What a day we had! I know there were some train issues for some who then hiked mountains and flagged down replacement buses, thumbed lifts and hired bikes – just to be there with us, thank you! People came from as far as the Isle of Bute, to Lands’ End and everywhere in between. The first panel was hilarious, Glyn Baker told some wonderful stories of his father and his own career; Jonathan Kydd was as enter- taining as ever about his dad, dear Sam, and having Sydney Tafler’s son Jonathan Tafler joining us was the ic- ing on the cake. He certainly has his dear father’s voice! An immensely proud moment for them and us and seeing them on the stage with the shots of their fathers above them was quite emotional... Both of the interviewers Robert Ross and Sean Hannam kept the questions coming. Lovely Lola set us up for the day with a beautiful number in her unique glamourous style and there was much toe-tapping and rapturous applause. Brian Murphy and his dear wife Linda Regan then did a wonderful job of opening the show, we couldn’t do it without them! A short film, The Telephone at Work taught us the perils of excessive use of telephones in the 60s/early 70s and how to commu- nicate, (that was an eye opener for the younger members of the audience!) – then gorgeous Marty Wilde MBE came on stage, sang his new song about dear Eddie (I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house) and along with excellent questions by lovely John Hannam had us chuckling along for the whole interview. We were then joined by gorgeous Anne Aubrey – the first ac- tress in leather trousers! She certainly opened our eyes to work- ing with Anthony Newley. Interviewed by the charming Chris Roberts from Movie Memories, she regaled us with wonderful stories of being on set working on The Hellions and many other secret stories we cant mention... as they were for ‘our ears’ only! 4 Then Jesus arrived – Robert Powell himself, interviewed by the delightful Jenny Hanley, told us anecdotes from Jesus of Nazareth, Hannay, The 39 Steps, The Detectives and so much more. He rarely makes public appearances so to be able to invite the audience to meet him and have their treasured photographs signed for no fee really made the day. The final guest was pop icon Craig Douglas who retired over 20 years ago from public appearances. It was truly remarkable to have him with us and for the audience to sing along with him. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who saw the sparkle in his eye when he received a standing ovation – I do hope we can see more of him in the future. Then it was time for popcorn and the final film of the day – a once lost Just William film which opened with vintage cinema adverts and the ABC Minors Tune among others. There were bargains to be had on every stall in the foyer and ice creams to be purchased from young Archie with his Ar- chie’s Ices tray in the aisles. What really made it for us was meeting so many of you and hearing about your love for Talking Pictures TV. It was nerve racking for dear Noel and all of us to also take a short question and answer session on the stage, but when you work in a little office filled with film cans and just each other in it, it is very humbling to meet the people that love what you do so much. So thank you! Thank you also to our host with the most Robert Ross who took on the role of MC with great gusto!

10 Spotlight on Orson Welles 6th May 1915 – 10th October 1985 The Immortal Orson Welles, a new documentary film by Chris Wade, will premiere on Talking Pictures TV on Sun- day 5 May at 12:55pm and again on Monday 6th May, at 16:30pm to celebrate his birthday, 6th May, 1915. Orson Welles was more than a prodigious actor. He was a brilliant director and screenwriter, presenter and host. George Orson Welles was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin on 6 May 1915. His mother was a concert pianist and suffragette, while his father was a part time inventor from a wealthy fam- ily. He made his acting debut, aged 3, in 1918 at the Chicago Opera, in a production of Samson and Delilah. Aged 10 h, di- rected and acted in his own adaption of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and appeared in Dickens’ Scrooge at the Washington Grade School. The Madison Journal in 1925 referred to his activities as “cartoonist, actor, poet and only 10!” An 8 minute short entitled The Heart of Age (1934) first revealed what Welles could achieve on film; although some say a 1933 short of preceded this. He spent much of the thirties on stage and working in radio, including his famous War of the Worlds broadcast in 1938, which many believed to be true. Finally, in 1939 he arrived in Hollywood. Under contract with RKO he made his first masterpiece. Citizen Kane (1941) co-starred Joseph Cotten, Agnes Moorehead and Ruth Warrick and took the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay among its many nominations and acclaims. A month prior however, Welles had appeared in J Edgar Hoover’s memorandum with possible communist links. Welles’ next film, The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) which he directed and acted in voice only as the narrator, was followed with acting credits in