Muelleria 18: 99–109 (2003) A revisionary treatment of four species of Prasophyllum R.Br. (Orchidaceae) loosely related to P. correctum D.L.Jones David L. [email protected] Abstract The taxonomy of a small group of species loosely related to Prasophyllum correctum (Orchidaceae) is resolved. Four species are recognised in the group - P. correctum D.L.Jones, P. bagoensis D.L.Jones and two species newly described here (P. c rebriflorum D.L.Jones and P. incorrectum D.L.Jones). The taxonomic significance of the latter new species was resolved by an independent group of researchers (Orthia et al.) using a molecular technique, the results of this study being reported in an accompanying paper in this issue. Subsequent re-examination of morphological characters supports these findings. Introduction Prasophyllum R.Br. is a complex genus of Australian and New Zealand Orchidaceae which presents difficulties in identification for taxonomists, ecologists and orchid enthusiasts, mainly because of general similarity between many taxa and the difficulty of defining unique characters which can be used as a ready means of identification. Prasophyllum is the subject of continuing studies which have resulted in the description of new species (Bates 1989b, 1990; Jones 1991, 1994a, 1994b, 1996b, 1997), a review of Tasmanian species (Jones 1998) and the resolution of various complexes (Bates 1989a; Jones 1996a; Jones & Clements 1996). -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. Bates 38 Portmarnock Street, Fairview Park, South Australia 5126 Abstract Prasophyllum calcicola R. Bates from South and Western Australiais described as new; Prasophyllum macrostachyum R. Br. var. ringens (Reichb. f. ) A.S. George is raised to species rank as Prasophyllum ringens (Reichb. f.) R. Bates; Prasophyllum macrostachyum R. Br. is given an expanded description and the relationship of the three species discussed. Introduction Prasophyllum macrostachyum R. Br. was described in 1810 from material collected by Robert Brown at King George's Sound, Western Australia in December 1801. In 1840 J. Lindley named Prasophyllum gracile based on material inscribed "Swan River" by Drummond. P.gracile was recognised by A.S. George (1971)asa synonym of P. macrostachyum and is so treated here. H.G. Reichenbach (1871) described P. gracile var. ringens from plants collected by Preiss near York, Western Australia, and George (1971) made the combination P. macrostachyum var. ringens for this taxon, which is here raised to species status as Prasophyllum ringens. P. macrostachyum is basically a swamp plant while P. ringens favours dry ground. Both are endemic to Western Australia. Weber & Bates (1986) included South Australian material as Prasophyllum macrostachyum, but noted that these plants differed considerably from P. macrostachyum sensu stricto. This South Australian form ishere described as the new species Prasophyllum calcicola, from limestone country on Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas in South Australia and in coastal Western Australia. Thus, there are three species of this natural group occurring in Western Australia with one extending to South Australia. -

Macfarlane Western Australian Herbarium, Science Division, Department of Environment and Conservation, Western Australia. Address: DEC, Locked Bag 2, Manjimup WA 6258 Project aim This project was conceived to carry out a biological survey of a reserve forming part of the National Reserve System, to provide biodiversity information for reserve management and to contribute to taxonomic knowledge including description of new species as appropriate. Survey structure A team of scientists specialising in different organism groups each with a team of Earthwatch volunteer assistants, driver and vehicle, carried out the survey following individually devised field programs, over the 1 week period 5-9 May 2009. Science teams Five science teams, each led by one of the scientists, specialised on the following organism groups: Plants, Insects (Lepidoptera), Insects (Heteroptera), Vertebrates , Arachnids. Plants were collected by the Plants team and also by some of the animal scientists, particularly Celia Symonds, in order to accurately document the insect host plants. These additional collections were identified along with the other flora vouchers, and contribute to the flora results reported here.
