  • Death, Beauty, and Iconoclastic Nostalgia: Precarious Aesthetics and Lana Del Rey
Death, beauty, and iconoclastic nostalgia: Precarious aesthetics and Lana Del Rey Arild Fetveit NECSUS 4 (2): 187–207 DOI: 10.5117/NECSUS2015.2.FETV Abstract The obsolescence of analogue media along with a rapid succession of digital formats has sensitised us to the mortality of media. It has also spawned what Dominik Schrey has called ‘a golden age of nostalgia for these allegedly “dead media”’, now explored by visual artists, filmmakers, cinematographers, Do-It- Yourself enthusiasts, Polaroid fans, Instagram users, music video directors and others. Since the mid-1990s a partially-iconoclastic impulse focused on exploring the mortality of media materials has often taken the form of medium-specific noise. However, in recent years alternative strategies that counteract clarity, involving iconoclastic disruptions of the process of mediation, supported by a host of degrading techniques and strategies that thicken and foreground the medium and its materiality, have partially replaced uses of medium-specific noise. Cultural analysts awake to these and related developments have responded with a series of productive interventions. Drawing on many of these, I propose a media aesthetic approach where the disruptions in question are conceived as involving instances of precarious mediation to be examined within a precarious aesthetics. The music videos of Lana Del Rey effectively articulate ways in which precarious mediation is used in contemporary popular culture. In many of her music videos, like Summertime Sadness (2012) and Summer Wine (2013), the precarious mediation is given a nostalgic inflection, where an ambiguous yearning for the past is imbricated with cunning attempts to perfect imperfec- tion. This nostalgia appears iconoclastic on the level of mediation as well as in its yearning for the past greatness of America.

MICKEY SPILLANE, 1918-2006 On March 9, 1918, in Brooklyn, New York, Frank Morrison Spillane was born on March 9, 1918, in Brooklyn, to parents Anne and John Spillane. Although he would be known as Morrison by his teachers, it was his father's nickname for him which would endure: Mickey. As a youth, he excelled at football and swimming. It was during his high school years that he began his writing career, with his first piece published shortly after graduation. Early in his career, he would often have his work published under pseudonyms, Frank Morrison being one of them. After high school, he briefly attended Kansas State Teachers College, spending most of his time there playing football. After college, he returned to New York. He worked at Gimbel's then joined the staff of writers at Marvel Comic Books, penning detective and supehero stories. When WW II broke out, Mickey enlisted in the Air Force but remained stateside and out of the action. Stationed in Mississippi, he met Mary Ann Pearce, who, in 1945, became his first wife. They later had four children, Kathy, Ward, Michael and Caroline. After the war, he returned to New York. He bought a plot of land and decided to build a new home on it. To do so required a thousand dollars, a thousand dollars more than he had. So, in order to raise the money, he decided to write a book. He based it on a comic book character called Mike Danger he had created early in his career. That book was I, The Jury.

  • Story Structure - for New Screenplay + Time-Line
DEAD END Story structure - for new screenplay + Time-line Synopsis American jazz musician, John Garrett is in the final days of his life. An ex-patriot living in Sweden since the 1960s, he has enjoyed a unique position as a beloved musician, both locally and internationally. His many years on the road as a younger man came at a cost to his family. Married twice, he fathered a son and two daughters. Now, as adults, each child struggles with John’s pending death. The audience is carried along in a series of flashbacks that build and reveal the story’s complex conflicts and psychological unfolding. We also witness the highly contrasting differences between Sweden and America in this multi-cultural family with regard to perceptions of wealth, prestige, talent and self-image. At the same time, we share the individual emotional strain that the family members face – each in their own distinct way – as John rapidly fades, leaving them desperate for closure. The use of internal dialogs and shifting time frames make it possible to dive deeply into these personalities. A gripping psychological tale emerges to reveal the emotionally hungry child hidden within each adult. hodgearts.com [email protected] Stockholm + 46 76 224 0375 Rev 1.3 - 011115 DEAD END Story structure - for new screenplay + Time-line Overview (Story flow – Treatment) Act I Scene 1 Scene 2 Scene 3 Scene 4 Scene 5 Scene 6 Scene 7 Scene 8 Doctor’s office Lawyer’s office Train/Cafe/Family home Train Home Kina’s apartment Home Home John Garrett and his John goes into The siblings get Astrid meets a German Åsa and Robert have Astrid arrives in Kina and Astrid drive Åsa suggests they all daughter Åsa visit Stockholm to meet his ready to gather woman on the train to invited Björn and his Stockholm and she to pick up Anders and stay for dinner.
