Welcome, and thank you for joining us for a week of amazing music and good company. The planning of ITEC 2016 has been guided by the theme “Foundations of Pedagogy”, which was the focus of our dear colleague, Kelly Thomas. His vision has provided the foundation of this conference, and we hope your week will be inspiring and instructional. Special thanks to my fellow ITEA Conference Committee members: Kent Eshelman, John Manning, Justin Benavidez, and Alex Lapins; to our Conference Manager, Genevieve Clarkson; to our Competitions Coordinator, Chris Combest; and to the students, faculty, and staff of the University of Tennessee - Knoxville for all their tireless work preparing for this week. KENYON WILSON ITEA Conference Coordinator • • • FROM THE SITE HOST... Welcome to Knoxville and welcome to the University of Tennessee-Knoxville School of Music on behalf of the Kelly Thomas chapter of ITEA! This has been a whirlwind two years since the 2014 ITEC of anticipation, achievement, grief, reorientation, restoration and celebration for our studio. SERTEC 2015, also hosted at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, was an unqualified success, and this studio was benefiting immeasurably from the leadership and wisdom of Kelly Thomas. The gifts he brought to his work could never be replaced, identically replicated or fully appreciated. The students hosting you this year for ITEC have worked tremendously hard in tragic and disorienting circumstances to assure you of a wonderful week filled with celebrations of our lost leader, fantastic music making, in-depth explorations of pedagogy, and general good cheer. Thank you for being a part of this week and welcome to ITEC 2016! ALEXANDER LAPINS, DM Assistant Professor of Tuba/Euphonium University of Tennessee-Knoxville 8 MAY 30TH - JUNE 4TH, 2016 - UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE KNOXVILLE LETTERS OF WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT OF ITEA... Welcome to ITEC 2016 at our home for the next several days, the stunning facilities here at the University of Tennessee- Knoxville! We are so grateful to our hosts here, Dr. Jeffrey Pappas and his staff and UT-Knoxville’s Tuba and Euphonium teacher and our friend Alex Lapins, who has (in my old Navy lingo) “hit the deck with both feet running” in preparation for this event. Special thanks go to our Conference Committee Chair, Kenyon Wilson and his staff, including our manager Genevieve Clarkson, and to all of you as well, who have decided to share part of your lives with all of us in the International Tuba Euphonium Association. Many, many people have worked hard here at the University and in ITEA to provide you a week of inspiration, pride, and renewal, and a chance to recharge your low brass batteries! We will hear some amazing performances from artists around the world performing a huge range of repertoire. The clinicians and special presentations are a don’t miss and we have our wonderful exhibitors rolling out the newest innovations in instruments and accessories, as well as the opportunity to peruse stacks of music from our publishers. Each night there is a special feature concert, but please take the time to go through our beautiful program and plan to attend as many events as you can. Support these people who have put hours into their craft to present the work they love. During the meal times and our special barbeque night, and at the after hours events, you’ll be able to visit, meet some heroes and some old friends while making many more NEW friends. This is a time for sharing ideas, passion for our instruments and for honoring many of those who are responsible for inspiring us and helping create and sustain the ITEA we love now. Please do NOT miss the special banquet Thursday night when we celebrate and honor ITEA’s award winners, and pay tribute to those to whom we bid farewell since our last ITEC in Indiana. Naturally, we remember and honor our dear, departed friend and colleague, Kelly Thomas, who was taken from us way too early, but left us with an amazing legacy. Many of the events and extras you’ll enjoy this week were a direct result of Kelly’s vision for this ITEC many months ago. HIs friends and students have picked up the reins to help guide his dream to this point in our history, and you are about to enjoy the fruits of his (and their) labors. Have a great week and take time to thank all of those folks who have worked and will continue to work all week to provide you with this amazing UT-Knoxville ITEC!! Respectfully, MARTIN D. “MARTY” ERICKSON President; International Tuba Euphonium Association (ITEA) 2016 INTERNATIONAL TUBA EUPHONIUM CONFERENCE 9 LETTERS OF WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE UT KNOXVILLE SCHOOL OF MUSIC... Welcome to Tennessee! We are thrilled to have you in Knoxville and at our beloved University of Tennessee. On behalf of all of my colleagues and students in our School of Music, we hope you enjoy our town, campus and our magnificent Natalie L. Haslam Music Center. As you know, bringing the 2016 International Tuba Euphonium Conference to UT was due to the energy, vision and passion our dearly departed colleague, Dr. Kelly Thomas, had for the organization and his new musical home. Although not here physically to enjoy this time of concerts, workshops, networking and renewing old and making new friendships, Kelly’s dream is becoming a reality. My thanks to everyone with the ITEC Board of Directors for staying the course and for our new colleague, Dr. Alex Lapins, for taking over the important task of leading the local effort to make this conference possible. As you participate in this conference, it is my hope that the renewal each of us finds in these experiences stays with you long after you leave and head back home. One of the many beauties of our intoxicating art is that the inspiration, strength and support each of us provides one another through our numerous and various interactions has the unique ability – whether or not we are recognizing it at the time – to make everyone better. Enjoy the convention. I’m certain it will have a lasting impact on everyone! DR. • Transantiquity
TransAntiquity TransAntiquity explores transgender practices, in particular cross-dressing, and their literary and figurative representations in antiquity. It offers a ground-breaking study of cross-dressing, both the social practice and its conceptualization, and its interaction with normative prescriptions on gender and sexuality in the ancient Mediterranean world. Special attention is paid to the reactions of the societies of the time, the impact transgender practices had on individuals’ symbolic and social capital, as well as the reactions of institutionalized power and the juridical systems. The variety of subjects and approaches demonstrates just how complex and widespread “transgender dynamics” were in antiquity. • An Analysis of Twentieth-Century Flute Sonatas by Ikuma Dan, Hikaru
Flute Repertoire from Japan: An Analysis of Twentieth-Century Flute Sonatas by Ikuma Dan, Hikaru Hayashi, and Akira Tamba D.M.A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Daniel Ryan Gallagher, M.M. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2019 D.M.A. Document Committee: Professor Katherine Borst Jones, Advisor Dr. Arved Ashby Dr. Caroline Hartig Professor Karen Pierson 1 Copyrighted by Daniel Ryan Gallagher 2019 2 Abstract Despite the significant number of compositions by influential Japanese composers, Japanese flute repertoire remains largely unknown outside of Japan. Apart from standard unaccompanied works by Tōru Takemitsu and Kazuo Fukushima, other Japanese flute compositions have yet to establish a permanent place in the standard flute repertoire. The purpose of this document is to broaden awareness of Japanese flute compositions through the discussion, analysis, and evaluation of substantial flute sonatas by three important Japanese composers: Ikuma Dan (1924-2001), Hikaru Hayashi (1931- 2012), and Akira Tamba (b. 1932). A brief history of traditional Japanese flute music, a summary of Western influences in Japan’s musical development, and an overview of major Japanese flute compositions are included to provide historical and musical context for the composers and works in this document. Discussions on each composer’s background, flute works, and compositional style inform the following flute sonata analyses, which reveal the unique musical language and characteristics that qualify each work for inclusion in the standard flute repertoire. These analyses intend to increase awareness and performance of other Japanese flute compositions specifically and lesser- known repertoire generally.