Journey into Fear (1943) and Jane Eyre (1943). He married Rita Hayworth in 1943. They divorced four years later. In The Stranger (1946), Welles again directed alongside his role of Professor Rankin and in 1948 his film version of Macbeth was released in the States. His scored a giant success with The Third Man (1949) and his status became legendary. Among other film credits that achieved notability are, Othello (1951), Three Cases of Murder (1955), Confidential Report (1955), Moby Dick (1956), Touch of Evil (1958), Com- pulsion (1959) and The VIPs (1963). Many of his films failed at the box office during their initial release, yet are now hailed as true classics. As the sixties expanded into the seventies, so did his phys- ical stature. Welles had a voracious appetite – it is alleged he once ate 18 hot dogs at one visit to a street vendor. This life- style not only added to his height of 6ft 1.5in, but is also the image many remember. He exploited this in many appearanc- es including TV shows such as I Love Lucy, the sixties comedy Casino Royale (1967) and The Muppet Movie (1979). By the 80s he had received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute and the D W Griffith Award from the Directors Guild of America. Sadly, on 10 October 1985, he died of a heart attack aged 70, leaving his partner, the Croatian actress and screenwriter Oja Kodar, his 3 children and a wealth of cinematic genius behind. 11 BOOK OFFER – RECOMMENDED READS FOR THIS MONTH! 18 Spotlight on the Directors: Basil Dearden 1 January 1911 – 23 March 1971 Basil Dearden was born Basil Dear in Westcliff-on-Sea, on 1 January 1911. He left school early to work as an office boy in Lon- don but soon, experience in amateur dramatics led to work with the Ben Greet Company and an appointment as assistant stage man- ager at the Grand Theatre, Fulham. By 1931 he was general stage manager for the impresario . By the mid-30s, Dearden had moved to film, working at the of Associated Talking Pictures - as Head of Production. At this time, Dear changed his surname to Dearden. Dearden was associate producer on three George films and co-directed three films with . He made his solo direc- torial debut with (1943), which celebrates the Auxiliary Fire Service during . The art director on the film was , whom he would form a fruitful creative partnership with, to last for nearly thirty years. By the end of the war, they had completed (1944) and (1944) and were preparing Ealing’s first post-war feature, (1946). Their first social problem film, Frieda (1947), explores issues of prejudice and reconciliation after the war, as a young German woman marries into an English community. Less obvious outsiders or ene- mies were explored for (1949), I Believe in You (1952), and (1958), which all deal with problems associated with youth, criminality and delinquency. In a similar fashion, Sapphire (1959) confronts racism in Britain, while Victim (1961), made in the wake of the Wolfenden Report, focuses on the persecution of homosexuals. These six feature films constitute the core of Dearden’s explicit and self-conscious engagement with the social problem film. Also deserving serious consideration are The Gentle Gunman (1952), dealing with Irish national- ism, Life for Ruth (1962), which explores the conflict between modern medicine and religious belief, The Mindbenders (1963), with themes of brainwashing and scientific responsibility; and the youth drama, (1963). Outside this area, Dearden and Relph’s films include tragic thrillers, comedies and the costume drama (1948), Ealing’s first Technicolor film. (1950), Pool of London (1951), (1953) and The Rainbow Jacket (1954) all deal with damaged, insecure characters. They also focus on themes of masculine adjustment - in particular, how the experience and memories of wartime action resonate within the postwar present. The League of Gentlemen (1960), made after Dearden and Relph left Ealing, is more light-hearted in its treatment of a group of disillusioned ex-servicemen who reunite for robbery, but the contrast between the excitement of war and the dull disillusions of peace still dominate. Dearden returned to comedy to direct Benny Hill in Who Done It? (1956), much less memorable than his first independent feature, The Smallest Show on Earth (1957), He also acted as producer on three comedies directed by Michael Relph: Davy (1957), Rockets Galore (1958) and Desert Mice (1959). His 1962 film All Night Long was a re-working of Othello with some giants of the jazz industry, side by side with Britain’s best in the film world. From the mid-60s, Dearden and Relph worked on several international productions: (1964), Masquerade (1965), Khartoum (1966), all for United Artists, Only When I Larf (1968) for Columbia, and (1969) for Paramount. The Man Who Haunted Him- self (1970), Dearden’s final film, was a tragic melodrama, the story of a quiet family man (played by ) who dies in a car crash, only to unleash his charismatic alter ego. By a bizarre coincidence, Dearden himself died as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident on the M4, while returning home from Pinewood Studios on 23 March 1971. He was 60 years old. 19 RENOWN DVD SPECIAL OFFER!
