Das Forças Armadas, 1649-026 Lisboa. Portugal. **Address: CHAIA-Centro de História da Arte e Investigação Artística da Universidade de Évora, Apartado 94,7002-554 Évora. e-mail: [email protected] - [email protected] - [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper reviews the development of Costa do Sol, as planned by architect urbanist Alfred-Donat Agache, for Lisbon Region in Portugal. The Plano Expansão Região Oeste de Lisboa (1934-1936) prepared by Agache and requested by Portuguese Minister of Public Works, Duarte Pacheco will be analyzed. This paper aims also to identify the principles and the theoretical foundations that have determined Agache urban vision for Lisbon City and its Territory. Finally, this paper aims to demonstrate that Alfred-Donat Agache methodological framework has applied Frederick Le Play socio-economic scientific approach. Such approach has informed the construction of a ‘civic’ urbanism that will be identified and analyzed. Two main goals seem to have guided Agache work at Costa do Sol: (i) the fully urban analysis of the city, throughout its social, economic, geographic and urban conditions (past and present) and (ii) the need to expose such analysis to the city’s inhabitants. Finally, this paper demonstrates Costa do Sol proposal to testify a comprehensive understanding of three distinct scales: (i) the territory; (ii) the city; (iii) but also the urban form.

  • Asymmetric Regional Dynamics: from Bust to Recovery
Asymmetric regional dynamics: from bust to recovery Fernando Alexandre∗ H´elderCostay Miguel Portelaz Miguel Rodriguesx November 26, 2018 Abstract Regional convergence stands out in the severe adjustment of the Portuguese economy that followed the international financial crisis. This result contrasts with increasing regional inequality in other European countries. We show that regions' GDP growth rates of the Portuguese economy were driven by debt and exports. Our estimates suggest that differences in regional debt-to-GDP and exports-to- GDP ratios resulted in asymmetric regional economic dynamics. Highly indebted regions had a more severe recession and a slower recovery. Regions more open to trade had a milder recession and a stronger recovery. Finally, our results suggest that fiscal decentralization may improve regions' resilience. Keywords: regional development, economic convergence, debt, exports, local government, fiscal decentralization, resilience, international financial crisis, Eurozone crisis. ABSTRACT Key words: Neogene; Portugal. Aftera briefhistorical introduction, this paper deals with the main concerned geotectonic units: the Lower Tagus and Alvalade basins, the Western and Southern borders, and their infillings. Most of the Neogene events and record concern areas South of the Iberian Central Chain, a nearly inverse situation as that of Paleogene times. In the most important of these units, the Lower Tagus basin, there are quite thick detrital series, mostly marine in its distal part near Lisboa (albeit with several continental intercalations), and mainly continental in its inner part. Sedimentological record is almost complete since Lowermost to Upper Miocene. The richness ofdata (paleontology, isotope chronology, paleoclimate, etc.) it gives and the possibility of direct marine-continental correlations render this basin one of the more interesting ones in Western Europe. Alvalade basin is separated from the previous one by a barrier ofPaleozoic rocks. Two transgressions events (UpperTortonian and Messinian in age) are recorded. Active sedimentation may be correlated to Late Miocene tectonics events. In Algarve, chiefly marine units from Lower to Upper Miocene are well developped. The Lower unit (Lagos-Portimao Formation) is best exposed in Western Algarve, but desappears eastwards.

  • The Spatial Governance of the Lisbon's Metropolitan Region
THE VITAL CITY European Urban Research Association (EURA) 10th Anniversary Conference University of Glasgow, 12-14 September 2007 The Spatial Governance of the Lisbon’s Metropolitan Region Rui Florentino Portuguese Catholic University – Faculty of Engineering Faculdade de Engenharia da UCP, Estrada Octávio Pato 2635-631 Rio de Mouro, Lisboa – PORTUGAL e-mail: [email protected] Abstract The present discussion about the models of spatial governance in metropolitan areas, taken place in different cities all over Europe, is also a matter that concerns the Lisbon’s region. The paper aims to focus on urban indicators and the elements of spatial governance: levels and policies fragmentation, resources, democratic leadership, citizen participation, institutional relations and private-public cooperation on strategic projects. In the conclusions, the paper shows the possible innovation of the Lisbon case study, in a comparative analysis. Key words: spatial governance; Lisbon’s region; spatial indicators; comparative analysis. Brief CV Rui Florentino is an Assistant Professor at the Portuguese Catholic University – Faculty of Engineering, and PhD student at the Madrid’s Polytechnic University (Spain) – Spatial Planning and Urban Studies Department (Scholl of Architecture), since 2003. Professor José-Miguel Fernández Güell is the supervisor of the research work. 1. INTRODUCTION The metropolitan’s regions spatial evolution can be measured by a list of urban indicators. They follow the metropolitan public policies and some of them are used to analyse urban problems on different administrative sectors, like environment, transport or social and economic growth. Before the presentation of the Lisbon’s case study, it’s useful a comparative analysis of his spatial dynamics, with other metropolitan regions: we’ve chosen Madrid, Barcelona and Paris.

Explanatory Variables of Road Traffic in Portugal João Diogo Martins Lopes Barata Dissertation submitted to obtain the Master Degree in Industrial Engineering and Management Jury Chairman: Prof. Rui Miguel Loureiro Nobre Baptista Supervisor: Prof. Maria Margarida Martelo Catalão Lopes de Oliveira Pires Pina Member: Prof. João Manuel Marcelino Dias Zambujal de Oliveira November 2012 2 Acknowledgments I would like to thank my supervisors, Professor Margarida Catalão and Engineer Francisco Esteves, for their invaluable assistance throughout this dissertation. Without their insight, vision, effort, knowledge and moral support this dissertation would have been a difficult task. 3 Abstract During the last years Portuguese passenger and goods transport has been growing at a larger rate than GDP. Also, road traffic has increased its market share as compared with other transportation means. Several factors may justify this evolution, being some on transport supply while others on transport demand. For supply, improved accessibility conditions (modals, quality, time, and cost), while for demand socioeconomic factors (population, employment, GDP, income, fuel price) seem to play a key role. Although there exists several evidence concerning which factors have been shaping demand evolution, quantification lacks research. One difficulty for this task is the nonexistence of a unique database with Portuguese road traffic statistics. Also, available data do not have the same time horizon or statistical confidence. In this study a characterization of demand evolution based on fuel sales statistics is suggested, given that his information is available for broad time horizons and is territorially disaggregated. These statistics are also compatible with socioeconomical official ones published by official entities. Model results point out per capita values of gross domestic product, gross value added, compensation of employees and employment, alongside with fuel price, as key determinants for road traffic in Portugal.
