The areas of activity at the department:

The Plant breeding department has been working since 1950s and it still stands as a leading department of the Scientific Research Institute of Crop Husbandry. The department’s activity was officially started with: The program on modernization of the Institute- act #3 from March 29, 2009 – (was signed by the Agrarian Science Center) and also with the act # 7/5 from March 31, 2009 – (was signed by the Scientific Research Institute of Crop Husbandry). Currently, there are working 29 employees: 14 researchers, 9 candidates and 1 PhD. The department works in accordance with the acts on breeding of wheat, barley, leguminous and corn. Researchers are closely cooperating not only internally but also externally with the Genetically Resources Institute of NAS (The National Academy of Sciences). The department’s research fields: started from 1963 is genetics and breeding of the grainy and leguminous plants. The breeding works on grainy plants passed from 3 stages: 1950-1956; 1956-1970; 1970- present;. In the first stage of researches: the major aim was collecting and studying of the local samples of plants. During the second stage: The extensive and tall varieties of wheat have been created. The following wheat sorts are regionalized: VQ-5(1965) in Tajikistan; Agbugda 13 (1956), Galaba (1969) in Azerbaijan. Started from 1970, everything was changed. The unique complex breeding program was created by academician Calal Aliyev and thus this document conveys a unique notion in it, which is about collaboration. Collaboration among breeders, physiologists, technologists and also others... So, during these years, there have been created 130 grainy and grainy- leguminous sorts of plant and given to the State Commission on Testing and Protection of the Achievements of Selection. The list of regionalized sorts: from the total number of 67 sorts- 26 wheat, 14 durum wheat, 12 barley, 4 corn, 2 beans, 5 peas, 1 rye, 1 vələmir, 1st triticale, 3 beans, 1 lupine and 1 peanut. The indicator of percentage for the fields of the above listed plants is equals to 80%. Here, we carry out researches by taking into account the major factors, as a climatic diversity and also the global climatic changes. So, the below listed things is what we do:

• Acceleration of the breeding process by utilizing the achievements of breeding world;

• Creation of highly productive, qualitative and environmentally adaptive varieties of forages, by the way of hybridization and selecting the local and introduced germs of plasma.

•Boosting of sustainability of plants against the biotic/abiotic stress factors.

• Conduction of the sort tests for the purposes of determination of plastic ones, which are very weak in response to the soil and climatic variety conditions.

The germ plasmas

The locally created sorts of durum and soft wheat hybridize year by year for the purposes of enrichment of the germ plasmas with the introduced varieties of wheat which are grown under various geographical conditions.

Sustainability

Today’s world is nothing rather than surviving on the earth, as there are various factors, like a biotic: pests and diseases/abiotic: warming, radiation, salinization and drought - influence on the productivity of plants and therefore it’s aimed to find out a stress tolerant types of genes.

The Genetics aspects

1) Determination of genes that controls the quantity and qualitative features of soft and durum wheat varieties, determination of chromosomes which carries that genes, creation of gene pass based on the major features of genotypes 2) Determination of donors that provides wheat with: tolerance to stress factors, sustainability to pests and diseases and also with the highly productivity; 3) By taking into account that, Azerbaijan belongs to the organic short photoperiod region, it’s necessary to study wheat in accordance with the Ppd gene system and their use for the purposes of getting the rapid growing productive sorts of wheat; 4) Researches on wheat’s way of life, determination of genotypes and their use in breeding; 5) The Broad use of hybridization in reconstruction of the wheat genome; 6) The genetic analysis of features that determines the botanical classification of sort’s difference and identification of genotypes which can be find in a single variety difference.

Productivity

The productivity notion takes an important place in breeding. The newly created line passes from two phases, which are visual assessment and the elements of productivity. The major thing here’s the genetically strength and positive traits of recurrent and recipient forms. The hybridization components that could be resulted in creation of the highest transgressed forms are selected in breeding.

Quality

Boosting the crop quality of plant can be a tricky problem. The crop’s quality depends on the various factors, like a biological, agro technical, genetics and the proper organization of field. The primary duty of lab is: to analyze the quality of grainy and grainy-leguminous plants and also participate in selection of the highest qualitative genotypes and parent forms. The physical features of grain: color, being like a glass, its form, the level of damage with pests, the weight of 1000 crops, the net weight; The biochemical features: the level of protein and quantity of oils; The techno features- sedimentation, the physical characteristics of dough, the quality of bread and macaroni. The biochemical genetics: determination of genes that controls the quality, their inherit transition and use in selection as a genetic marker of quality.

The environmentally friendly harvest

The productive varieties of some agricultural plants are very sensitive any diseases and it’s really harmful for environment as it results in utilizing a large amount chemicals for the purposes of growing these plants, thus the quality indicators gets down as a result of actions, but provision of the genetic tolerance of plants ends up in minimal use of chemicals and therefore to produce the utterly organic plants.
