Deze stad heeft een bewogen geschiedenis achter de rug, een geschiedenis die nog zeer sterk aanwezig is in het straatbeeld van deze wereldstad. In de loop van de eeuwen is de stad vele malen veroverd en heroverd, wat telkens zijn stempel gedrukt heeft op het uitzicht van de stad. De meest flagrante veroveringen zijn deze van de Pheniciërs, Grieken, Catharen, Moren en de Romeinen. Over de oorsprong van de naam bestaan vele theorieën. De ene zegt dat ze is afgeleid van het Phenisisch voor ‘veilig haven’ (nl. Allis Ubbo), een andere stelt dat ze afkomstig is van de pre – Romeinse naam voor de Tagus rivier (nl. Lisso of Lucio). In de Renaissance kende Portugal een zeer sterke groei dankzij de ontdekkingsreizen. De meest bekende hiervan is uiteraard de reis van Vasco Da Gama naar India (1497). Een reis die de belangrijkste vaarroute naar India vastlegde en waar de inwoners van Lissabon nog steeds trots op zijn. In 1755 werd echter een groot deel van de stad verwoest door een aardbeving. De heropbouw werd aangegrepen om het historische centrum te herschapen volgens ‘moderne’ stedebouwkundige ideeën. Serpa Pinto 9, Lisbon, Portugal Beschrijving project Teatro Nacional de São Carlos is een operagebouw in de historische centrum van Lissabon, Chiado wijk. Het werd op 30 juli 1793 geopend voor de publiek door de toenmalige koningin Queen Maria I als vervanging voor de Tejo Opera House welke in 1755 werd vernietigd door een aardbeving. Het theater is gefinancierd door een groep zakenmannen en is sterk geïnspireerd door de grote Italiaanse theatergebouwen zoals San Carlo of Naples en La Scala in Milaan. De architect, José da Costa e Silva heeft uitbundig gebruik gemaakt van neoklassieke en rococo elementen. De voorgevel heeft een versierde klok in de stijl van Potugese wapenschild en een inkom hal met bogen, een portico. De theater is genoemd naar de prinses Charlotte of Spain die in 1790 naar Portugal kwam om te trouwen met de toen toekomstige koning prins John Carlos. Meest opvallende binnen is de hoofdhal. Het heeft een ellipsvorm met het oog op de akoestische prestaties, vooral voor de luxueuze royale box en de toneelruimte, dit geïnspireerd door de Italiaanse tegenhangers. De 5 rijk versierde rijen boxen vormen als het ware een halsketting en zorgen voor een totaal van 1148 zitjes. Het geheel wordt mooi vervolledigd door een grandioze handgemaakte luster uit Murano kristal. ‐ 10 ‐ ‐ 11 ‐ Camoes Square Evelyn Blondeel Siza Vieira 3e Ba plein Tussen Chiado en Bairro Alto wijken Camoes Square Dit kleine plein is de overgangszone tussen de wijken Chiado en Bairro Alto. In het midden vinden we een monumentaal standbeeld van de 16de eeuwse dichter Luis de Camões, op een sokkel waarop nog andere klassieke Portugese auteurs staan afgebeeld. Achter het standbeeld bevindt zich een historische kiosk waar traditionele Portugese drankjes worden geserveerd. dHet beel kijkt naar Largo do Chiado, waar er twee barokke kerken staan: Loreto ("van de Italianen") en Encarnacao. We vinden hier tevens het bekendste café van Lissabon; A Brasileira. Dit vormt het hart van de ontmoetingsplaats van verschillende generaties, intelecutelen en kunstenaars. Aan het terras van het A Brasileira staat nog een standbeeld, dit keer de dichter Fernando Pessoa zittend in een stoel, herinnerend aan de dagen waarin hij veel van zijn succesvolle boeken schreef op dit terras. De wijken Chiado en Bairro Alto Tegenwoordig is Chiado een wijk van Lissabon met veel prestige. Het is een hisorische plaats, vaak bezocht door modernistische intellectuelen. Chiado wordt stees gekoppeld aan een romantische, modernisctische, liberale en intelectuele sfeer. De beroemde koffiehuizen (A Brasileira), winkelstraten (Rua Garrett), theaters (Trindade, São Luiz en São Carlos), kloosters (Carmo‐klooster), kerken (oa. Loreto), het Musuem van Hedendaagse Kunst, de Santa Justa‐lift,.. zijn slechts enkele belangrijke monumenten en symbolen van Lissabon waarop Chiado rechtecht fier kan zijn. ‐ 12 ‐ Echter, in 1988 brak een ernstige brand uit en verwoeste grote delen van Chiado. Sindsdien hebben heel wat restauratiewerken en reorganisatiesplannen plaatsgevonden onder leiding van de Portugese architect Siza Vieira. Zo bleef de stad trouw aan zijn historie en kon ze dankzij haar nieuwe infrastructur mee met de toekomst. Onbekend Onbekend Openbare ruimte / uitzicht Santa Catarina wijk, Lissabon, Portugal. Beschrijving project Volgens de legende werd Lissabon gebouwd op zeven heuvels (cfr. Brussel, Rome). Strikt geografisch gesproken