SPECIAL NON-SUBSCRIPTION CONCERTS M

The 125th season will offer a greater wealth of special concerts and also some changes. Chief Con- ductor of the Czech Philharmonic Semyon Bychkov will prepare the traditional opening concerts with star soloists: pianist Daniil Trifonov and trumpet player Selina Ott in Shostakovich’s Con- certo for piano, trumpet, and strings. The second half of the programme will feature Mahler’s 5th Symphony. A new event is the Velvet Revolution Concert, which will be held on two evenings, establishing a tradition that will become part of the special concerts of the Czech Philharmonic. These concerts will take the place of the former Concerts for Students’ Day by the Czech Student Philharmonic. Semyon Bychkov is preparing a programme connected with the stirring history of the 20th century – Kabeláč’s Mystery of Time and Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony. Two con- certs in December will highlight the Advent atmosphere – Haydn’s oratorio The Creation under the baton of and with outstanding singers. There will be the traditional triptych of events for the arrival of the new year: the Special New Year’s Eve Dress Rehearsal, the New Year’s Eve Afternoon Concert, and the New Year’s Day Concert prepared by Principal Guest Conductor Tomáš Netopil with the Czech Philharmonic and soloists. The season will close with the traditional Open Air Concert on Hradčany Square. It is also becoming a tradition that the concert is dedicated to the memory of Jiří Bělohlávek.

This series is also dedicated in part to the complete performing of the quartets by Ludwig van Beethoven – at two concerts, the famed Hagen Quartet and the Pražák Quartet will play the master’s exceptional works. In this series, the name of cellist Clemens Hagen will appear with striking frequency. This wonderful artist will be appearing no less than three times – first with his own ensemble, then as a member of the Vienna Piano Trio, and finally in Schubert’s Quintet with two cellos, together with the Wihan Quartet. Musica Florea led by Marek Štryncl will accompany soprano Martina Janková in a programme of arias from sacred oratorios by Giovanni Bononcini and Georg Friedrich Händel. Another attractive programme will be the appearance by the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble with Jan Mráček and Karel Untermüller in Mozart’s concertante.

EARLY EVENING CONCERTS

HP

The Prague Philharmonia Wind Quintet will introduce itself at the beginning of this series, traditionally set in the Suk Hall. The concert is devoted in part to the birthday of composer Zdeněk Šesták. Among the other artists who are well known to us is the harpsichordist of Iranian origin living in Prague, Mahan Esfahani, who is joining with gamba player Hille Perl in preparing a programme largely devoted to the music of the Bach family. In accordance with tradition, one of the concerts will be reserved for laureates of important Czech competitions. Perhaps something of a surprise for the audience will be the appearance by cellist Camille Thomas, whose partner at the piano will be Lukáš Klánský. Finally, it is worth mentioning the appearance of the Czech Philharmonic Winds led by Ondřej Vrabec.
