Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 Protected Flora List November 2019 What is Protected Flora? Protected flora are native plants or communities of native plants that have legal protection under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988. The Protected Flora List includes plants from three sources: plant taxa (species, subspecies or varieties) listed as threatened under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 plant taxa belonging to communities listed as threatened under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 plant taxa which are not threatened but require protection for other reasons. For example, some species which are attractive or highly sought after, such as orchids and grass trees, are protected so that the removal of these species from the wild can be controlled. For all listed species protection includes living (eg flowers, seeds, shoots and roots) and non-living (eg bark, leaves and other litter) plant material. Do I need a permit or licence? The handling of protected flora is regulated by the Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning (DELWP) to ensure that any harvesting or loss is ecologically sustainable. You must obtain a ‘Protected Flora Licence’ or Permit from one of the Regional Offices of DELWP if you want to collect protected native plants or if you are planning to do works or other activities on public land which might kill, injure or disturb protected native plants. In most cases, you do not require a Licence or Permit for works or activities on private land, although you may require a planning permit from your local council. -

LAST MEETING Attendance 62 Nicky Zurcher delighted us with a series of slides showing the magnificent mountain scenery of Switzerland and the plants that grow in these alpine con- ditions. In the higher altitudes the ground is free of snow for only-a few months each year yet a wealth of flowering plants, including orchids, thrive there. Ray Nash explained how to make a simple wooden press and absorbent paper holders for pressing orchid flowers. The resultant dried specimens will keep for a long time if stored carefully. -

Root, Advisor The effects of management on threatened and endangered species are difficult to discern, and yet, are vitally important for implementing adaptive management. The federally endangered Karner blue butterfly (Karner blue), Lycaeides melissa samuelis inhabits oak savanna or pine barrens, is a specialist on its host-plant, wild blue lupine, Lupinus perennis, and has two broods per year. The Karner blue was reintroduced into the globally rare black oak/lupine savannas of Ohio, USA in 1998. Current management practices involve burning 1/3, mowing 1/3, and leaving 1/3 of the lupine stems unmanaged at each site. Prescribed burning generally kills any Karner blue eggs present, so a trade-off exists between burning to maintain the habitat and Karner blue mortality. The objective of my research was to quantify the effects of this management strategy on the Karner blue. In the first part of my study, I examined several environmental factors, which influenced the nutritional quality (nitrogen and water content) of lupine to the Karner blue. My results showed management did not affect lupine nutrition for either brood. For the second brood, I found that vegetation density best predicted lupine nutritional quality, but canopy cover and aspect had an impact as well. -

Quindanning) INTERIM RECOVERY PLAN 2013–2017 January 2013 Department of Environment and Conservation Kensington Interim Recovery Plan for Caladenia sp. Quindanning FOREWORD Interim Recovery Plans (IRPs) are developed within the framework laid down in Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) Policy Statements Nos. 44 and 50. Note: CALM formally became the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) in July 2006. DEC will continue to adhere to these Policy Statements until they are revised and reissued. Plans outline the recovery actions that are required to urgently address those threatening processes most affecting the ongoing survival of threatened taxa or ecological communities, and begin the recovery process. DEC is committed to ensuring that Threatened taxa are conserved through the preparation and implementation of Recovery Plans (RPs) or IRPs, and by ensuring that conservation action commences as soon as possible and, in the case of critically Endangered taxa, within one year of endorsement of that rank by the Minister. This plan will operate from January 2013 to December 2017 but will remain in force until withdrawn or replaced. It is intended that, if the species is still ranked as Critically Endangered, this plan will be reviewed after five years and the need for further recovery actions assessed. This plan was given regional approval on 12 October 2012 and was approved by the Director of Nature Conservation on 30th January 2013. The provision of funds identified in this plan is dependent on budgetary and other constraints affecting DEC, as well as the need to address other priorities. -

LandCorp Denmark East Development Precinct Flora and Fauna Survey October 2016 Executive summary Introduction Through the Royalties for Regions “Growing our South” initiative, the Shire of Denmark has received funding to provide a second crossing of the Denmark River, to upgrade approximately 6.5 km of local roads and to support the delivery of an industrial estate adjacent to McIntosh Road. GHD Pty Ltd (GHD) was commissioned by LandCorp to undertake a biological assessment of the project survey area. The purpose of the assessment was to identify and describe flora, vegetation and fauna within the survey area. The outcomes of the assessment will be used in the environmental assessment and approvals process and will identify the possible need for, and scope of, further field investigations will inform environmental impact assessment of the road upgrades. The survey area is approximately 68.5 ha in area and includes a broad area of land between Scotsdale Road and the Denmark River and the road reserve and adjacent land along East River Road and McIntosh Road between the Denmark Mt Barker Road and South Western Highway. A 200 m section north and south along the Denmark Mt Barker Road from East River Road was also surveyed. The biological assessment involved a desktop review and three separate field surveys, including a winter flora and fauna survey, spring flora and fauna survey and spring nocturnal fauna survey. Fauna surveys also included the use of movement sensitive cameras in key locations. Key biological aspects The key biological aspects and constraints identified for the survey area are summarised in the following table. -

[email protected] Abstract The taxonomy of a small group of species loosely related to Prasophyllum correctum (Orchidaceae) is resolved. Four species are recognised in the group - P. correctum D.L.Jones, P. bagoensis D.L.Jones and two species newly described here (P. c rebriflorum D.L.Jones and P. incorrectum D.L.Jones). The taxonomic significance of the latter new species was resolved by an independent group of researchers (Orthia et al.) using a molecular technique, the results of this study being reported in an accompanying paper in this issue. Subsequent re-examination of morphological characters supports these findings. Introduction Prasophyllum R.Br. is a complex genus of Australian and New Zealand Orchidaceae which presents difficulties in identification for taxonomists, ecologists and orchid enthusiasts, mainly because of general similarity between many taxa and the difficulty of defining unique characters which can be used as a ready means of identification. Prasophyllum is the subject of continuing studies which have resulted in the description of new species (Bates 1989b, 1990; Jones 1991, 1994a, 1994b, 1996b, 1997), a review of Tasmanian species (Jones 1998) and the resolution of various complexes (Bates 1989a; Jones 1996a; Jones & Clements 1996). -