zijn het er veel meer, maar wat het exacte aantal ook is, deze heuvels bieden op verschillende plaatsen in de stad een adembenemend uitzicht. Miradouro de Santa Catarina is zo één van deze plaatsen (Miradouros betekent letterijk ‘uitkijkplaatsen’). Gelegen in de wijk Santa Catarina, omgeven door pastelkleurige huisjes en cafeetjes vormt deze plaats een geliefde rustplaats voor de vele toeristen. Het plein kijkt uit over de Tagus (Rio Tejo), het oude stadscentrum en de moderne ’25 de Abril’ brug, die verdacht veel op Golden Gate brug van San Fransisco lijkt. Op het terras bevindt zich een beeld van “Adamastor”, een mythologisch zeemonster uit het epos “The Lusiads” en achter het plein bevindt zich het Museu Nacional Das Farmácias. Door de uitstekende ligging van deze miradouro is het een plaats die dag en nacht leeft, zowel door de toeristen als door de lokale bevolking. ‐ 14 ‐ ‐ 15 ‐ Carmo Convent Church Dafinë Blakçori i.o. ridder Nuno Álvares Pereira 1e Ma 1389 ‐ 1423 kerk Chiado wijk, Lissabon, Portugal Beschrijving project De Carmo Klooster, in het Portugees Convento da Ordem do Carmo, is een moment in het Chiado wijk in het stad Lissabon, op een heuvel kijken over de Rossio plein. Deze middeleeuwse klooster was vernietigd in 1755 door een aardbeving en te samen met de ruïnes van zijn gotische kerk, Carmo Church of ook Igreja do Carmo, zijn het de meest opvallende sporen van die verschrikkelijke natuurramp. GEN ED AH & WC + CASE GCC & CASE A&H May 6-25, 2019 Lisbon, Portugal Professor Estela Vieira [[email protected], mobile: +1-203-434-1424] Department of Spanish and Portuguese Course objectives Portuguese is spoken across several continents and is the sixth most spoken language in the world. This course introduces students to one of the first globalized cultures and languages, the Portuguese-speaking world. Based in the second-oldest capital city in Europe, Lisbon, Portugal, we will learn about this global cultural network by hands-on studying of its arts and culture. Lisbon is a cosmopolitan city that has experienced waves of globalization throughout its long history. The course explores the ways and forms with which the Portuguese have historically forged global connections to different parts of the world: Asia, Brazil, and Africa. Thus, while learning about one of Europe’s most fascinating capital cities, students will gain a historical perspective into processes of globalization and a broad understanding of the cultural links between the regions that make up the Portuguese-speaking or Lusophone world. We will begin with an overview of Portuguese expansion in the early modern period and focus on connections between Asia and Portugal. Then we turn to the influence the colonization of Brazil has had on Portugal concentrating on the 18th and 19th centuries. Lastly, we focus on the former Portuguese- speaking African colonies, their struggle for independence, and continued relations to Portugal in the 20th century. Lectures will provide historical, socio-political, and cultural context, and our discussions will be devoted to literary/fictional, cultural, and historical texts, films, paintings, and architecture.

INTRODUCTION Expo-98 took place at a 18ha site bordering the Tagus River at a derilicted harbour area previously full of gas and petrol containers. The overall project (Expo-98 and all urban renovation) amounted to two million euros obtained as such: 65% from bank loans, 25% from the Portuguese Government and 10% from European Union. Increases in the amount of foreign visitors in Portugal were estimated at 10% in 1998 and 13% of budget increase (approximately 0,5 million euros). Expo -98 Management Board argues that these net gains associated with taxes due and paid exceeded the amount of money the State donated to this urban project. At a time when big bang events are having a more and more important role in urban dynamics of several towns, the identification and quantification of adverse and beneficial impacts remains to be done. This paper addresses this issue in a qualitative approach for the case-study of the 1998 World Exposition in Lisbon. The question that remains to be answered is the following: is this event- planning for specific targets the only way to have a global high-quality planned public space in Portugal? The site opened two weeks after the closing of Expo-98 at the end of September 1998, re- named as Parque das Nações (Nations’ Park) with some areas closed for refurbishment by blocks and not as a whole construction site.
