hottest months. So pack your swimmers and your shades.

Party town: Lisbon by night

4. It has a real party scene

Lisbon offers a vibrant nightlife scene with Barrio Alto being one of the best districts to head to for a great night out. Home to more than 250 bars and clubs including infamous hot-spots such as Lust, Ministerium and Lux, the latter owned by hollywood actor John Malkovich.

5. It's just over 2 hours away...

The flight time from London to Lisbon is only 2 hours and 20 minutes. Flight prices are consistently affordable due to the great weather making it an all year round destination.

6. It's popular with celebs

Lisbon attracts many famous faces and musicians such as Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Selena Gomez, Little Mix and sportstars like Cristiano Ronaldo can often be found holidaying there.

7. One of the quietest capitals in the world

Hilly Lisbon is full of stairs, and devoid of cars, which makes it even more beautiful. It's a city where you can hear you own thoughts.

8. Beautiful cultural and historical attractions

Soak up some local culture with a visit to the world’s most most expensive chapel, Sao Roque Church. You can wander the old town to see unique scenery and picturesque cobbled streets.

9. Never ending array of beaches

Lisbon is a sun kissed city and due to it bordering the Atlantic Ocean, it is home to a selection of beautiful sandy beaches along its coast. Locals are known to head out to the beach all year, not just in the summer to enjoy the refreshing atlantic breeze.

10. It's a compact city

Despite being the country’s largest city, Lisbon is conveniently accesible with distinct areas for bar- hopping, shopping and stunning beaches all in walking distance. It is a friendly city with a great essence for life.

The 50 Best Terraces in Lisbon As 50 Melhores Esplanadas em Lisboa

------

Published on www.lisbonlux.com

With beautiful views, good ambience, or attractive locations on the waterfront, in city squares or by kiosks, these are the fifty terraces that you should look for in Lisbon whenever the weather is inviting. In addition to these fifty sunny spots, we also recommend ten rooftop bars above the city, which you may check out here: The Top 10 Rooftop Bars in Lisbon »

1 | Portas do Sol »

This is Lisbon’s best "balcony,” overlooking Alfama, the river, and the passing trams. It’s perfect for sunbathing, but those who prefer the shade will find it at the tables. In addition to the magnificent view, it also offers meals and drinks throughout the day.

Ribeira das Naus, now known as the “beach” of downtown Lisbon, has a kiosk with a terrace in a circle right by the water. There are those who sit in the sun for hours, facing the view of 25 de Abril Bridge and of the crossing ferries.

Found between the Discoveries Monument and the Belem Tower, this terrace is one of the best spots to sit in the sun on the waterfront. It’s open throughout the day, and also serves lunch and dinner.

This small sailboat serves drinks and pastries to those who want to sit and enjoy the view of Comercio Square, the Tagus and 25 de Abril Bridge. Small tables and beach chairs are placed daily on the waterfront, on the spot where you can have one of the best sunset views in town, especially during the winter months.

5 | Praça do Comércio »

It’s now hard to believe, but the first terraces on Comércio Square (which most locals insist on calling by its old name, Terreiro do Paço) only opened in 2011. They first appeared on the west wing, and in the following year came those on the east wing. The sun shines on the west wing in the morning, and on the east in the afternoon. The tables are aligned, giving the impression of just one large terrace at first glance. But they are actually several, by different cafés and restaurants. They offer the choice of traditional Portuguese food, Italian, contemporary Portuguese, and international. And there’s also ice cream, beer, and snacks to enjoy looking out to the waterfront and the monumental architecture.

Come rain or shine, this is one of the most popular terraces in Lisbon. It’s a white iron-and-glass structure open to the water’s edge, serving light meals throughout the day, with a view of the Discoveries Monument.

A group of warehouses of the Port of Lisbon was turned into a major leisure and dining destination a few years ago. It has a variety of restaurants for all tastes, from those specializing in fish (the most expensive choices) to pizza (cheaper). In front of each of them, there's a terrace with a beautiful view of the marina and of 25 de Abril Bridge.

8 | Meninos do Rio »

The furnishings have changed over the years, but there’s always the choice of staying in the sun at a table or lounger. What also doesn’t change is one of the best places to stay on the waterfront, on a sunny afternoon or at night. Palm trees are also part of the “décor,” but they provide little shade, as the main attraction here is the sun, the ambience, and the drinks and meals.

This terrace faces Belem Tower, where the Tagus begins to flow into the Atlantic. It serves lunch and dinner, and there’s also a menu for snacks in the afternoon.

Many believe this is Lisbon’s most beautiful viewpoint. A kiosk with terrace facing the castle was opened in 2010, attracting tourists and locals who stay for a drink or light meal. It stays open until late on Friday and Saturday.

11 | Miradouro da Graça »

Here you may breathe in Lisbon (and the scent of pine trees), with a view of the castle, the river, and almost the entire city center. Open until late, this terrace is where tourists relax after walking up the city’s hills, and where locals meet to cool off with a beer and the breeze throughout the night.

12 | Doca do Jardim do Tabaco »

14 | Praça do Município »

Municipal Square is one of the most elegant in the city, and since 2013 it has a kiosk serving freshly- squeezed juices, salads, and sandwiches for a meal at any time of the day. The terrace invites you to sit and admire the cobblestone designs and surrounding architecture, to the sound of the passing trams.

This terrace always has at least one customer -- poet Fernando Pessoa’s statue, usually being photographed by tourists. For this small monument and for the history of the café opened in 1905, this is one of the mandatory stops for anyone visiting Lisbon. It’s sometimes difficult to get a table, especially when the sidewalk in front is the stage of street artist performances.

28 | Cais do Gás

Cais do Gás is a pier in Cais do Sodré (next to the ferries station), and has a group of old warehouses, most of them restored.
