7th Grade (Kita Zayin) Curriculum Updated: July 24, 2014 7th Grade (Kita Zayin) Curriculum Rabbi Marcelo Kormis 30 Sessions Notes to Parents: This curriculum contains the knowledge, skills and attitude Jewish students are expected to learn. It provides the learning objectives that students are expected to meet; the units and lessons that teachers teach; the books, materials, technology and readings used in a course; and the assessments methods used to evaluate student learning. Some units have a large amount of material that on a given year may be modified in consideration of the Jewish calendar, lost school days due to weather (snow days), and give greater flexibility to the teacher to accommodate students’ pre-existing level of knowledge and skills. Page 1 of 16 7th Grade (Kita Zayin) Curriculum Updated: July 24, 2014 Part 1 Musaguim – A Vocabulary of Jewish Life 22 Sessions The 7th grade curriculum will focus on basic musaguim of Jewish life. These musaguim cover the different aspects and levels of Jewish life. They can be divided into 4 concentric circles: inner circle – the day of a Jew, middle circle – the week of a Jew, middle outer circle – the year of a Jew, outer circle – the life of a Jew. The purpose of this course is to teach students about the different components of a Jewish day, the centrality of the Shabbat, the holidays and the stages of the life cycle. Focus will be placed on the Jewish traditions, rituals, ceremonies, and celebrations of each concept. Feshbach [email protected] Welcome Letter Kiddushin is the Hebrew word for “marriage.” It comes from the same root as kodesh, which means “holy.” Both words contain within them the implication of “sacred” as “set aside, unique, unlike anything else.” The bond we form with a life-partner is meant to be just that –the most sacred, the most special, the most exclusive and unique relationship in our lives. There were three essential ingredients in the ancient Jewish wedding ceremony: the giving and acceptance of an object of value, the signing and reading of a marriage document, and the consummation of the marriage. In Biblical times, it is said, any of these three items were enough to form a marriage; by the time of the Talmud all of them were seen as required. And the customs surrounding Jewish wedding ceremonies have continued to grow and evolve ever since that time. This packet is for you. It is meant to obtain basic information that we, the clergy, need to work with you; to give you practical guidance regarding what you will need for the ceremony; and to begin to introduce you to the rich customs and traditions associated with Jewish weddings. These pages will also serve as a springboard for a discussion of communications and relationship issues, as well as a brief presentation of some important issues in genetic counseling about which all Jewish couples should be aware. -

Th ere are blessings to recite before eating and drinking, performing religious commandments, witnessing rainbows, oceans, thunder or lightning, seeing old friends, tasting new fruits and arriving at a new season. And yet many of the most important moments in the lives of transgender, intersex and gender queer Jews are not honored within our tradition. I wrote this blessing for a friend who wanted to mark each time that he received Testosterone (hormone therapy), but it could be used for any moment in transitioning such as name or pro- noun changes, coming out to loved ones or moments of medical transition. Jewish sacred texts such as the Mishna, the Talmud, midrash and classical legal codes acknowledge the diversity of gender identities in our communities, despite the way that mainstream Jewish religious tra- dition has eff aced the experiences of transgender, intersex and gender queer Jews. Th is blessing signals the holiness present in the moments of transitioning that transform Jewish lives and affi rms the place of these moments within Jewish sacred tradition. -

Tisch and Kaballat Panim When you arrive, you are invited to join the Chattan (groom) and Kallah (bride) at their respective pre- wedding gatherings. The Kallah’s gathering is called the Kaballat Panim (Hebrew for “Welcoming the Faces”) where she looks forward to greeting you and welcoming you to the wedding. At the Chatan’s Tisch (Yiddish for “table”), the Chattan may choose to share words of Torah on his wedding day. To enhance the festive atmosphere guests are encouraged to sing festive songs and toast to the Chattan and Kallah. During this time, several religious marital documents are reviewed and signed. The Tena’im (“conditions” document) comes from a medieval tradition to bind families together before a marriage. It is the official announcement of the engagement, starting off a series of steps leading into marriage. Following the signing and reading of the Tena’im document, members of the Chattan and Kallah’s families ceremonially break a plate. As with many traditions today, this can have several meanings, ranging from the remembrance of the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem to an acknowledgement of the bride and groom leaving their parents’ homes and needing new plates. Following the Tena’im, the Ketubah (“marriage contract”) is reviewed. The Ketubah is the traditional agreement that has been integral to Jewish marriages for thousands of years. It outlines the bride and groom’s emotional, spiritual, and material obligations to each other in their married life together as they build their Jewish home. Both the Tena’im and the Ketubah are witnessed by dear friends of the Chattan, Kallah and their families. -

Grade 5: The Jewish Life Cycle Curriculum Textbooks: The Time of Our Lives: A Teen Guide to the Jewish Life Cycle (Nina Beth Cardin) Plays taken from Class Acts (Stan J. Beiner) The purpose of this course is to teach students about the stages of the life cycle, and the Jewish traditions, rituals, ceremonies, and celebrations used to mark each stage. Students will research and document life cycle events that have taken place in their own families. Active learning via guest speakers, drama, field trips, interviews, oral presentations, and art projects will be emphasized. Unit 1: Birth—4 sessions, 45 minutes each Time of Our Lives: Chapter 2, pages 12-21 Goals and Objectives: 1. Students will explore the life cycle rituals surrounding birth and naming. 2. Students will discuss what a covenant (Brit) is. 3. Students will understand the connection between Brit and circumcision (Brit Milah). 4. Students will learn about the components of the Brit Milah ceremony. 5. Students will understand what a Simchat Bat ceremony involves. 6. Students will discuss the importance and meaning of naming in Judaism. 7. Students will explain the origin and meaning of their own names in Hebrew and English, and will be able to discuss how their names connect to their family’s past. Genesis 2:24 According to the Zohar, the central book in the Jewish mystical tradition, each soul, prior to its entry into the world, consists of male and female united into one being. When the soul descends on earth at birth the two parts separate and animate two different bodies. These individual souls spend their earthly life looking for their original mate: the other half that was separated from them prior to birth. When the time for marriage arrives, the Holy Blessed One, who knows all souls, unites them again as they were before.
