Howard Government Retrospective II “To the brink: 1997 - 2001” Old Parliament House 14-15 November 2017 Howard Government Retrospective II Conference Broadcast Partner: 2 University of New South Wales Canberra To the brink: 1997 - 2001 The Howard Government Retrospective Conference Series he Liberal-National Party Coalition was elected Tto office on 2 March 1996 and continued in power until 24 November 2007. UNSW Canberra is holding a series of retrospective conferences to assess the performance of the four Howard Governments. Each event provides the basis for collections of essays contributed by principal participants, key public servants, leading commentators and notable scholars drawing on documents in the John Howard Collection held at the Defence Force Academy Library. The intention is for this series to become the ‘standard’ treatment of the Howard years. Contributors have been asked to focus critically on the Coalition’s policies and performance to reveal the Government’s shortcomings and failures. This commitment to a candid critique will attract the attention of the press and current-serving politicians, guaranteeing the volumes a substantial public profile at the time of their release. UNSW Press is the series publisher. The first conference and volume covered the 1996 election, the Coalition’s readiness for office, the main policy decisions and practical challenges of the first year of the Howard Government, including gun control and ministerial responsibility. The second conference and volume deals with the second and third years of the Coalition’s first term in office (1997-98) and most of its second term (1998-2001). Volume II will include coverage of Wik and native title, the Patricks waterfront dispute, the constitutional convention, the Coalition’s near defeat at the 1998 poll, the Government’s response to post-independence violence in East Timor, and the introduction of the GST.

  • How Is Rush Canadian?
Rush and Philosophy 2nd pages 3/11/11 1:56 PM Page 287 21 How Is Rush Canadian? DURRELL BOWMAN Given Canada’s relatively small population (twenty-one million in 1969, thirty-four million in 2009), many—but certainly not all—of the nation’s more ambitious musicians have pursued at least some of their career activities in the US and other foreign parts. Rush mainly demonstrates “Canadianness” by combining such British and American influences as progressive rock, hard rock, and indi- vidualism. However, the band has also included more specifically Canadian references across its long career. CanCon The Canadian government implemented specific content—or “CanCon”—regulations in 1971, and broadcasters were then required to include certain percentages of Canadian material. For music, at least two of a song recording’s four main categories of Music, Artist, Production, and Lyrics (“M-A-P-L”) must be “Canadian” according to citizenship or location. The interpretation of this changed after 1991, due to a “scandal” involving Bryan Adams failing to qualify as Canadian because of co-writing certain songs, such as “(Everything I Do) I Do it For You” ( Waking up the Neighbours and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves , both 1991), with such non-Canadians as Mutt Lange and Michael Kamen. (Spelling the word “neighbours” in the Canadian way apparently didn’t help.) The outcome is that even though Shania Twain similarly co- wrote the songs on Come on Over (1997) with her then-husband Mutt Lange and did not record any of this music in Canada, her album and its songs by that point qualified as Canadian.

  • Studio: an Introduction to the History and Culture of the Residential Recording Studio
The “Resort” Studio: An Introduction to the History and Culture of the Residential Recording Studio by Gabrielle Kielich A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, ON © 2015 Gabrielle Kielich Abstract Residential recording studios began to emerge in the 1960s. They were located in remote areas, featured onsite living accommodations, state-of-the-art technology, and recreational amenities. The “resort” studio conceptualizes the function and use of these studios as alternative workspaces. In this thesis, three case studies illuminate their development, ownership, and operation, and their intersection of work and living spaces in isolation. Resort studios were marked by diversity, but featured consistent design and working conditions. By combining the workplace and living space in relaxed atmospheres, resort studios blurred the distinction between work and leisure. However, their isolation from distractions created a concentrated creative work environment. The resort studio highlights music production as a social process beyond an industrial context, and draws attention to the confusion around musicians’ work as play. This thesis situates the resort studio within the continuum of studio configurations to contribute to a more complete version of studio history. ii Acknowledgements The past four years at Carleton have been among my most rewarding. My decision to return to university and change the direction of my career has brought with it transitions, challenges, excitement, and the support of many people. I would first like to thank my supervisor, Paul Théberge, for providing so much guidance on this project, from its very early days to full realization.

  • La Mustque Électroacoustique
QUE SAIS-JE? La mustque électroacoustique MICHEL CHION OUVRAGE DE TECHNIQUE MUSICALE PUBLIÉ AVEC LE CONCOURS DE NORBERT DUFOURCQ ET MARCELLE BENOIT A mon père.

8TH Art of Record Production Conference Rewriting the Rules of Production Université Laval, Quebec City, 12-14 July 2013 ABSTRACTS ANDRÉ PERRY “THE FIVE MINUTES OF MAGIC” Saturday, 13 July, 19:30 (interviewed by Gérald Côté) André Perry’s career path journeyed from Jazz and studio musician and author/composer, to recording engineer, record producer and studio designer/owner. He was also marketing consultant to retail chains. The scope of his music productions spanned from a diversity of projects, comprising of an international of artists as well as film sound tracks and ballet compositions. Perry produced ‘The Music of the Ceremonies of the 1976 Olympic Games’, Wilson Pickett’s last album I Want You, and John Lennon’s ‘Give Peace A Chance’ which stands out as the most enduring. In 1974, Perry conceived and designed his third and most famous recording facility, LE STUDIO (Morin Heights), which he operated with his life and business partner Yaël Brandeis until 1989. Tucked away from the established music centers, Le Studio Morin Heights, the first sophisticated ‘environmental recording studio’, was built using a revolutionary concept, blending creativity with innovative technology. It quickly became renowned for its refinement and for the nurturing of its clientele — the exclusive international club of the era’s finest musicians and artists which includes ASIA, Bryan Adams, the Bee Gees, David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Chicago, Julien Clerc, Roberta Flack, Corey Hart, Ian Hunter, Catherine Lara, Nazareth, The Police, Keith Richards, Rush, Sting, among many others. The duration of the recording session sometimes lasted several months and the groups and the studio staff became united in their efforts to create ‘The 5 minutes of Magic’.
