The announcement is set to cap more than a year of delibera- tion and negotiation that has at time pitted Trump against some of his closest aides and key American allies. Trump is facing a self-imposed May 12 deadline over whether to uphold the 2015 nuclear agreement, which he long has criticized. The president has signaled he will pull out of the pact by the deadline unless it is revised, but he faces intense pressure from European allies not to do so. “I will be announcing my decision on the Iran Deal tomorrow from the White House at 2:00pm,” Trump tweeted Monday. The president has been the subject of an intense lobbying effort by American allies to maintain the agreement, with British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson making a last-ditch appeal to the admin- istration in a visit to Washington this week. European leaders say that they are open to negotiating a side agreement with Iran, but the existing framework must remain untouched for that to happen. It is not immediately clear what Trump will announce Tuesday or whether he will announce the end of the deal or push for a renegotiation. Trump in October “decertified” the deal with Iran, but did not move to re-impose sanctions, known as a “snap-back.” On Monday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran would be willing not to abandon the nuclear deal even if the United States pulls out, providing the European Union offers guarantees that Iran would keep benefiting from the accord. Rouhani said that “what we want for the deal is that it’s pre- US abortion clinics face surge served and guaranteed by the non-Americans” — a reference to other signatories of the 2015 agreement. American Samoa Government OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE Nurses Week 2018 “Nurses Inspire, Innovate, Influence, and Comfort” Every doctor and every nurse share a common bond as they colaborate to render the best quality of healthcare service to every ill patient; the nurse assists in comfort- ing and caring for the patient and then proceeds to implement the Doctor’s treat- ment plan. Becoming a nurse is not an easy commitment because it transcends beyond the boundaries of a job and bothers more on being a calling because it strongly needs a special person to carry the title of “Nurse.” Nurses touch lives, in so many different ways, everyday. They watch suffering, pain and grief and they also witness the wonderment of new life or cures to the ill. Nurses inspire those they come into contact with, and they also are inspired by patients, the families and medical professionals. They become innovators as they bridge relationships between patients and doctors and being ill and getting well. They influence the quality of lives as they treat patients and educate them in areas gravitating to living healthier lives. It has been written that “Becoming a nurse is one of the most selfless acts a person can undertake. In a society of so many different races, cultures, customs, and beliefs, nurses are a universal gift to all, and the dedicated work that they do and kindness they deliver on a daily basis should serve as a reminder of the fundamental humanity inside us all.”

To all the Nurses in our territory, we thank you and salute you for all you do for our community.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. military offi cials have sought to ward off congres- sional efforts to address child- on-child sexual assaults on bases, even as they disclose that the problem is larger than previously acknowledged. Members of Con- gress expressed alarm and demanded answers after an Associated Press investiga- tion revealed that reports of sexual violence among kids on U.S. military bases and at Pen- tagon-run schools are getting lost in a dead zone of justice that often leaves both victim and offender without help. With at least three potential legislative fi xes being drafted, military offi cials have had a clear message during brief- ings with lawmakers and their C M staffs: We can handle this on Y K our own. It’s a strategy that began months ago, after the Pentagon received AP’s questions and well before offi cials under- stood the scope or severity of the problem. In March, AP documented nearly 600 sex assault cases among children and teens on U.S. bases worldwide over a 10-year period. Army crim- inal investigators have now added another 86 investiga- tions to the 223 they initially disclosed. The revision came after AP challenged data that suggested major installations in several states and overseas had no or only a few such sexual assault cases. Page 10 samoa news, Tuesday, May 8, 2018

Everyone in the district lives on the volcano. The people here are largely self-suffi cient and understand the risks of their location. Many cannot get homeowner’s insurance. Griffi th said that is the hardest part of this lifestyle — they won’t be able to recoup losses. Moments later, an explosion came from a nearby burning house. Puna has thick jungle as well as dark fi elds of lava rock from past eruptions. The gently sloping volcano dips from its summit to Puna’s white sand beaches and jagged sea cliffs. The region has macadamia nut farms and other agriculture along with multimillion-dollar homes with manicured lawns. Other houses are modest, sitting on small lots with old cars and trucks scattered about. Homeowners use rainwater- C M catch tanks and cesspools or Y K septic tanks. Many rely on solar power, and some live entirely off the electrical grid. Sam Knox, 65, who was born in Hawaii and now lives just a few hundred feet from a volcanic fi ssure, said he decided not to leave, despite the nearby explosions and the lava being hurled into the sky and fl owing across his neighbor’s property. “It was roaring sky high. It was incredible. ... Rocks were fl ying out of the ground,” he said. Much of the area fi lled with lava in just four hours. Kilauea (pronounced kill-ah- WAY’-ah) is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and has been erupting continuously since 1983.
