CESAR AUGUSTO REYES PEÑA RECTOR OF THE UNIVERSIDAD NACIONAL DE PIURA The Rector of the Universidad Nacional de Piura is pleased to welcome all the students, professors and researchers interested in making studies in our institution. It is really satisfying for UNP to enjoy alliances with international universities which benefit our students. In the same way, we expect to contribute to the development of foreign students interested on taking a specialization with us. Be sure that you will feel comfortable with the treatment of our personnel, as we compromise to provide a personalised service and the doors of the Rectorate will remain open. Guide for foreign students 3 HOW TO OPERATE AN ACADEMIC STAY AT THE UNIVERSIDAD NACIONAL DE PIURA The process starts by making contact with an authority of your home university to get oriented or directly with our Oficina Central de Cooperación Técnica in the UNP. Contact with us can be made through our email ([email protected]), personally in our campus in Urb. Miraflores-Castilla-Piura or calling our number (51) (073) 342 855. From that moment, the necessary advice will be given to fulfil the academic wills. After this process, the Formulario de Movilidad Académica should be filled and given attaching the next information: Copy of a valid ID card or passport. 01 color photo Copy of an accident insurance Copy of your academic record Curriculum Vitae Work plan of what is expected to achieve Then, send it to: [email protected]. Form that moment, all the information regarding the exchange will be given. It is important to consider that our institution calendar is formed by two semesters: First semester: March – July Second semester: August – December If applying to the first semester or the whole year, the application should be made between September and the first 15 days of December of the previous year. In case of looking forward to making studies in the second semester, the deadline will be set on the 31 of May of the same year. In about a month, the applicant will know if the request has been accepted. If it is the case, the procedure can get started. It will be useful to get in touch with the Oficina Central de Cooperación Técnica to know all the benefits of the university dining hall, the steps to follow to sign up in a course or how to process a stay in the residence. Guide for foreign students 4 Dining hall The UNP students have access to a dining hall with an economic menu if it is compared with any restaurant out of the campus. Also, the campus is provided with kiosks and restaurants with a menu which cost around 7 nuevos soles. Attention is given during the whole day. Library The library system in UNP is formed principally by the main library, located in the campus. Also, each faculty or lab is provided with a specified library service and an online database. NATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS PERÚ Perú, officially Republic of Perú, is a country located in the occidental and intertropical lands of South America. Its northern frontiers are shared with Ecuador and Colombia, it limits in the east with Brazil, south west with Bolivia and Chile can be found in the south. The coastal area, in the west, is bathed by the Pacific Ocean. Its surface of 1 285 216 km2 make it the third largest country in South America. Its territory is the most diverse of the continent: valleys, highlands and high peaks covered by snow in Los Andes share territory with the enigmatic desertic coast and the sensational and untapped Amazonas rainforest. Perú is also one of the most biological diverse countries in the world and with countless mineral resources. Guide for foreign students 5 The ancient Perú is the cradle of Andean civilisation, leaving remarkable archaeological remains, making the country the most important territory in cultural and historic heritage in Latin America. The mother tongue of most of the inhabitants is Spanish, but a significant number of Peruvians can speak some other native languages, being Quechua the most important. Perú is considered and emerging country, with a high human development index. It is considered by many as the Latin American country with the fastest development. Among its economic activities, exportation, fishing, mining and manufacture are highlighted. However, the best known of the country is its incomparable gastronomy. It is divided in 24 departments and the constitutional province of El Callao. The government and the judicial power are set in Lima, the capital and most populated city with more than 9 million habitants. DEPARTMENT OF PIURA Piura is a department located in the northwest of the country. It collides with the Pacific Ocean in the west, department of Lambayeque in the south, Cajamarca in the west, Tumbes in the northwest and Ecuador in the north. Due to its proximity with the Ecuadorian line, Piura enjoys a warm climate during almost the whole year. The median temperature is 26 °C. The coast presents tropical climate in yunga area and tropical savanna climate at sea level. This climate is also known as dry tropical or dry Ecuadorian forest. The maximum temperature reached in summer rounds 38 °C and the minimum 15 °C. CITY OF PIURA Piura is also known as the City of hospitality, as their habitants are so well coming with visitors. It is also named as the City of the eternal sun because of its sunny and warm days. Also, some people talk about is as the City of algarrobos, a dry tropical forest tree that is common to see in the area and creates gorgeous landscapes all around the city. Guide for foreign students 6 Plaza de Armas de la Ciudad The Plaza de Armas is one of the oldest and most beautiful squares in the country. Its design is a squared Spanish style with a gorgeous cathedral built in the colonial times. Is is surrounded by many autochthonous trees such as tamarindos and ficus. There can also be found several malls in the city such as Open Plaza, Plaza del Sol, Real Plaza, Plaza de la Lina etc. also restaurants, sport areas and many leisure facilities. Piura is connected to the rest of the country by its main motorway, the Carretera Panamericana, and its airport, Aeropuerto Internacional Capitán FAP Guillermo Concha Ibérico. Managing 2011 data, Piura’s population is around 1 784 551 habitants (6% of national total), being the second most populated region only behind Lima. Nearly three over four parts of its population is urban and gender distribution is equilibrated. HOW TO REACH PIURA FROM LIMA? In Perú, international flights land at the Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez, in Lima. Once there, another plane should be taken to Piura, to the airport Capitán FAP Guillermo Concha Ibérico (PIU). It is a small airport recently reshaped, located in the Castilla district, 5km from the city. It operates many daily flights from and to Lima that last around 1h15. Guide for foreign students 7 A bus can also be taken from Lima, as many transport services are available for users. The trip will last around 14 hours. It is recommended to use the vehicles that are inside the area of the airport as they are authorized. The service will cost around 3.00 USD, around 10 nuevos soles. When getting to the UNP, once in the Rectorado building, the contact will be made with the Oficina de Cooperación Técnica. The office will help with finding housing and maintenance if there aren’t any options yet. The national currency is the nuevo sol, but many malls accept payments in dollars. There are many exchange houses around the city, but the office will make a recommendation about which of them may be the most secure.
