The Green Sheet and Opposition to American Motion Picture Classification in the 1960s By Zachary Saltz University of Kansas, Copyright 2011 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Film and Media Studies and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. ________________________________ Chairperson Dr. John Tibbetts ________________________________ Dr. Michael Baskett ________________________________ Dr. Chuck Berg Date Defended: 19 April 2011 ii The Thesis Committee for Zachary Saltz certifies that this is the approved version of the following thesis: The Green Sheet and Opposition to American Motion Picture Classification in the 1960s ________________________________ Chairperson Dr. John Tibbetts Date approved: 19 April 2011 iii ABSTRACT The Green Sheet was a bulletin created by the Film Estimate Board of National Organizations, and featured the composite movie ratings of its ten member organizations, largely Protestant and represented by women. Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968.

BECTU History Project - Interview No. 221 [Copyright BECTU] Transcription Date: Interview Dates: 8 November 1991 Interviewer: John Legard Interviewee: Teddy Darvas, Editor Tape 1 Side A (Side 1) John Legard: Teddy, let us start with your early days. Can you tell us where you were born and who your parents were and perhaps a little about that part of your life? The beginning. Teddy Darvas: My father was a very poor Jewish boy who was the oldest of, I have forgotten how many brothers and sisters. His father, my grandfather, was a shoemaker or a cobbler who, I think, preferred being in the cafe having a drink and seeing friends. So he never had much money and my father was the one brilliant person who went to school and eventually to university. He won all the prizes at Gymnasium, which is the secondary school, like a grammar school. John Legard: Now, tell me, what part or the world are we talking about? Teddy Darvas: This is Budapest. He was born in Budapest and whenever he won any prizes which were gold sovereigns, all that money went on clothes and things for brothers and sisters. And it was in this Gymnasium that he met Alexander Korda who was in a parallel form. My father was standing for Student's Union and he found somebody was working against him and that turned out to be Alexander Korda, of course the family name was Kelner. They became the very, very greatest of friends. Alex was always known as Laci which is Ladislav really - I don't know why.

  • Media Translations of Fantasy Worlds
A World of Difference: Media Translations of Fantasy Worlds Rachel Louise Mizsei Ward Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Film, Television and Media Studies May 2013 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there-from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. Rachel Mizsei Ward University of East Anglia Abstract The modern consumer has access to a massively complex entertainment world. Many of the products available reveal a visible movement of popular fantasy worlds between different media. This transmedia process creates a strong link between film, merchandising and games; with all of these mediums borrowing from each other. This borrowing takes various forms, from licensed adaptations to unofficial copying of ideas, settings and characters as well as exploiting the different aesthetics and techniques of different media. Much of the scholarship on transmedia concentrates on storytelling, where a single overarching narrative unfolds over several different media. This thesis will move away from storytelling to consider how culture producers borrow the aesthetics, narratives and fantasy worlds from other sources, including computer games. This borrowing happens because it enables them to use transmedia functionality to gain market share from an already established audience who have a vested interested in, and enthusiasm for, an established world. Most of this borrowing happens around specific genres – especially fantasy, science fiction and horror. These genres are particularly wide-ranging and emphasise the possibilities of worldbuilding, making then good sources for multi-media franchises.

DOCUMENT RESUME ED 435 403 IR 057 553 AUTHOR Halliday, Blane TITLE An Examination of Essential Popular Music Compact Disc Holdings at the Cleveland Public Library. PUB DATE 1999-05-00 NOTE 94p.; Master's Research Paper, Kent State University. Information Science. Appendices may not reproduce adequately. PUB TYPE Dissertations/Theses (040) EDRS PRICE MF01/PC04 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS *Audiodisks; Discographies; *Library Collection Development; *Library Collections; *Optical Disks; *Popular Music; *Public Libraries; Research Libraries; Tables (Data) IDENTIFIERS *Cleveland Public Library OH ABSTRACT In the 1970s and early 1980s, a few library researchers and scholars made a case for the importance of public libraries' acquisition of popular music, particularly rock music sound recordings. Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance.

  • An Impossible Task? Scripting the Chilian Club
Chapter 5 An Impossible Task? Scripting The Chilian Club Andrew Spicer Introduction This chapter will explore the multifarious drafting and redrafting of scripts and full screenplays for a film based on George Shipway’s controversial political satire The Chilian Club (1971), the story of a quartet of elderly assassins – former army officers – who believe they are saving their country from Communist subversion. Although The Chilian Club was never produced, ten complete adaptations were written involving four different hands – writer- directors Peter Collinson and Mike Hodges, Benny Green, the well- known radio scriptwriter and broadcaster, and Michael Klinger who was to have been the film’s producer – over a six- year period (1972–7). As discussions of screenwriting often emphasize (Rilla 1973: 12–16; Cook and Spicer 2008: 213–16; Maras 2009: 11–15), it is important to establish what is understood to be the object of study. Thus, although there will be a detailed examination of the scripts themselves and the aesthetic difficulties of realizing Shipway’s novel, the chapter will also pay close attention to the fluctuating nature of the collaborations involved and contextual factors that shaped them. This was a period of exceptional volatility and uncertainty in the British film industry, and Klinger, as an independent producer, faced extreme difficulties that had a direct bearing on his attempts to film The Chilian Club. Figure 5.1 The strapline for Klinger News with a typical headline; courtesy of Tony Klinger 72 Andrew Spicer My analysis of the deeper forces at work in attempting to realize The Chilian Club will be based on hitherto unused material in the University of the West of England’s Michael Klinger Papers that shed light on the convoluted relationships between screenwriters, distributors, potential investors, public bodies and large corporations, all pivoting round the figure of Michael Klinger as the producer.
