COURSE OBJECTIVES AND DESCRIPTION The objectives of the course are as follows: (1) to provide students with a comprehensive, theoretical introduction to the visual arts; (2) to develop skills of visual analysis; (3) to examine various media used by artists; (4) to introduce students to methods of interpretation; and (5) to develop skills in writing about art. Throughout the course we will keep in mind the following two statements: Pierre Auguste Renoir’s reminder that, “to practice an art, you must begin with the ABCs of that art;” and E.H. Gombrich’s insight that, “the form of representation cannot be divorced from its purpose and the requirements of the society in which the given language gains currency.” Among the themes and issues we will examine are the following: balance, shape and form, space, color, conventions, signs and symbols, representation, reception, and interpretation. To do this we will look at many different types of art produced in several historical epochs and conceived in a variety of media. Whenever possible we will examine original art objects. Art 150 is a foundation course that serves as an introduction for further work in studio art and art history. A three-hour course, Art 150 satisfies the fine arts requirement. Enrollment is limited to first- and second-year students who are not expected to have had any previous experience with either studio or art history.

    QUICK VIEW: Synopsis Kazimir Malevich was a Russian artist of Ukrainian birth, whose career coincided with the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 and its social and cultural aftermath. Malevich was the founder of the artistic and philosophical school of Suprematism, and his ideas about forms and meaning in art would eventually form the theoretical underpinnings of non- objective, or abstract, art making. Malevich worked in a variety of styles, but his most important and famous works concentrated on the exploration of pure geometric forms (squares, triangles, and circles) and their relationships to each other and within the pictorial space. Because of his contacts in the West, Malevich was able to transmit his ideas about painting to his fellow artists in Europe and the U.S., thus profoundly influencing the evolution of non-representational art in both the Eastern and Western traditions. Key Ideas • Malevich worked in a variety of styles, from Impressionism to Cubo-Futurism, arriving eventually at Suprematism - his own unique philosophy of painting and art perception. • Malevich was a prolific writer. His treatises on philosophy of art address a broad spectrum of theoretical problems and laid the conceptual basis for non-objective art both in Europe and the United States. • Malevich conceived of an independent comprehensive abstract art practice before its definitive emergence in the United States. The richness of the artistic explosion that Russia experienced between 1896 and 1932 does not permit here the treatment of the subject in its entire range. Hence, I limited myself to explore only the evolution of plastic arts from the emergence of non-objective art in 1915 up to the end of 1921 when ideology and theoretical reflection assume the consequences in apparently opposed, but in fact dialectically interdependent directions. The advent of non- objective art had been preceded by a glorious symbolist period as well as by an extraordinary cubo-futurist flowering which could by itself constitute the subject of another book.

    SYNOPSIS: Suprematism, the invention of Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was one of the earliest and most radical developments in abstract art. Its name derived from Malevich's belief that Suprematist art would be superior to all the art of the past, and that it would lead to the "supremacy of pure feeling or perception in the pictorial arts." Heavily influenced by avant-garde poets, and an emerging movement in literary criticism, Malevich derived his interest in flouting the rules of language, in defying reason. He believed that there were only delicate links between words or signs and the objects they denote, and from this he saw the possibilities for a totally abstract art. And just as the poets and literary critics were interested in what constituted literature, Malevich came to be intrigued by the search for art's barest essentials. It was a radical and experimental project which at times came close to a strange mysticism. Although the Communist authorities later attacked the movement, its influence was pervasive in Russia in the early 1920s, and it was important in shaping Constructivism, just as it has been in inspiring abstract art to this day. Key Ideas / Information • The Suprematists' interest in abstraction was fired by a search for the 'zero degree' of painting, the point beyond which the medium could not go without ceasing to be art. This encouraged the use of very simple motifs, since they best articulated the shape and flat surface of the canvases on which they were painted. (Ultimately, the square, circle, and cross became the group's favorite motifs.) It also encouraged many Suprematists to emphasize the surface texture of the paint on canvas, this texture being another essential quality of the medium of painting.

Kazimir Malevich’s Return to Figurative Painting Sam Unietis INTRODUCTION Kazimir Malevich is known throughout the world as one of the fathers of the abstract art movement, credited with the creation of geometric abstraction. Malevich was one of the key figures in the Russian Avant-Garde of the early 20th century, a cultural movement that involved artists, poets, musicians, composers, and writers. As varied as the Avant-Garde was with its different artists, styles, and movements, its primary goal was the liberation of art from the stifling confines of the “old culture.” The irreverent attitude that many of the Avant-Gardists held can be summarized in the Futurist manifesto A Slap in the Face of Public Taste (1912). “The past constricts. The Academy and Pushkin are less intelligible than hieroglyphics. Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, etc., etc., must be thrown overboard from the Ship of Modernity.”1 The forms of the past were no longer appropriate for the rapidly modernizing contemporary world. Art had come to a creative standstill because the preservation of classical forms and techniques had been continuously regarded as the only “true art.” Malevich was one of the artists who adamantly rejected the old forms of art in order to inspire a new artistic culture. His artistic styles grew and developed with the artists of the Avant-Garde: from Post-Impressionism, to the Neo- Primitivism of Natalia Goncharova and Mikhail Larionov, to Cubo-Futurism, to an absurdist style Malevich called “Fevralism”2, and finally Malevich took abstraction a step further to develop his most famous movement: Suprematism.

    Suprematist Architecture: a Plane Drawing Architectural History Thesis on Suprematist Architecture by Kazimir Malevich Delft University of Technology Fenna Regenboog April 2021 ABSTRACT The thesis examines the unbuilt Suprematist architecture through the architectural drawings made by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich (1878-1935) over the period 1923-24. By looking into the expression of non-objectivity in the built object, the study complements the current body of knowledge of Suprematism and architectural form development in the twentieth century. The research is constructed of a literature review and analysis of three architectural drawings by Malevich. Malevich envisioned an urban environment which form originates from Suprematist principles. Although the thesis has been able to establish the relation between Suprematism and the architectural form, there remains discussion to whether architectural principals or utopianism underlie the argument to why Suprematist architecture has not been constructed.     Head-First Through the Hole in the Zero: Malevich’s Suprematism, Khlebnikov’s Futurism, and the Development of a Deconstructive Aesthetic, 1908-1919 Abstract Suprematism’s attempt to move beyond representation in painting coincided with an attempt to move beyond Russian Futurist poetry and literature. I was an attempt to go ‘beyond zero’. In making that move, however, Kasimir Malevich, creator of Suprematism, needed to develop from Russian Futurism—particularly that of Velimir Khlebnikov—working within the Russian avant-garde. Through his painterly reliance on the square, Malevich not only worked in concert with Futurists such as Khlebnikov, but ultimately elaborated on a literary theory bound by the constraints of language. In essence, Malevich’s Suprematism could not get ‘beyond zero’ until Khlebnikov’s Futurism got him there. Inception At birth, there is nothing: a mind devoid of representational imagery. But children grow. Imagery mounts. Kasimir Malevich’s project throughout the majority of his artistic life was to re-find that original purity. ‘I have transformed myself in the zero of form’, wrote the artist in 1915, ‘and through zero have reached creation, that is, suprematism, the new painterly realism— nonobjective creation’.1 Malevich’s transformation—his ideological development—depended on contact with the Russian avant-garde and, specifically, the Russian Futurist poets of the early twentieth century.
