Forcing Bulbs to Bloom in Winter A wonderful way to bring a bit of spring into your home In the dead of winter, spring blooming bulbs are especially welcome in the house. They fill any room with lively color (and maybe scent) and remind us that spring is just around the corner. Narcissus Forcing Narcissus in Water: • Place bulbs in a shallow bowl filled with gravel; mound gravel around sides of bulbs. • Add water so it barely touches bulbs. • Place bowl in a cool, dark location. • When roots start to grow, keep water below bulbs. • When top growth grows, move bowl to bright light but out of direct sunlight. • Bulbs bloom in about 6 weeks. Narcissus also grow well in vases with just water. Bulbs should be firm, without soft spots or scars. Bulbs with two "noses", or tips, will produce two stems. Forcing Narcissus in Soil: • Choose a wide pot about 6” deep with drainage holes in the bottom. Fill the pot loosely with potting mix. Set bulbs side by side, close but not touching, pointed end up, so that the tips are even with the pot rim. Do not press the bulbs into the mix. It should be loose to allow the roots to grow through it easily. Cover with additional potting mix, so the noses are barely covered. • Water thoroughly and empty drainage tray. • Daffodils need a cold treatment for 8-10 weeks. If you pre-chilled bulbs, you can skip this step. Move pot to a dark, cool (40-45°F) location such as a basement, unheated garage or refrigerator. -

Feshbach [email protected] Welcome Letter Kiddushin is the Hebrew word for “marriage.” It comes from the same root as kodesh, which means “holy.” Both words contain within them the implication of “sacred” as “set aside, unique, unlike anything else.” The bond we form with a life-partner is meant to be just that –the most sacred, the most special, the most exclusive and unique relationship in our lives. There were three essential ingredients in the ancient Jewish wedding ceremony: the giving and acceptance of an object of value, the signing and reading of a marriage document, and the consummation of the marriage. In Biblical times, it is said, any of these three items were enough to form a marriage; by the time of the Talmud all of them were seen as required. And the customs surrounding Jewish wedding ceremonies have continued to grow and evolve ever since that time. This packet is for you. It is meant to obtain basic information that we, the clergy, need to work with you; to give you practical guidance regarding what you will need for the ceremony; and to begin to introduce you to the rich customs and traditions associated with Jewish weddings. Th ere are blessings to recite before eating and drinking, performing religious commandments, witnessing rainbows, oceans, thunder or lightning, seeing old friends, tasting new fruits and arriving at a new season. And yet many of the most important moments in the lives of transgender, intersex and gender queer Jews are not honored within our tradition. I wrote this blessing for a friend who wanted to mark each time that he received Testosterone (hormone therapy), but it could be used for any moment in transitioning such as name or pro- noun changes, coming out to loved ones or moments of medical transition. Jewish sacred texts such as the Mishna, the Talmud, midrash and classical legal codes acknowledge the diversity of gender identities in our communities, despite the way that mainstream Jewish religious tra- dition has eff aced the experiences of transgender, intersex and gender queer Jews. Th is blessing signals the holiness present in the moments of transitioning that transform Jewish lives and affi rms the place of these moments within Jewish sacred tradition. -

Tisch and Kaballat Panim When you arrive, you are invited to join the Chattan (groom) and Kallah (bride) at their respective pre- wedding gatherings. The Kallah’s gathering is called the Kaballat Panim (Hebrew for “Welcoming the Faces”) where she looks forward to greeting you and welcoming you to the wedding. At the Chatan’s Tisch (Yiddish for “table”), the Chattan may choose to share words of Torah on his wedding day. To enhance the festive atmosphere guests are encouraged to sing festive songs and toast to the Chattan and Kallah. During this time, several religious marital documents are reviewed and signed. The Tena’im (“conditions” document) comes from a medieval tradition to bind families together before a marriage. It is the official announcement of the engagement, starting off a series of steps leading into marriage. Following the signing and reading of the Tena’im document, members of the Chattan and Kallah’s families ceremonially break a plate. As with many traditions today, this can have several meanings, ranging from the remembrance of the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem to an acknowledgement of the bride and groom leaving their parents’ homes and needing new plates. Following the Tena’im, the Ketubah (“marriage contract”) is reviewed. The Ketubah is the traditional agreement that has been integral to Jewish marriages for thousands of years. It outlines the bride and groom’s emotional, spiritual, and material obligations to each other in their married life together as they build their Jewish home. Both the Tena’im and the Ketubah are witnessed by dear friends of the Chattan, Kallah and their families.
