Regional Oral History Off ice University of California The Bancroft Library Berkeley, California Richard B. Gump COMPOSER, ARTIST, AND PRESIDENT OF GUMP'S, SAN FRANCISCO An Interview Conducted by Suzanne B. Riess in 1987 Copyright @ 1989 by The Regents of the University of California Since 1954 the Regional Oral History Office has been interviewing leading participants in or well-placed witnesses to major events in the development of Northern California, the West, and the Nation. Oral history is a modern research technique involving an interviewee and an informed interviewer in spontaneous conversation. The taped record is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. The resulting manuscript is typed in final form, indexed, bound with photographs and illustrative materials, and placed in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and other research collections for scholarly use. Because it is primary material, oral history is not intended to present the final, verified, or complete narrative of events. It is a spoken account, offered by the interviewee in response to questioning, and as such it is reflective, partisan, deeply involved, and irreplaceable. All uses of this manuscript are covered by a legal agreement between the University of California and Richard B. Gump dated 7 March 1988. The manuscript is thereby made available for research purposes. All literary rights in the manuscript, including the right to publish, are reserved to The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley. No part of the manuscript may be quoted for publication without the written permission of the Director of The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley.

  • A Last Talk with Leslie Mcfarlane
A Last Talk with Leslie McFarlane DA VID PALMER L eslie McFarlane, one of the world's most popular children's authors and a prolific contributor to Canadian popular culture, died on September 6th, 1977, in Whitby, Ontario. Born at Carleton Place, Ontario, in 1902, he worked as a reporter for several newspapers in Ontario and Massachusetts, and from the twenties to the forties contributed hundreds of stories and serials to the "better pulps" and "sn~ooth-paper magazines" (as Maclean's explained in 1940) in Canada, the U.S.A. and Great Britain. In this period he also published two novels, and under various pseudonyms wrote numerous children's adventure books for the Stratemeyer Syndicate of New Jersey (home of the Bobbsey Twins), including the first Hardy Boys books. In the late thirties and forties he wrote dozens of radio plays, and in 1944, after two years with the Department of Munitions and Supply, he was invited by John Grierson to join the National Film Board. During the next fourteen years he wrote, produced or directed (often all three) twenty- eight documentary fbs, winning several awards and an Oscar nomination. In 1958 he became head of the television drama script department at the CBC and wrote many television plays for that and other networks. He continued to produce occasional books (and revisions of earlier works) for children, and some of these later writings are reviewed elsewhere in this issue of CCL. Ironically, in view of this enormous output, McFarlane is probably best known now as the original Franklin W.

  • John Frankenheimer: Shooting Against the Wall
John Frankenheimer: shooting Against the Wall By Gerald Pratley Spring 1994 Issue of KINEMA ON JUNE 26 last year all the clocks at the Tennessee State Prison in Nashville stopped at 9 o’clock. The iron doors clanged shut, the last of the prisoners filed out to be transferred to other prisons, and adeep silence settled over the long corridors and empty cell blocks once teeming with a thousand inmates. Today the clocks still say 9 o’clock, but the doors are open again and the place alive with the familiar sights and sounds of a film crew on location. And director John Frankenheimer is at last in a prison! When Frankenheimer made Birdman of Alcatraz thirty-two years ago he planned at first to shoot it there, but permission was refused and he had to settle for studio sets. This gave the film a ”too clean look” he admits, but it was justified in part as the story was self-contained, like a poem, about one man aloneinhis cell devoted to the study of birds. It was not about daily life of men in prison. But his latest film, Against the Wall, shooting in this immense and impressive Victorian-era castle-like building soon to be torn down, is about prison life gone mad due to appalling living conditions. Ten years after Birdman the Attica New York State prison exploded in January 1971 with rage and riots, death and destruction. The response by Governor Rockefeller and the state troopers who clumsily and brutally put down the uprising left many questions unanswered.
