Methods

This study is based on field observationsand herbarium collections (spirit and dried) from the following Australian herbaria (AD, CANB, MEL and PERTH). Type specimensof all previously described taxa have been examined including those in overseas herbaria (BM, K, K-L, W). Measurementsgiven in descriptionsare fron living or spirit-preservedspecimens. Notes on distribution, habitat(particularly soil andplant association)and conservation status were derived fron our own field studiesand consultationswith A.P. Brown and R. Heberle.

Taxonomic history

Prasophyllum macrostachyumwas describedby Brown in 1810based on collections he made in swampsnear Albany, W.A. In 1840Lindley describedP. gracilebasedon matedalcollected by James Drummond, probably from near Perth. Six years later Endlicher (1846), determinedtwo Preiss collectionsfrom Westen Australia asrepresentative ofP. algrlcansR. Br andP. graclle, eventhough both collections are in faot the same species. Reichenbach(1871), after studying the same two collections, determined that the specimenattributed by Endl cherto P. nigricans was rnfact P. gracile Lindley and the secondspecinen, determinedby Endlicher as P. gracile, was a new taxon which he described as P. gracile var. ringens. George (1971), after a study of the types, made the new combination of P. macrostachyumvar. ringens and reduced P. gracile to a synonym of P. macrostqchyumvar. macrostqchyum. In a revision of the alliance,Bates (1989) describeda third species,P. calcicola, from matedalcollected on YorkePeninsula, S.A but which also occursin W.A. In the samepaper he elevatedP. macrostachlum var. ritge,?sto specific status. Clementsand Jones (in Clements 1989) independentlyreached a similar conclusionabout the statusof this taxon and renamedit as P. antennqtum.

A subsequentrc-assessment of the type collection of Pra.sophyllum gracile by one of us (MAC), housed in the Lindley Herbarium, Kew, showed that the specimenshave lateral sepalswith long, acicular terete apicesand this speciesis conspecific wlth P. ringens, and not P macrostachJumas previouslyinterpreted by George(1971) and Clements (1989). Accordingto article11of ths 1994 International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, gracile Lrndley has priority over P. ringens (H.G. Reichb.) R.J. Bates. Studies of the types of other speciesin the complex have confirmed that their taxonomicstatus agrees with that accordedto them by Clements( 1989),and show that the taxon rccently discoveredby Ron and PaulineHeberle is new. Subsequentfield studiesby the seniorauthor have allowed the comparisonoffresh materialof P. mqcrostachyum,P. gracile and the new taxon. These studieshave supportedthe recognitionof the three taxa detailed in this paper and have revealed further distinguishing charactersthat are not readily evident in herbarium specimens. The taxonomy and morphology of the three taxa is presentedhere. Prasophyllum calcicolo was the subjectof a recentstudy (Bates 1989) and is not describedhere but is included in the key.

Specimensexamined. WESTERN AUSTRALIA: Cuthbert 18-10-1988,Jones 3257 & Clements (cBG).

Distribution end hqbitat. Endemic to south-westernWestern Australia where known only from a degradedarea in a complexofcleared swampsto the westof Albany. The speciesgrows amonggrasses and herbs in black, peaty, alkaline soil.

Flowering period. Septemberto November.

Conseryationstatus. Rare, not conseryedand endangeredby drainageof swamps, land clearing and weed invasion. Recommendedas a Pdority I categoryon the Priodty Flora List of the Department of Conservationand Land Management.

Notes.Prasophyllum pauLine is similar to P. mqcrostqchyumblut is much more robust with stouter stemsand leaves, more numerous, crowded flowers in a subpyramidalspike, longer ovaries, shoder, broader lateral sepalsand a broadly elliptic-obovate,obtuse labellum with a much thicker-textured callus (prominent when viewed from the side). By conbast with P. paulinae, P. mqcrostachyumrs a very slenderspecies with fewer, widely separatedllowers in a linearspike and an ovatelabellum with a thinner-texturedcallus. Both taxa grow in swampyenvironments but P. macrostachyumocc\Es in wetter conditions than P. pauLinae, often growing with the baseof the plants subnerged.
