5 6 7 8 9 Lisbon, your destination

10 Lisboa, the capital of Portugal, lies on seven low hills at the estuary of the river , six miles from the . It is the westernmost large City located in Europe, as well as it’s westernmost Capital City and the only one along the Atlantic Coast. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world and the oldest City in western Europe pre-dating other modern capital cities, as London, Paris or Rome. The origins of Lisbon are shrouded in legend, among its mythical founders are Elisha and Ulysses. Its name derives from Olissapona, a Latin version of the Phoenician "Allis Ubbo" or " delightful little port". Lisbon was occupied successively by Phoenicians around 1200 BC, followed by the Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors and finally conquered in 1147 AD by Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, with the aid of English crusaders. The city was made Portugal's capital in 1255, and was the seat of the monarchy until the Republic in 1910. As Portugal developed into the greatest power in the 15th century onwards, so Lisbon became a very important port, the centre for trade in spices and jewels from the East and gold from Brazil, and capital of the Portuguese Empire. Today, Lisbon is a lively, international city with a population of half million, offering a fascinating combination of the old and the new, with an unmistakable character and a beauty all of its own.

In 1999, the Cerealis Group, a company involved in the processing of cereals, acquired property. Only five minutes from and very close to the main railway stations in Lisbon (Santa Apolónia and Oriente), Beato Convent is located in a historic part of Lisbon, rich in tradition and culture, close to the Tagus River. The restoration of a number of areas and the constant investment in improvements to the building have made it possible to be used for all kind of events in which style, security and practicality are the keys to success.

66 Estufa ria Initially designed as a plant shelter,F the Lisbon Estufa Fria is a space where you can enjoy pleasant moments amongst pools, waterfalls, creeks, statues and hundreds of species of different plants from all over the world. This 800 m2 multipurpose space is now available for staging any type of event (parties, weddings, conferences and congresses), thereby bringing back the glamour, mysticism and power of attraction which have always accompanied it since its construction in the 1950’s. The Lisbon Estufa Fria, designed by the respected engineer Edgar Cardoso, dates back to the 1950’s and it was built with a view to carrying on the design of the large central avenue (Parque Eduardo VII) which, as it was devised with the same width as Av. da Liberdade, clashed with the excavated quarry area (situated in the Estufa Fria). This is why it proved necessary to build this spacious vaulted building as a way of overcoming the excavated span. It is thus a semi-buried building made of reinforced concrete comprising ten arches which accompany the slope of the hill on which it is located, including, at the Northern end, a rock outcrop of basalt. The interior is lined in gravel pebbles, resembling washed marmorite. Over the years various events have been staged at the Nave of the Lisbon Estufa Fria such as concerts, exhibitions, congresses and advertising actions.

67 PÁTIO da GALÉ

The Portuguese capital has a new venue for enjoying the city, Pátio da Galé, in Terreiro do Paço, featuring areas dedicated to food & beverage, leisure, culture and events. Following its renovation by architect James Silva Dias, Pátio da Galé is today a privileged setting that combines a historical background with a fashionable atmosphere and has hosted some major events in the Portuguese capital's calendar.

69 PENA PALACE RESTAURANT

The Pena Palace stands on the top of a hill above the town of Sintra. It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The restaurant space corresponds to the former servants' quarters of the Pena Palace and was initially divided by several partitions. Its demolition in the late twentieth century made it possible to spot a robust structure with pillars and vaulted “torais” stone arches, similar to the old stables on the ground floor, which is the Store.

At the restaurant, pillars mark the rhythm space, while the windows open to the park, establishing a close relationship with the surrounding nature.

70 Santa Maria Restaurant

Perched right at the edge of the dunes of the Guincho beach, close to the cosmopolitan town of in Portugal, is the Porto de Santa Maria Restaurant. Described as the “place where the sea and the land meet” the Porto de Santa Maria Restaurant perfectly manages to reflect its geographical location in its delicious menu that combines the very best of freshly caught Atlantic fish and seafood with meat and poultry dishes inspired by centuries of Portuguese culinary tradition. Established in 1947, the Porto de Santa Maria Restaurant is one of the longest-surviving eateries in Guincho and is something of an institution in the area. However that is not to say that the owners have rested on their laurels and the restaurant is highly deserving of its Michelin Star, a reflection of its 65 years at the forefront of gastronomy in the area. 71 DARWIN’S Restaurant

Darwin's Cafe is located in a beautiful riverside area and marries distinctive architectural design to an outstanding and diverse menu. The interior decor of Darwin’s cafe transports all who enter to the world of the British naturalist and biologist who lends his name to the Centre’s restaurant. One of Lisbon’s most desirable locations and one of the most sought after places to dine in the city. The traces of the past inherent in the decoration merge with the modernity of the space to create an incomparable atmosphere. 77 PRE & POST CONFERENCE TOURS ARCHIPELAGO A truly exceptional wealth of landscape associated with a peaceful atmosphere that is in contact with the everyday pressures–these are some of the attractive aspects of the Azores. If to this we add the extraordinary potential of the Archipelago for golfing, yachting and fishing, we certainly have a very special Destination to offer. Each of the nine islands of the Azores have its own enchantment, but they have certain things in common: their exuberant greenness in varied hues, brought out by an abundance of flowers; the cool takes nestling at the bottom of volcanic craters. Life lived at a rate in which there is time to taste the joy of living simply and peacefully. Nature in all her splendor, encouraging one to discover a different world, which each of the islands of the Azores contains.

78 PORTO & THE GREEN COAST PRE & POST CONFERENCE TOURS Portugal’s most fertile region, the Green Coast takes its name from its pervasive lush greenness. At the hub of Green Coast there is Porto, Portugal’s second most important city, a busy, bustling centre of industrial and commercial activity, the bearer of a long and rich tradition, home of a hard-working, conservative and fiercely independent people. Not to be missed when visiting this fascinating city is the lively Ribeira (Riverside) area, stretching along the River Douro with its quays, markets, shops and a cool cellars where Port Wine is aged. Porto - in fact, the whole region - is also famous for its cuisine - marvellous cooking that has to be experienced to be believed.
